Virtual Frames as Long-Term Reference Frames for HEVC Inter-Prediction
High Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC) employs both past or future frames when encoding the current frame in a video sequence. This paper proposes a framework for using virtual reference frames, to achieve increased coding gains in the long-term for repetitive scenes in static camera scenarios
Improving HEVC Coding Efficiency Using Virtual Long-Term Reference Pictures
Inter-frame prediction in HEVC uses two types of reference pictures: short-term and long-term. Out of these long-term reference (LTR) pictures enable exploiting correlation among frames with extended temporal distances. In addition, LTR pictures improve the inter-frame prediction where video scenes are repeated such as in TV-series episodes, news broad-casts and movies. In this context, this paper proposes an algorithm to calculate LTR pictures using artificially generated virtual reference frames for static-camera scenes. The experimental results demonstrate an average coding improvement of2.34%in terms of Bjøntegaard Delta Bit Rate(BDBR), when compared with the HEVC reference encoder HM16.8
Optimized Data Representation for Interactive Multiview Navigation
In contrary to traditional media streaming services where a unique media
content is delivered to different users, interactive multiview navigation
applications enable users to choose their own viewpoints and freely navigate in
a 3-D scene. The interactivity brings new challenges in addition to the
classical rate-distortion trade-off, which considers only the compression
performance and viewing quality. On the one hand, interactivity necessitates
sufficient viewpoints for richer navigation; on the other hand, it requires to
provide low bandwidth and delay costs for smooth navigation during view
transitions. In this paper, we formally describe the novel trade-offs posed by
the navigation interactivity and classical rate-distortion criterion. Based on
an original formulation, we look for the optimal design of the data
representation by introducing novel rate and distortion models and practical
solving algorithms. Experiments show that the proposed data representation
method outperforms the baseline solution by providing lower resource
consumptions and higher visual quality in all navigation configurations, which
certainly confirms the potential of the proposed data representation in
practical interactive navigation systems
Convex Optimization Based Bit Allocation for Light Field Compression under Weighting and Consistency Constraints
Compared with conventional image and video, light field images introduce the
weight channel, as well as the visual consistency of rendered view, information
that has to be taken into account when compressing the pseudo-temporal-sequence
(PTS) created from light field images. In this paper, we propose a novel frame
level bit allocation framework for PTS coding. A joint model that measures
weighted distortion and visual consistency, combined with an iterative encoding
system, yields the optimal bit allocation for each frame by solving a convex
optimization problem. Experimental results show that the proposed framework is
effective in producing desired distortion distribution based on weights, and
achieves up to 24.7% BD-rate reduction comparing to the default rate control
algorithm.Comment: published in IEEE Data Compression Conference, 201
Intra Coding Strategy for Video Error Resiliency: Behavioral Analysis
One challenge in video transmission is to deal with packet loss. Since the compressed video streams are sensitive to data loss, the error resiliency of the encoded video becomes important. When video data is lost and retransmission is not possible, the missed data should be concealed. But loss concealment causes distortion in the lossy frame which also propagates into the next frames even if their data are received correctly. One promising solution to mitigate this error propagation is intra coding. There are three approaches for intra coding: intra coding of a number of blocks selected randomly or regularly, intra coding of some specific blocks selected by an appropriate cost function, or intra coding of a whole frame. But Intra coding reduces the compression ratio; therefore, there exists a trade-off between bitrate and error resiliency achieved by intra coding. In this paper, we study and show the best strategy for getting the best rate-distortion performance. Considering the error propagation, an objective function is formulated, and with some approximations, this objective function is simplified and solved. The solution demonstrates that periodical I-frame coding is preferred over coding only a number of blocks as intra mode in P-frames. Through examination of various test sequences, it is shown that the best intra frame period depends on the coding bitrate as well as the packet loss rate. We then propose a scheme to estimate this period from curve fitting of the experimental results, and show that our proposed scheme outperforms other methods of intra coding especially for higher loss rates and coding bitrates
A two-stage approach for robust HEVC coding and streaming
The increased compression ratios achieved by the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard lead to reduced
robustness of coded streams, with increased susceptibility to
network errors and consequent video quality degradation. This
paper proposes a method based on a two-stage approach to
improve the error robustness of HEVC streaming, by reducing
temporal error propagation in case of frame loss. The prediction mismatch that occurs at the decoder after frame loss is reduced through the following two stages: (i) at the encoding stage, the reference pictures are dynamically selected based on constraining conditions and Lagrangian optimisation, which distributes the use of reference pictures, by reducing the number of prediction units (PUs) that depend on a single reference; (ii) at the streaming stage, a motion vector (MV) prioritisation algorithm, based on spatial dependencies, selects an optimal sub-set of MVs to be transmitted, redundantly, as side information to reduce mismatched MV predictions at the decoder. The simulation results show that the proposed method significantly reduces the effect of temporal error propagation. Compared to the reference HEVC, the proposed reference picture selection method is able to improve the video quality at low packet loss rates (e.g., 1%) using
the same bitrate, achieving quality gains up to 2.3 dB for 10%
of packet loss ratio. It is shown, for instance, that the redundant MVs are able to boost the performance achieving quality gains of 3 dB when compared to the reference HEVC, at the cost using 4% increase in total bitrate

In Interactive Multi-View Video (IMVV), the video has been captured by numbers of
cameras positioned in array and transmitted those camera views to users. The user can
interact with the transmitted video content by choosing viewpoints (views from different
cameras in the array) with the expectation of minimum transmission delay while
changing among various views. View switching delay is one of the primary concern that
is dealt in this thesis work, where the contribution is to minimize the transmission delay
of new view switch frame through a novel process of selection of the predicted view
and compression considering the transmission efficiency. Mainly considered a realtime
IMVV streaming, and the view switch is mapped as discrete Markov chain, where
the transition probability is derived using Zipf distribution, which provides information
regarding view switch prediction. To eliminate Round-Trip Time (RTT) transmission
delay, Quantization Parameters (QP) are adaptively allocated to the remaining redundant
transmitted frames to maintain view switching time minimum, trading off with
the quality of the video till RTT time-span. The experimental results of the proposed
method show superior performance on PSNR and view switching delay for better viewing quality over the existing methods
