Verification of Policy-based Self-Managed Cell Interactions Using Alloy
Abstract—Self-Managed Cells (SMCs) define an infrastruc-ture for building ubiquitous computing applications. An SMC consists of an autonomous administrative domain based on a policy-driven feedback control-loop. SMCs are able to interact with each other and compose with other SMCs to form larger autonomous components. In this paper we present a formal specification of an SMC’s behaviour for the analysis and verification of its operation in collaborations of SMCs. These collaborations typically involve SMCs originated from different administrative authorities, and the definition of a formal model has helped us to verify the correctness of their operation when SMCs are composed or federated. Supporting Management lnteraction and Composition of Self-Managed Cells
Management in ubiquitous systems cannot rely on human intervention or centralised
decision-making functions because systems are complex and devices
are inherently mobile and cannot refer to centralised management applications
for reconfiguration and adaptation directives. Management must be devolved,
based on local decision-making and feedback control-loops embedded in autonomous
components. Previous work has introduced a Self-Managed Cell (SMC)
as an infrastructure for building ubiquitous applications. An SMC consists
of a set of hardware and software components that implement a policy-driven
feedback control-loop. This allows SMCs to adapt continually to changes in
their environment or in their usage requirements. Typical applications include
body-area networks for healthcare monitoring, and communities of unmanned
autonomous vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
Ubiquitous applications are typically formed from multiple interacting autonomous
components, which establish peer-to-peer collaborations, federate and
compose into larger structures. Components must interact to distribute management
tasks and to enforce communication strategies. This thesis presents
an integrated framework which supports the design and the rapid establishment
of policy-based SMC interactions by systematically composing simpler abstractions
as building elements of a more complex collaboration. Policy-based
interactions are realised – subject to an extensible set of security functions –
through the exchanges of interfaces, policies and events, and our framework
was designed to support the specification, instantiation and reuse of patterns of
interaction that prescribe the manner in which these exchanges are achieved.
We have defined a library of patterns that provide reusable abstractions for
the structure, task-allocation and communication aspects of an interaction,
which can be individually combined for building larger policy-based systems in
a methodical manner. We have specified a formal model to ensure the rigorous
verification of SMC interactions before policies are deployed in physical devices.
A prototype has been implemented that demonstrates the practical feasibility
of our framework in constrained resources
Advanced power sources for space missions
Approaches to satisfying the power requirements of space-based Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) missions are studied. The power requirements for non-SDI military space missions and for civil space missions of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are also considered. The more demanding SDI power requirements appear to encompass many, if not all, of the power requirements for those missions. Study results indicate that practical fulfillment of SDI requirements will necessitate substantial advances in the state of the art of power technology. SDI goals include the capability to operate space-based beam weapons, sometimes referred to as directed-energy weapons. Such weapons pose unprecedented power requirements, both during preparation for battle and during battle conditions. The power regimes for these two sets of applications are referred to as alert mode and burst mode, respectively. Alert-mode power requirements are presently stated to range from about 100 kW to a few megawatts for cumulative durations of about a year or more. Burst-mode power requirements are roughly estimated to range from tens to hundreds of megawatts for durations of a few hundred to a few thousand seconds. There are two likely energy sources, chemical and nuclear, for powering SDI directed-energy weapons during the alert and burst modes. The choice between chemical and nuclear space power systems depends in large part on the total duration during which power must be provided. Advanced Manned Launch System (AMLS) study
To assure national leadership in space operations and exploration in the future, NASA must be able to provide cost effective and operationally efficient space transportation. Several NASA studies and the joint NASA/DoD Space Transportation Architecture Studies (STAS) have shown the need for a multi-vehicle space transportation system with designs driven by enhanced operations and low costs. NASA is currently studying an advanced manned launch system (AMLS) approach to transport crew and cargo to the Space Station Freedom. Several single and multiple stage systems from air-breathing to all-rocket concepts are being examined in a series of studies potential replacements for the Space Shuttle launch system in the 2000-2010 time frame. Rockwell International Corporation, under contract to the NASA Langley Research Center, has analyzed a two-stage all-rocket concept to determine whether this class of vehicles is appropriate for the AMLS function. Computer Science and Technology Series : XV Argentine Congress of Computer Science. Selected papers
CACIC'09 was the fifteenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Engineering of the National University of Jujuy. The Congress included 9 Workshops with 130 accepted papers, 1 main Conference, 4 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. CACIC 2009 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 9 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of three chairs of different Universities.
The call for papers attracted a total of 267 submissions. An average of 2.7 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 720 review reports that involved about 300 different reviewers.

Adaptability Checking in Multi-Level Complex Systems
A hierarchical model for multi-level adaptive systems is built on two basic
levels: a lower behavioural level B accounting for the actual behaviour of the
system and an upper structural level S describing the adaptation dynamics of
the system. The behavioural level is modelled as a state machine and the
structural level as a higher-order system whose states have associated logical
formulas (constraints) over observables of the behavioural level. S is used to
capture the global and stable features of B, by a defining set of allowed
behaviours. The adaptation semantics is such that the upper S level imposes
constraints on the lower B level, which has to adapt whenever it no longer can
satisfy them. In this context, we introduce weak and strong adaptabil- ity,
i.e. the ability of a system to adapt for some evolution paths or for all
possible evolutions, respectively. We provide a relational characterisation for
these two notions and we show that adaptability checking, i.e. deciding if a
system is weak or strong adaptable, can be reduced to a CTL model checking
problem. We apply the model and the theoretical results to the case study of

Emerging research directions in computer science : contributions from the young informatics faculty in Karlsruhe
In order to build better human-friendly human-computer interfaces,
such interfaces need to be enabled with capabilities to perceive
the user, his location, identity, activities and in particular his interaction
with others and the machine. Only with these perception capabilities
can smart systems ( for example human-friendly robots or smart environments) become posssible. In my research I\u27m thus focusing on the
development of novel techniques for the visual perception of humans and
their activities, in order to facilitate perceptive multimodal interfaces,
humanoid robots and smart environments. My work includes research
on person tracking, person identication, recognition of pointing gestures,
estimation of head orientation and focus of attention, as well as
audio-visual scene and activity analysis. Application areas are humanfriendly
humanoid robots, smart environments, content-based image and
video analysis, as well as safety- and security-related applications. This
article gives a brief overview of my ongoing research activities in these
areas
