Multimodal Content Analysis for Effective Advertisements on YouTube
The rapid advances in e-commerce and Web 2.0 technologies have greatly
increased the impact of commercial advertisements on the general public. As a
key enabling technology, a multitude of recommender systems exists which
analyzes user features and browsing patterns to recommend appealing
advertisements to users. In this work, we seek to study the characteristics or
attributes that characterize an effective advertisement and recommend a useful
set of features to aid the designing and production processes of commercial
advertisements. We analyze the temporal patterns from multimedia content of
advertisement videos including auditory, visual and textual components, and
study their individual roles and synergies in the success of an advertisement.
The objective of this work is then to measure the effectiveness of an
advertisement, and to recommend a useful set of features to advertisement
designers to make it more successful and approachable to users. Our proposed
framework employs the signal processing technique of cross modality feature
learning where data streams from different components are employed to train
separate neural network models and are then fused together to learn a shared
representation. Subsequently, a neural network model trained on this joint
feature embedding representation is utilized as a classifier to predict
advertisement effectiveness. We validate our approach using subjective ratings
from a dedicated user study, the sentiment strength of online viewer comments,
and a viewer opinion metric of the ratio of the Likes and Views received by

Who is the director of this movie? Automatic style recognition based on shot features
We show how low-level formal features, such as shot duration, meant as length
of camera takes, and shot scale, i.e. the distance between the camera and the
subject, are distinctive of a director's style in art movies. So far such
features were thought of not having enough varieties to become distinctive of
an author. However our investigation on the full filmographies of six different
authors (Scorsese, Godard, Tarr, Fellini, Antonioni, and Bergman) for a total
number of 120 movies analysed second by second, confirms that these
shot-related features do not appear as random patterns in movies from the same
director. For feature extraction we adopt methods based on both conventional
and deep learning techniques. Our findings suggest that feature sequential
patterns, i.e. how features evolve in time, are at least as important as the
related feature distributions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first
study dealing with automatic attribution of movie authorship, which opens up
interesting lines of cross-disciplinary research on the impact of style on the
aesthetic and emotional effects on the viewers
Overview of VideoCLEF 2009: New perspectives on speech-based multimedia content enrichment
VideoCLEF 2009 offered three tasks related to enriching video content for improved multimedia access in a multilingual environment. For each task, video data (Dutch-language television, predominantly documentaries) accompanied by speech recognition transcripts were provided.
The Subject Classification Task involved automatic tagging of videos with subject theme labels. The best performance was achieved by approaching subject tagging as an information retrieval task and using both speech recognition transcripts and archival metadata. Alternatively, classifiers were trained using either the training data provided or data collected from Wikipedia or via general Web search. The Affect Task involved detecting narrative peaks, defined as points where viewers perceive heightened dramatic tension. The task was carried out on the “Beeldenstorm” collection containing 45 short-form documentaries on the visual arts. The best runs exploited affective vocabulary and audience directed speech. Other approaches included using topic changes, elevated speaking pitch, increased speaking intensity and radical visual changes. The Linking Task, also called “Finding Related Resources Across Languages,” involved linking video to material on the same subject in a different language.
Participants were provided with a list of multimedia anchors (short video segments) in the Dutch-language “Beeldenstorm” collection and were expected to return target pages drawn from English-language Wikipedia. The best performing methods used the transcript of the
speech spoken during the multimedia anchor to build a query to search an index of the Dutch language Wikipedia. The Dutch Wikipedia pages returned were used to identify related English pages. Participants also experimented with pseudo-relevance feedback, query translation and methods that targeted proper names
Searching, navigating, and recommending movies through emotions: A scoping review
Movies offer viewers a broad range of emotional experiences, providing entertainment, and meaning. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we reviewed the literature on digital systems designed to help users search and browse movie libraries and offer recommendations based on emotional content. Our search yielded 83 eligible documents (published between 2000 and 2021). We identified 22 case studies, 34 empirical studies, 26 proof of concept, and one theoretical paper. User transactions (e.g., ratings, tags) were the preferred source of information. The documents examined approached emotions from both categorical (n=35) and dimensional (n=18) perspectives, and nine documents offer a combination of both approaches. Although there are several authors mentioned, the references used are frequently dated, and 12 documents do not mention the author or the model used. We identified 61 words related to emotion or affect. Documents presented on average 1.36 positive terms and 2.64 negative terms. Sentiment analysis () is frequently used for emotion identification, followed by subjective evaluations (n= 15), movie low-level audio and visual features (n = 11), and face recognition technologies (n = 8). Movies and meaning: from low-level features to mind reading
When dealing with movies, closing the tremendous discontinuity between low-level features and the richness of semantics in the viewers' cognitive processes, requires a variety of approaches and different perspectives. For instance when attempting to relate movie content to users' affective
responses, previous work suggests that a direct mapping of audio-visual properties into elicited emotions is difficult, due to the high variability of individual reactions. To reduce the gap between the objective level of features and the subjective sphere of emotions, we exploit the intermediate
representation of the connotative properties of movies: the set of shooting and editing conventions that help in transmitting meaning to the audience. One of these stylistic feature, the shot scale, i.e. the distance of the camera from the subject, effectively regulates theory of mind, indicating
that increasing spatial proximity to the character triggers higher occurrence of mental state references in viewers' story descriptions. Movies are also becoming an important stimuli employed in neural decoding, an ambitious line of research within contemporary neuroscience aiming at "mindreading".
In this field we address the challenge of producing decoding models for the reconstruction of perceptual contents by combining fMRI data and deep features in a hybrid model able to predict specific video object classes
General Purpose Textual Sentiment Analysis and Emotion Detection Tools
Textual sentiment analysis and emotion detection consists in retrieving the
sentiment or emotion carried by a text or document. This task can be useful in
many domains: opinion mining, prediction, feedbacks, etc. However, building a
general purpose tool for doing sentiment analysis and emotion detection raises
a number of issues, theoretical issues like the dependence to the domain or to
the language but also pratical issues like the emotion representation for
interoperability. In this paper we present our sentiment/emotion analysis
tools, the way we propose to circumvent the di culties and the applications

Affective Recommendation of Movies Based on Selected Connotative Features
The apparent difficulty in assessing emotions elicited by movies and the undeniable high variability in subjects emotional responses to filmic content have been recently tackled by exploring film connotative properties: the set of shooting and editing conventions that help in transmitting meaning to the audience. Connotation provides an intermediate representation which exploits the objectivity of audiovisual descriptors to predict the subjective emotional reaction of single users. This is done without the need of registering users physiological signals neither by employing other people highly variable emotional rates, but just relying on the inter-subjectivity of connotative concepts and on the knowledge of users reactions to similar stimuli. This work extends previous by extracting audiovisual and film grammar descriptors and, driven by users rates on connotative properties, creates a shared framework where movie scenes are placed, compared and recommended according to connotation. We evaluate the potential of the proposed system by asking users to assess the ability of connotation in suggesting filmic content able to target their affective requests
Sharing Video Emotional Information in the Web
Video growth over the Internet changed the way users search, browse and view video content. Watching
movies over the Internet is increasing and becoming a pastime. The possibility of streaming Internet content
to TV, advances in video compression techniques and video streaming have turned this recent modality of
watching movies easy and doable. Web portals as a worldwide mean of multimedia data access need to have
their contents properly classified in order to meet users’ needs and expectations. The authors propose a set of semantic descriptors based on both user physiological signals, captured while watching videos, and on video low-level features extraction.
