    An application of decision trees method for fault diagnosis of induction motors

    Decision tree is one of the most effective and widely used methods for building classification model. Researchers from various disciplines such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, and data mining have considered the decision tree method as an effective solution to their field problems. In this paper, an application of decision tree method to classify the faults of induction motors is proposed. The original data from experiment is dealt with feature calculation to get the useful information as attributes. These data are then assigned the classes which are based on our experience before becoming data inputs for decision tree. The total 9 classes are defined. An implementation of decision tree written in Matlab is used for these data

    Adaptation of a modern medium helicopter (Sikorsky S-76) to higher harmonic control

    Sikorsky Aircraft has performed analytical studies, design analyses, and risk reduction tests have been performed for Higher Harmonic Control (HHC) on the S-76. The S-76 is an 8 to 10,000 lb helicopter which cruises at 145 kts. Flight test hardware has been assembled, main servo frequency response tested and upgraded, aircraft control system shake tested and verified, open loop controllers designed and fabricated, closed loop controllers defined and evaluated, and rotors turning ground and flight tests planned for the near future. Open loop analysis shows that about 2 deg of higher harmonic feathering at the blade 75% radius will be required to eliminate 4P vibration in the cockpit

    Fault detection in operating helicopter drive train components based on support vector data description

    The objective of the paper is to develop a vibration-based automated procedure dealing with early detection of mechanical degradation of helicopter drive train components using Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) data. An anomaly-detection method devoted to the quantification of the degree of deviation of the mechanical state of a component from its nominal condition is developed. This method is based on an Anomaly Score (AS) formed by a combination of a set of statistical features correlated with specific damages, also known as Condition Indicators (CI), thus the operational variability is implicitly included in the model through the CI correlation. The problem of fault detection is then recast as a one-class classification problem in the space spanned by a set of CI, with the aim of a global differentiation between normal and anomalous observations, respectively related to healthy and supposedly faulty components. In this paper, a procedure based on an efficient one-class classification method that does not require any assumption on the data distribution, is used. The core of such an approach is the Support Vector Data Description (SVDD), that allows an efficient data description without the need of a significant amount of statistical data. Several analyses have been carried out in order to validate the proposed procedure, using flight vibration data collected from a H135, formerly known as EC135, servicing helicopter, for which micro-pitting damage on a gear was detected by HUMS and assessed through visual inspection. The capability of the proposed approach of providing better trade-off between false alarm rates and missed detection rates with respect to individual CI and to the AS obtained assuming jointly-Gaussian-distributed CI has been also analysed

    High-performance control of dual-inertia servo-drive systems using low-cost integrated SAW torque transducers

    Abstract—This paper provides a systematic comparative study of compensation schemes for the coordinated motion control of two-inertia mechanical systems. Specifically, classical proportional–integral (PI), proportional–integral–derivative (PID), and resonance ratio control (RRC) are considered, with an enhanced structure based on RRC, termed RRC+, being proposed. Motor-side and load-side dynamics for each control structure are identified, with the “integral of time multiplied by absolute error” performance index being employed as a benchmark metric. PID and RRC control schemes are shown to be identical from a closed-loop perspective, albeit employing different feedback sensing mechanisms. A qualitative study of the practical effects of employing each methodology shows that RRC-type structures provide preferred solutions if low-cost high-performance torque transducers can be employed, for instance, those based on surface acoustic wave tecnologies. Moreover, the extra degree of freedom afforded by both PID and RRC, as compared with the basic PI, is shown to be sufficient to simultaneously induce optimal closed-loop performance and independent selection of virtual inertia ratio. Furthermore, the proposed RRC+ scheme is subsequently shown to additionally facilitate independent assignment of closed-loop bandwidth. Summary attributes of the investigation are validated by both simulation studies and by realization of the methodologies for control of a custom-designed two-inertia system

    Development of an annoyance model based upon elementary auditory sensations for steady-state aircraft interior noise containing tonal components

    The purpose of this investigation was to develop a noise annoyance model, superior to those already in use, for evaluating passenger response to sounds containing tonal components which may be heard within current and future commercial aircraft. The sound spectra investigated ranged from those being experienced by passengers on board turbofan powered aircraft now in service to those cabin noise spectra passengers may experience within advanced propeller-driven aircraft of the future. A total of 240 sounds were tested in this experiment. Sixty-six of these 240 sounds were steady state, while the other 174 varied temporally due to tonal beating. Here, the entire experiment is described, but the analysis is limited to those responses elicited by the 66 steady-state sounds

    Observer-based tuning of two-inertia servo-drive systems with integrated SAW torque transducers

    This paper proposes controller design and tuning methodologies that facilitate the rejection of periodic load-side disturbances applied to a torsional mechanical system while simultaneously compensating for the observer’s inherent phase delay. This facilitates the use of lower-bandwidth practically realizable disturbance observers. The merits of implementing full- and reduced-order observers are investigated, with the latter being implemented with a new low-cost servo-machine-integrated highband width torque-sensing device based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. Specifically, the authors’ previous work based on proportional–integral–derivative (PID) and resonance ratio control (RRC) controllers (IEEE Trans. Ind. Electron., vol. 53, no. 4, pp. 1226–1237, Aug. 2006) is augmented with observer disturbance feedback. It is shown that higher-bandwidth disturbance observers are required to maximize disturbance attenuation over the low-frequency band (as well as the desired rejection frequency), thereby attenuating a wide range of possible frequencies. In such cases, therefore, it is shown that the RRC controller is the preferred solution since it can employ significantly higher observer bandwidth, when compared to PID counterparts, by virtue of reduced noise sensitivity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the prototype servo-machine-integrated 20-N · mSAWtorque transducer is not unduly affected by machine-generated electromagnetic noise and exhibits similar dynamic behavior as a conventional instrument inline torque transducer

    Helicopter Rotor Blade Monitoring using Autonomous Wireless Sensor Network

    The advancement on Wireless Sensor Networks for vibration monitoring presents important possibilities for helicopter rotor health and usage monitoring. While main rotor blades account for the main source of lift for helicopters, rotor induced vibration establishes an important source for understanding the rotor performance and blade condition. A discussion on the dual character of blades as rotating structures results in two different interrogation strategies for external and internal dynamic loading on the blade. The first strategy aims for in-flight rotor performance monitoring, while the second pursues health assessment. An overview of different measurements performed on an actual helicopter blade is presented. The measurements include a complete modal analysis using a full wired instrumented blade and a comparison between wireless sensor nodes and wired instrumentation. Additionally, a numerical multibody dynamics model for damage simulation is presented. The experimental and numerical work contribute to the identification of several implications on the migration of condition and health monitoring techniques to a wireless setting

    High Accuracy Fuel Flowmeter, Phase 1

    Technology related to aircraft fuel mass - flowmeters was reviewed to determine what flowmeter types could provide 0.25%-of-point accuracy over a 50 to one range in flowrates. Three types were selected and were further analyzed to determine what problem areas prevented them from meeting the high accuracy requirement, and what the further development needs were for each. A dual-turbine volumetric flowmeter with densi-viscometer and microprocessor compensation was selected for its relative simplicity and fast response time. An angular momentum type with a motor-driven, spring-restrained turbine and viscosity shroud was selected for its direct mass-flow output. This concept also employed a turbine for fast response and a microcomputer for accurate viscosity compensation. The third concept employed a vortex precession volumetric flowmeter and was selected for its unobtrusive design. Like the turbine flowmeter, it uses a densi-viscometer and microprocessor for density correction and accurate viscosity compensation

    Amplitude and frequency control of a vibratory pile driver

    Abstract—This paper describes the digital control of a vibratory pile driver in which the vibration is generated via two tandem pairs of electrically driven, geared, contra-rotating eccentrics. Experimental results are included to show the controller-induced system dynamics for a variety of load condtions, and to highlight the fact that, if the relative phase of the eccentric pairs is not controlled, the natural tendency at high excitation frequency is for the pile driver to operate with a low vibration amplitude. An analytical technique for identifying the system parameters is presented, and analytical performance predictions are compared with experimental results. Analysis of the power flow in the system shows that, although significant power transfer occurs between the two electrical drives, the net power dissipation during pile driving is relatively low
