    Learning About ODEs Using Interactive Online Modules

    This paper discusses the development and implementation of a set of online teaching and learning modules for the modeling and solution of simple linear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). The paper describes how constructivist principles are used in the development of these modules and how in-built assessment has been used to enhance student learning. A discussion of the module structure is provided with particular emphasis on the concept of the module walk-through. Modules developed for the classical ODE problems of the simple pendulum and the mass on a spring are used to illustrate these module constructs. The paper concludes with a discussion of the effectiveness of these modules using data sourced from student questionnaires, focus groups and lab session evaluations

    An assessment of learning gains from educational animated videos versus traditional extension presentations among farmers in Benin*

    Article purchasedThis study compared the efficacy of linguistically and dialectically localized animated educational videos (LAV) against traditional learning extension (TLE) presentations for learning gains of knowledge around agricultural- and healthcare-related topics within a rural population in Benin. While both approaches demonstrated learning gains, LAV resulted in significantly higher test scores and more detailed knowledge retention. A key contribution of this research, moreover, involves the use of mobile phone technologies to further disseminate educational information. That is, a majority of participants expressed both a preference for the LAV teaching approach and a heightened interest in digitally sharing the information from the educational animations with others. Because the animations are, by design, readily accessible to mobile phones via Africa’s explosively expanding digital infrastructure, this heightened interest in sharing the animated videos also transforms each study participant into a potential a learning node and point of dissemination for the educational video’s material as well

    Layered 3D: tomographic image synthesis for attenuation-based light field and high dynamic range displays

    We develop tomographic techniques for image synthesis on displays composed of compact volumes of light-attenuating material. Such volumetric attenuators recreate a 4D light field or high-contrast 2D image when illuminated by a uniform backlight. Since arbitrary oblique views may be inconsistent with any single attenuator, iterative tomographic reconstruction minimizes the difference between the emitted and target light fields, subject to physical constraints on attenuation. As multi-layer generalizations of conventional parallax barriers, such displays are shown, both by theory and experiment, to exceed the performance of existing dual-layer architectures. For 3D display, spatial resolution, depth of field, and brightness are increased, compared to parallax barriers. For a plane at a fixed depth, our optimization also allows optimal construction of high dynamic range displays, confirming existing heuristics and providing the first extension to multiple, disjoint layers. We conclude by demonstrating the benefits and limitations of attenuation-based light field displays using an inexpensive fabrication method: separating multiple printed transparencies with acrylic sheets.Dolby Laboratories Inc.Samsung ElectronicsAlfred P.
