Mediated data integration and transformation for web service-based software architectures
Service-oriented architecture using XML-based web services has been widely accepted by many organisations as the standard infrastructure to integrate heterogeneous and autonomous data sources. As a result, many Web service providers are built up on top of the data sources to share the data by supporting provided and required interfaces and methods of data access in a unified manner. In the context of data integration, problems arise when Web services are assembled to deliver an integrated view of data, adaptable to the specific needs of individual clients and providers. Traditional approaches of data integration and transformation are not suitable to automate the construction of connectors dedicated to connect selected Web services to render integrated and tailored views of data. We propose a declarative approach that addresses the oftenneglected data integration and adaptivity aspects of serviceoriented

VIGAN: Missing View Imputation with Generative Adversarial Networks
In an era when big data are becoming the norm, there is less concern with the
quantity but more with the quality and completeness of the data. In many
disciplines, data are collected from heterogeneous sources, resulting in
multi-view or multi-modal datasets. The missing data problem has been
challenging to address in multi-view data analysis. Especially, when certain
samples miss an entire view of data, it creates the missing view problem.
Classic multiple imputations or matrix completion methods are hardly effective
here when no information can be based on in the specific view to impute data
for such samples. The commonly-used simple method of removing samples with a
missing view can dramatically reduce sample size, thus diminishing the
statistical power of a subsequent analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel
approach for view imputation via generative adversarial networks (GANs), which
we name by VIGAN. This approach first treats each view as a separate domain and
identifies domain-to-domain mappings via a GAN using randomly-sampled data from
each view, and then employs a multi-modal denoising autoencoder (DAE) to
reconstruct the missing view from the GAN outputs based on paired data across
the views. Then, by optimizing the GAN and DAE jointly, our model enables the
knowledge integration for domain mappings and view correspondences to
effectively recover the missing view. Empirical results on benchmark datasets
validate the VIGAN approach by comparing against the state of the art. The
evaluation of VIGAN in a genetic study of substance use disorders further

Geospatial data integration with Semantic Web services: the eMerges approach
Geographic space still lacks the semantics allowing a unified view of spatial data. Indeed, as a unique but all encompassing domain, it presents specificities that geospatial applications are still unable to handle. Moreover, to be useful, new spatial applications need to match human cognitive abilities of spatial representation and reasoning. In this context, eMerges, an approach to geospatial data integration based on Semantic Web Services (SWS), allows the unified representation and manipulation of heterogeneous spatial data sources. eMerges provides this integration by mediating legacy spatial data sources to high-level spatial ontologies through SWS and by presenting for each object context dependent affordances. This generic approach is applied here in the context of an emergency management use case developed in collaboration with emergency planners of public agencies
ISPIDER Central: an integrated database web-server for proteomics
Despite the growing volumes of proteomic data, integration of the underlying results remains problematic owing to differences in formats, data captured, protein accessions and services available from the individual repositories. To address this, we present the ISPIDER Central Proteomic Database search (http://www.ispider.manchester.ac.uk/cgi-bin/ProteomicSearch.pl), an integration service offering novel search capabilities over leading, mature, proteomic repositories including PRoteomics IDEntifications database (PRIDE), PepSeeker, PeptideAtlas and the Global Proteome Machine. It enables users to search for proteins and peptides that have been characterised in mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments from different groups, stored in different databases, and view the collated results with specialist viewers/clients. In order to overcome limitations imposed by the great variability in protein accessions used by individual laboratories, the European Bioinformatics Institute's Protein Identifier Cross-Reference (PICR) service is used to resolve accessions from different sequence repositories. Custom-built clients allow users to view peptide/protein identifications in different contexts from multiple experiments and repositories, as well as integration with the Dasty2 client supporting any annotations available from Distributed Annotation System servers. Further information on the protein hits may also be added via external web services able to take a protein as input. This web server offers the first truly integrated access to proteomics repositories and provides a unique service to biologists interested in mass spectrometry-based proteomics
Manufacturing and services in Italian labour market areas in an historical perspective (1981-1996)
The basic hypothesis of this paper is the existence of strong territorial disparities in services development. In many areas a strict integration emerges between manufacturing production and endowment of tertiary functions; in other regions the sparse presence of services may result in belated development or slow growth. From a sectoral point of view, the analysis goes beyond the classical tripartition of industries, proposing a classification of services based both on the nature of the service given and the features of their users. From a geographical point of view, a territorial grid based on local labour market areas as proposed by Istat [1997] is adopted. The long-term analysis - based on Census data from 1981 to 1996 - allows to identify territorial regularities in development patterns across LLMAs, with respect to manufacturing and services and to different growth paths (convergence, externalisation, integration, ...).

Object-oriented views: a novel approach for tool integration in design environments (dissertation)
Object-oriented databases have been proposed to serve as the data management component of integrated design environments. One central database represents a bottleneck, however, requiring all design tools to work on the same information model and preventing the extensibility of the system over time. In this dissertation, I propose a view-based object server that successfully addresses these problems by supporting design views tailored to the needs of individual design tools.A view on an object-oriented schema corresponds to a virtual subschema graph with restructured generalization and property decomposition hierarchies. I present a methodology for supporting multiple view schemata, called MutliView. MultiView is anchored on the following four ideas: (1) the customization of individual classes using object algebra, (2) the integration of these derived classes into one global schema graoh, (3) the extraction of virtual and base classes from the global schema as required by the view, and (4) the generation of a class hierarchy for these selected view classes. MutliView's division of view specification into these well-defined tasks, some of which have been successfully automated, makes it a powerful tool for supporting the specification of views by non-database experts while enforcing view consistency.In this dissertation, I describe solutions for all four tasks underlying MultiView. For the first task, I have formulated class derivatin operators modeled after the well-known relational algebra operators. For the second task, I have developed a classification algorithm that automatically integrates derived classes into one global schema. For the third task, I have designed a view definition language that can be used to declaratively specify the view classes required for a particular view. For the last task, I have developed an algorithm that generates a complete, minimal and consistent view schema. I present proofs of correctness, complexity analysis, and numerous illustrative examples for all algorithms.MultiView is applied to address the tool integration problem in a behavioral synthesis system. For this purpose, I first develop a unified design object model for behavioral synthesis. I then formulate customized design views of this model tailored to the needs of particular design tools. The resulting system allows the design tools to work on their view of the information model, while MultiView assures the consistent integration of the diverse design data into one object model
Benchmarking and viability assessment of optical packet switching for metro networks
Optical packet switching (OPS) has been proposed as a strong candidate for future metro networks. This paper assesses the viability of an OPS-based ring architecture as proposed within the research project DAVID (Data And Voice Integration on DWDM), funded by the European Commission through the Information Society Technologies (IST) framework. Its feasibility is discussed from a physical-layer point of view, and its limitations in size are explored. Through dimensioning studies, we show that the proposed OPS architecture is competitive with respect to alternative metropolitan area network (MAN) approaches, including synchronous digital hierarchy, resilient packet rings (RPR), and star-based Ethernet. Finally, the proposed OPS architectures are discussed from a logical performance point of view, and a high-quality scheduling algorithm to control the packet-switching operations in the rings is explained
