Reality Tooning: Fast Non-Photorealism for Augmented Video Streams (poster

    Get PDF
Recently, we have proposed a novel approach to generating augmented video streams. The output images are a non-photorealistic reproduction of the augmented environment. Special stylization methods are applied to both the background camera image and the virtual objects. This way, the graphical foreground and the real background images are rendered in a similar style, so that they are less distinguishable from each other. Here, we present a new algorithm for the cartoon-like stylization of augmented reality images, which uses a novel post-processing filter for cartoon-like color segmentation and high-contrast silhouettes. In order to make a fast post-processing of rendered images possible, the programmability of modern graphics hardware is exploited. The system is capable of generatin

Measuring the Discernability of Virtual Objects in Conventional and Stylized Augmented Reality

In augmented reality, virtual graphical objects are overlaid over the real environment of the observer. Conventional augmented reality systems normally use standard real-time rendering methods for generating the graphical representations of virtual objects. These renderings contain the typical artifacts of computer generated graphics, e.g., aliasing caused by the rasterization process and unrealistic, manually configured illumination models. Due to these artifacts, virtual objects look artifical and can easily be distinguished from the real environment. A different approach to generating augmented reality images is the basis of stylized augmented reality [FBS05c]. Here, similar types of artistic or illustrative stylization are applied to the virtual objects and the camera image of the real enviroment. Therefore, real and virtual image elements look significantly more similar and are less distinguishable from each other. In this paper, we present the results of a psychophysical study on the effectiveness of stylized augmented reality. In this study, a number of participants were asked to decide whether objects shown in images of augmented reality scenes are virtual or real. Conventionally rendered as well as stylized augmented reality images and short video clips were presented to the participants. The correctness of the participants' responses and their reaction times were recorded. The results of our study show that an equalized level of realism is achieved by using stylized augmented reality, i.e., that it is significantly more difficult to distinguish virtual objects from real objects

Types of Digital Visuals in E-Learning

    Get PDF
This session explores the various types of digital visuals used in e-learning, with examples covering one-dimensional to four-dimensional imagery. Examples will demonstrate how the addition of live data, time elements, image overlays, digital-enabled effects, and interactivity add value to electronic learning. Samples from live courses and sites will be shown. There will be a discussion of how the various types of images can be developed

A survey on vehicular communication for cooperative truck platooning application

    Get PDF
Platooning is an application where a group of vehicles move one after each other in close proximity, acting jointly as a single physical system. The scope of platooning is to improve safety, reduce fuel consumption, and increase road use efficiency. Even if conceived several decades ago as a concept, based on the new progress in automation and vehicular networking platooning has attracted particular attention in the latest years and is expected to become of common implementation in the next future, at least for trucks. The platoon system is the result of a combination of multiple disciplines, from transportation, to automation, to electronics, to telecommunications. In this survey, we consider the platooning, and more specifically the platooning of trucks, from the point of view of wireless communications. Wireless communications are indeed a key element, since they allow the information to propagate within the convoy with an almost negligible delay and really making all vehicles acting as one. Scope of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey on connected vehicles for the platooning application, starting with an overview of the projects that are driving the development of this technology, followed by a brief overview of the current and upcoming vehicular networking architecture and standards, by a review of the main open issues related to wireless communications applied to platooning, and a discussion of security threats and privacy concerns. The survey will conclude with a discussion of the main areas that we consider still open and that can drive future research directions.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc. Effect of Mixed Traffic Platooning by Commercial Vehicle Types on Traffic Flow Characteristics of Highways

The existence of different types of Commercial Vehicles (CVs) in the shared roadway affects traffic flow characteristics differently from other vehicles. Owing to the uncertain placement and movement of these CVs in both longitudinal and lateral directions, the opportunities for lane changing and overtaking by other vehicles with lower maneuverability decrease, resulting in the formation of platoons. The study's primary aim is to assess the effect of mixed traffic platoons formed by three different classes of CVs on highway traffic speed, flow, and density under two different traffic regimes (regimes A and B). In this study, regime A represents the non-platooning condition, and regime B represents the platooning condition. Bi-directional traffic data was collected from the highway sections in India using an Infra-Red sensor-based device. The critical leading time headway is determined for the different CVs (platoon leaders) based on the mean absolute relative speed of platoons. The speed-flow-density plots are established using the macroscopic fundamental diagrams for the highway sections under regimes A and B to quantify the platooning impacts of CVs on the traffic characteristics. The study findings reveal that the speed at capacity, density at capacity, and traffic capacity decreased significantly due to CVs' influence on the general traffic mix during the mixed traffic platooning conditions. However, this effect was found to be relatively higher during the Heavy Commercial Vehicle operation as a platoon leader compared to Medium Commercial Vehicle and Light Commercial Vehicle as a platoon leader
