National audienceIn recent years, public displays have been studied as a way to foster citizen participation. However, their surroundings and users are prone to high variability, which makes it tedious to accommodate different contexts with an optimal participation experience. In this paper, we propose adaptive public displays as a lead for solution in tackling this issue. From a review of the motivators and barriers affecting citizen's interaction with public displays we defined a process model destined to serve as a guide for designers of such systems.

Insightful analysis of historical sources at scales beyond human capabilities using unsupervised Machine Learning and XAI

Historical materials are abundant. Yet, piecing together how human knowledge has evolved and spread both diachronically and synchronically remains a challenge that can so far only be very selectively addressed. The vast volume of materials precludes comprehensive studies, given the restricted number of human specialists. However, as large amounts of historical materials are now available in digital form there is a promising opportunity for AI-assisted historical analysis. In this work, we take a pivotal step towards analyzing vast historical corpora by employing innovative machine learning (ML) techniques, enabling in-depth historical insights on a grand scale. Our study centers on the evolution of knowledge within the `Sacrobosco Collection' -- a digitized collection of 359 early modern printed editions of textbooks on astronomy used at European universities between 1472 and 1650 -- roughly 76,000 pages, many of which contain astronomic, computational tables. An ML based analysis of these tables helps to unveil important facets of the spatio-temporal evolution of knowledge and innovation in the field of mathematical astronomy in the period, as taught at European universities

Interactivity, Ethical Behaviors, and Transmediation in Esports: An Analysis of Pokémon Through Uses and Gratifications Theory

Nintendo’s Pokémon is a family-friendly transmedia franchise that recently added esports to its diverse forms of entertainment. This thesis analyzes how the esports practices of Pokémon maintain an inclusive community along with the cultural values and ideology of its company. Elihu Katz et al.’s framing of uses and gratifications theory is used to analyze Pokémon esports practices and its transmediation because it emphasizes the importance of fulfillment and belonging for media consumers based on their needs. By examining Pokémon esports competitions through uses and gratifications theory, I argue Pokémon increases interactivity, promotes ethical behaviors, and expands its brand value across media to address its community’s specific needs. My research furthers the work of media studies scholars Yu-Ling Lin et al., Tanner Higgin, Henry Jenkins, and others. By examining how Pokémon’s gaming franchise is inclusive and accessible to players, the thesis broadens existing scholarship on the social, ethical, and entertainment aspects of esports

Todos santos, or día de los muertos, is one of the most important and globally most visible Mexican festivities celebrating the return of the dead to their families, through the enticement of their favorite foodstuffs. This article looks ethnographically at the re-design of an exhibition on food as part of the re-modeling of the permanent exhibition at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden. This re-design contains an audiovisual representation of todos santos. Based on the author’s participation in the process of planning the exhibition with the team of curators in the course of its design and filming todos santos in a Mexican community in Berlin for this museum exhibition, sensory re-and de- contextualization and the question of sensory authorship are discussed.

Saliency detection has become a very prominent subject for research in recent time. Many techniques has been defined for the saliency detection. In this paper number of techniques has been explained that include the saliency detection from the year 2000 to 2015, almost every technique has been included.all the methods are explained briefly including their advantages and disadvantages. Comparison between various techniques has been done. With the help of table which includes authors name, paper name, year, techniques, algorithms and challenges. A comparison between levels of acceptance rates and accuracy levels are made
