Exoplanet Research with the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)
When the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) was
conceived and its first science cases defined, exoplanets had not been
detected. Later studies, however, showed that optical and near-infrared
photometric and spectrophotometric follow-up observations during planetary
transits and eclipses are feasible with SOFIA's instrumentation, in particular
with the HIPO-FLITECAM and FPI+ optical and near infrared (NIR) instruments.
Additionally, the airborne-based platform SOFIA has a number of unique
advantages when compared to other ground- and space-based observatories in this
field of research. Here we will outline these theoretical advantages, present
some sample science cases and the results of two observations from SOFIA's
first five observation cycles -- an observation of the Hot Jupiter HD 189733b
with HIPO and an observation of the Super-Earth GJ 1214b with FLIPO and FPI+.
Based on these early products available to this science case, we evaluate
SOFIA's potential and future perspectives in the field of optical and infrared
exoplanet spectrophotometry in the stratosphere.Comment: Invited review chapter, accepted for publication in "Handbook of

weSPOT: A personal and social approach to inquiry-based learning
weSPOT is a new European initiative proposing a novel approach for personal and social inquiry-based learning in secondary and higher education. weSPOT aims at enabling students to create their mash-ups out of cloud based tools and services in order to perform scientific investigations. Students will also be able to share their inquiry accomplishments in social networks and receive feedback from the learning environment and their peers. This paper presents the research framework of the weSPOT project, as well as the initial inquiry-based learning scenarios that will be piloted by the project in real-life educational settings

Integrity static analysis of COTS/SOUP
This paper describes the integrity static analysis approach developed to support the justification of commercial off-the-shelf software (COTS) used in a safety-related system. The static analysis was part of an overall software qualification programme, which also included the work reported in our paper presented at Safecomp 2002. Integrity static analysis focuses on unsafe language constructs and âcovertâ flows, where one thread can affect the data or control flow of another thread. The analysis addressed two main aspects: the internal integrity of the code (especially for the more critical functions), and the intra-component integrity, checking for covert channels. The analysis process was supported by an aggregation of tools, combined and engineered to support the checks done and to scale as necessary. Integrity static analysis is feasible for industrial scale software, did not require unreasonable resources and we provide data that illustrates its contribution to the software qualification programme
A Type-coherent, Expressive Representation as an Initial Step to Language Understanding
A growing interest in tasks involving language understanding by the NLP
community has led to the need for effective semantic parsing and inference.
Modern NLP systems use semantic representations that do not quite fulfill the
nuanced needs for language understanding: adequately modeling language
semantics, enabling general inferences, and being accurately recoverable. This
document describes underspecified logical forms (ULF) for Episodic Logic (EL),
which is an initial form for a semantic representation that balances these
needs. ULFs fully resolve the semantic type structure while leaving issues such
as quantifier scope, word sense, and anaphora unresolved; they provide a
starting point for further resolution into EL, and enable certain structural
inferences without further resolution. This document also presents preliminary
results of creating a hand-annotated corpus of ULFs for the purpose of training
a precise ULF parser, showing a three-person pairwise interannotator agreement
of 0.88 on confident annotations. We hypothesize that a divide-and-conquer
approach to semantic parsing starting with derivation of ULFs will lead to
semantic analyses that do justice to subtle aspects of linguistic meaning, and
will enable construction of more accurate semantic parsers.Comment: Accepted for publication at The 13th International Conference on
