Electronic Commerce, Consumer Search and Retailing Cost Reduction

This paper explains four things in a unified way. First, how e-commerce can generate price equilibria where physical shops either compete with virtual shops for consumers with Internet access, or alternatively, sell only to consumers with no Internet access. Second, how these price equilibria might involve price dispersion on-line. Third, why prices may be higher on-line. Fourth, why established firms can, but need not, be more reluctant than newly created firm to adopt e-commerce. For this purpose we develop a model where e-commerce reduces consumers' search costs, involves trade-offs for consumers, and reduces retailing costs.Comment: 29th TPRC Conference, 200

In nowadays' informational society, both the rapid pace development of technology and Internet's heavy influence on everyday's life brought along new characteristics to the 21st century consumer. Accordingly, in this little e-s dominated world, it comes as no surprise that the booming business on the new virtual market, the Internet, triggered the appearance of a new consumer, the online consumer, by far more informed, open to progress and selective. Along with the shifts of the traditional consumer' traits, this aim of this article is to emphasize, on a theoretical basis, the rising importance of the online consumer in the 21st century, and point out its main hallmarks and consumer behavior habits. With Generation Y, not only thriving in the digital era but also prevailing as the most active online shopper, the profile of the 21 st century consumer is defined by a clearly new and enhanced perspective.informational society, Internet, online consumer's behavior, online consumer.

The Layered Virtual Reality Commerce System (LaVRCS): An Approach to Creating Viable VRCommerce Sites

    Get PDF
In this paper, the authors argue that Virtual Reality (VR) does have a place in an e-commerce environment. However, VR is not yet ready to supplant standard e-commerce Web interfaces with a completely immersive VR environment. Rather, Virtual Reality in e-commerce (VRCommerce) must rely on a mixed platform presentation to account for various levels of usability, user trust, and technical feasibility. The authors propose that e-commerce sites that want to implement VRCommerce offer at least three layers of interaction to users: a standard Web interface, embedded VR objects in a Web interface, and semi-immersive VR within an existing Web interface. This system is termed the Layered Virtual Reality Commerce System, or LaVRCS

The expectations about the growth of e-commerce are often discrepant, because it’s not easy to qualify the importance of such a fast developing phenomenon. Beside estimations in which the number of the e- trading sites is constantly growing, we witnessed the failure of many successful companies that were trading by the web (dotcom crash). According to the recent report made by the Tagliacarne Institute about the level of information technologies of Italian small and medium sized enterprises, Sicily is first due to the percentage of companies owning Internet sites and used ecommerce. Our purpose was essentially to 'record' the 'state of e-commerce” concerning some agri-food products in a certain period of time, both between Sicilian enterprises and in a wider context in which Sicilian products can be sold. We operated directly through a simulation on the web, identifying ourselves with a potential user endowed with average capabilities. This study pointed out a cautious and gradual approach by those enterprises operating in the agri-food system respect the new economy.e-commerce, agro-food products, search-engines
