Current Development: Learning without Boundary: Application of Satellite Communication System on Distance Education

    Get PDF
Nowadays, the concept of global village has been developed over the world due to the development of communication technology. The information boundaries between areas and regions are gradually eliminated. People are able to have long-distance communication and information exchange, such as searching information via the Internet and making long distance calls that include images. The convenience of communication brought by the technology is applied to education as well

Satellite Communications: Impact on Developing Economies

    Get PDF
Access to information and communication infrastructure greatly enhances economic growth. When a reliable and affordable medium for information exchange is available, previously unanticipated developments ensue. Most areas in developing countries are sparsely populated and highly rural. Satellite communication is an excellent option for meeting this and many other pressing communication needs of developing economies. This paper examines the impact of satellite communication on developing economies, using popular examples as case study

Video Conference as a tool for Higher Education

    Get PDF
The book describes the activities of the consortium member institutions in the framework of the TEMPUS IV Joint Project ViCES - Video Conferencing Educational Services (144650-TEMPUS-2008-IT-JPGR). In order to provide the basis for the development of a distance learning environment based on video conferencing systems and develop a blended learning courses methodology, the TEMPUS Project VICES (2009-2012) was launched in 2009. This publication collects the conclusion of the project and it reports the main outcomes together with the approach followed by the different partners towards the achievement of the project's goal. The book includes several contributions focussed on specific topics related to videoconferencing services, namely how to enable such services in educational contexts so that, the installation and deployment of videoconferencing systems could be conceived an integral part of virtual open campuses

A generic service management architecture for multimedia multipoint communications

    Get PDF
With rapid advances in multimedia processing technologies, and in high bandwidth network technologies, new kinds of multimedia applications are now emerging. These applications require real-time, multimedia, and multipoint interactions involving multiple communicating entities and leading to a need of more sophisticated communication control functionalities. In this paper, a generic integrated and flexible service management architecture for multimedia multipoint communications is proposed, which offers three main generic functions, namely Quality of Service (QoS) negotiation, QoS monitoring and control, and session management

Collaborative tools for the LHC: update on recent activities

"I report on current activities in the domain of Collaborative Tools, focusing on development for the LHC collaborations [1] and HENP (High Energy and Nuclear Physics), in general, including audio and video conferencing, web archiving, and secure collaborative environments. This note addresses the follow-up to the LCG RTAG 12 Final Report [2] (presented at CHEP 2006 [3]), including formation of the RCTF (Remote Collaboration Task Force) to steer planning and development, installation of prototype facilities at CERN, and funding scenarios. I also summarize the Shaping Collaboration [4] conference held in Geneva in December 2006, and discuss issues facing the LHC collaborations in the coming years."http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/64201/1/jpconf8_119_082002.pd

The Hot Topic Community: Videoconferencing to reduce the professional isolation of teachers in rural Western Australia

    Get PDF
Access to quality professional learning and the opportunity to collaborate with other educators can be limited for teachers in rural and remote areas of Western Australia. A recognised need to enhance the skills of rural teaching professionals and encourage teachers in small communities to join collegial networks was established by the members of several professional organisations. A working group consisting of representatives from the Australian College of Educators-WA (ACE-WA), the Rural and Remote Education Advisory Council (RREAC), the Society for the Provision of Education in Rural Australia (SPERA) and the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) provided teachers in rural areas with the opportunity to reduce professional isolation through the provision of relevant, convenient, and cost effective in-service education. Through a videoconferencing system, accessed within the Western Australian Telecentre Network and other educational organisations, the audience connected and participated with the presenter and studio based audience for two Hot Topics Seminars in 2008. This paper reports on the challenges and successes encountered by the working group and the findings of the research conducted throughout 2008
