    SPATIO-TEMPORAL REGISTRATION IN AUGMENTED REALITY

    The overarching goal of Augmented Reality (AR) is to provide users with the illusion that virtual and real objects coexist indistinguishably in the same space. An effective persistent illusion requires accurate registration between the real and the virtual objects, registration that is spatially and temporally coherent. However, visible misregistration can be caused by many inherent error sources, such as errors in calibration, tracking, and modeling, and system delay. This dissertation focuses on new methods that could be considered part of "the last mile" of spatio-temporal registration in AR: closed-loop spatial registration and low-latency temporal registration: 1. For spatial registration, the primary insight is that calibration, tracking and modeling are means to an end---the ultimate goal is registration. In this spirit I present a novel pixel-wise closed-loop registration approach that can automatically minimize registration errors using a reference model comprised of the real scene model and the desired virtual augmentations. Registration errors are minimized in both global world space via camera pose refinement, and local screen space via pixel-wise adjustments. This approach is presented in the context of Video See-Through AR (VST-AR) and projector-based Spatial AR (SAR), where registration results are measurable using a commodity color camera. 2. For temporal registration, the primary insight is that the real-virtual relationships are evolving throughout the tracking, rendering, scanout, and display steps, and registration can be improved by leveraging fine-grained processing and display mechanisms. In this spirit I introduce a general end-to-end system pipeline with low latency, and propose an algorithm for minimizing latency in displays (DLP DMD projectors in particular). This approach is presented in the context of Optical See-Through AR (OST-AR), where system delay is the most detrimental source of error. I also discuss future steps that may further improve spatio-temporal registration. Particularly, I discuss possibilities for using custom virtual or physical-virtual fiducials for closed-loop registration in SAR. The custom fiducials can be designed to elicit desirable optical signals that directly indicate any error in the relative pose between the physical and projected virtual objects.Doctor of Philosoph

    Integration, Testing, And Analysis Of Multispectral Imager On Small Unmanned Aerial System For Skin Detection

    Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) have been utilized by the military, geological researchers, and first responders, to provide information about the environment in real time. Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI) provides high resolution data in the spatial and spectral dimension; all objects, including skin have unique spectral signatures. However, little research has been done to integrate HSI into SUAS due to their cost and form factor. Multispectral Imagery (MSI) has proven capable of dismount detection with several distinct wavelengths. This research proposes a spectral imaging system that can detect dismounts on SUAS. Also, factors that pertain to accurate dismount detection with an SUAS are explored. Dismount skin detection from an aerial platform also has an inherent difficulty compared to ground-based platforms. Computer vision registration, stereo camera calibration, and geolocation from autopilot telemetry are utilized to design a dismount detection platform with the Systems Engineering methodology. An average 5.112% difference in ROC AUC values that compared a line scan spectral imager to the prototype area scan imager was recorded. Results indicated that an SUAS-based Spectral Imagers are capable tools in dismount detection protocols. Deficiencies associated with the test expedient prototype are discussed and recommendations for further improvements are provided

    An Earth scanning six channel (detector) radiometer using a classical Cassegrain telescope and a Wadsworth type grating spectrometer was launched aboard Nimbus 7 in order to determine the abundance or density of chlorophyll at or near the sea surface in coastal waters. The instrument also measures the sediment or gelbstroffe (yellow stuff) in coastal waters, detects surface vegetation, and measures sea surface temperature.     Study of time-lapse processing for dynamic hydrologic conditions

    The usefulness of dynamic display techniques in exploiting the repetitive nature of ERTS imagery was investigated. A specially designed Electronic Satellite Image Analysis Console (ESIAC) was developed and employed to process data for seven ERTS principal investigators studying dynamic hydrological conditions for diverse applications. These applications include measurement of snowfield extent and sediment plumes from estuary discharge, Playa Lake inventory, and monitoring of phreatophyte and other vegetation changes. The ESIAC provides facilities for storing registered image sequences in a magnetic video disc memory for subsequent recall, enhancement, and animated display in monochrome or color. The most unique feature of the system is the capability to time lapse the imagery and analytic displays of the imagery. Data products included quantitative measurements of distances and areas, binary thematic maps based on monospectral or multispectral decisions, radiance profiles, and movie loops. Applications of animation for uses other than creating time-lapse sequences are identified. Input to the ESIAC can be either digital or via photographic transparencies

    The Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor (MAMS): Instrument description, calibration and data quality

    A new instrument has been developed to produce high resolution imagery in eight visible and three infared spectral bands from an aircraft platform. An analysis of the data and calibration procedures has shown that useful data can be obtained at up to 50 m resolution with a 2.5 milliradian aperture. Single sample standard errors for the measurements are 0.5, 0.2, and 0.9 K for the 6.5, 11.1, and 12.3 micron spectral bands, respectively. These errors are halved when a 5.0 milliradian aperture is used to obtain 100 m resolution data. Intercomparisons with VAS and AVHRR measurements show good relative calibration.     Interactive Training System for Medical Ultrasound

    Ultrasound is an effective imaging modality because it is safe, unobtrusive and portable. However, it is also very operator-dependent and significant skill is required to capture quality images and properly detect abnormalities. Training is an important part of ultrasound, but the limited availability of training courses presents a significant hindrance to the use of ultrasound being used in additional settings. The goal of this work was to design and implement an interactive training system to help train and evaluate sonographers. The Interactive Training System for Medical Ultrasound is an inexpensive, software-based training system in which the trainee scans a lifelike manikin with a sham transducer containing a 6 degree of freedom tracking sensor. The observed ultrasound image is generated from a pre-stored 3D image volume and is controlled interactively by the sham transducer\u27s position and orientation. Based on the selected 3D volume, the manikin may represent normal anatomy, exhibit a specific trauma or present a given physical condition. The training system provides a realistic scanning experience by providing an interactive real-time display with adjustable image parameters such as scan depth, gain, and time gain compensation. A representative hardware interface has been developed including a lifelike manikin and convincing sham transducers, along with a touch screen user interface. Methods of capturing 3D ultrasound image volumes and stitching together multiple volumes have been evaluated. System performance was analyzed and an initial clinical evaluation was performed. This thesis presents a complete prototype training system with advanced simulation and learning assessment features. The ultrasound training system can provide cost-effective and convenient training of physicians and sonographers. This system is an innovative approach to training and is a powerful tool for training sonographers in recognizing a wide variety of medical conditions

    Spaceborne synthetic-aperture imaging radars: Applications, techniques, and technology

    In the last four years, the first two Earth-orbiting, space-borne, synthetic-aperture imaging radars (SAR) were successfully developed and operated. This was a major achievement in the development of spaceborne radar sensors and ground processors. The data acquired with these sensors extended the capability of Earth resources and ocean-surface observation into a new region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This paper is a review of the different aspects of spaceborne imaging radars. It includes a review of: 1) the unique characteristics of space-borne SAR systems; 2) the state of the art in spaceborne SAR hardware and SAR optical and digital processors; 3) the different data-handling techniques; and 4) the different applications of spaceborne SAR data

    Synthetic aperture radar/LANDSAT MSS image registration

    Algorithms and procedures necessary to merge aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery were determined. The design of a SAR/LANDSAT data merging system was developed. Aircraft SAR images were registered to the corresponding LANDSAT MSS scenes and were the subject of experimental investigations. Results indicate that the registration of SAR imagery with LANDSAT MSS imagery is feasible from a technical viewpoint, and useful from an information-content viewpoint
