And yet archiving and exhibiting the presence of the past remains a key cultural, political and economic activity in many urban environments. This book takes the example of Berlin over the past four decades to chart how the memory culture of the city has responded to the challenges and transformations thrown up by the changing political, social and economic organization of the built environment. The book focuses on the visual culture of the city (architecture, memorials, photography and film). It argues that the recovery of the experience of time is central to the practices of an emergent memory culture in a contemporary 'overexposed' city, whose spatial and temporal boundaries have long since disintegrated

    Urban Digital Twins for Smart Cities and Citizens:The Case Study of Herrenberg, Germany

    Cities are complex systems connected to economic, ecological, and demographic conditions and change. They are also characterized by diverging perceptions and interests of citizens and stakeholders. Thus, in the arena of urban planning, we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with urban complexity but also allow for participatory and collaborative processes to empower citizens. This to create democratic cities. Connected to the field of smart cities and citizens, we present in this paper, the prototype of an urban digital twin for the 30,000-people town of Herrenberg in Germany. Urban digital twins are sophisticated data models allowing for collaborative processes. The herein presented prototype comprises (1) a 3D model of the built environment, (2) a street network model using the theory and method of space syntax, (3) an urban mobility simulation, (4) a wind flow simulation, and (5) a number of empirical quantitative and qualitative data using volunteered geographic information (VGI). In addition, the urban digital twin was implemented in a visualization platform for virtual reality and was presented to the general public during diverse public participatory processes, as well as in the framework of the "Morgenstadt Werkstatt" (Tomorrow's Cities Workshop). The results of a survey indicated that this method and technology could significantly aid in participatory and collaborative processes. Further understanding of how urban digital twins support urban planners, urban designers, and the general public as a collaboration and communication tool and for decision support allows us to be more intentional when creating smart cities and sustainable cities with the help of digital twins. We conclude the paper with a discussion of the presented results and further research directions

    Lighting Balloon Suitability Analysis: Singapore Grand Prix Case Study

    Lighting balloons are increasingly being used to light up night activities, while providing a better aesthetic environment. Partex International in Singapore is the sole distributor of one such lighting balloon brand, called Airstar. Airstar lighting balloons have been used extensively for night related activities like events, construction work, rescue and movie sets. Partex was contracted to light up the circuit park of the Singapore Grand Prix F1 racing event with the Airstar lighting balloons. Due to the extent of coverage and lack of site information, Partex faced difficulty in finding the best positions to place their lighting balloons for optimum coverage. Hence, this project focused on creating GIS analyses tool that provide better placement solution for Partex. The two analyses covered in this project included: (1) a tool to find lighting priority zones based on Partex’s requirements; and (2) a tool that calculates total lighting coverage based on lux values of lighting balloons input by user. The end-product of the project included a web application with compiled tools and maps created by the project team for Partex’s easy access

    An AI-based framework for studying visual diversity of urban neighborhoods and its relationship with socio-demographic variables

    This study presents a framework to study quantitatively geographical visual diversities of urban neighborhood from a large collection of street-view images using an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based image segmentation technique. A variety of diversity indices are computed from the extracted visual semantics. They are utilized to discover the relationships between urban visual appearance and socio-demographic variables. This study also validates the reliability of the method with human evaluators. The methodology and results obtained from this study can potentially be used to study urban features, locate houses, establish services, and better operate municipalities
