    Five-Axis Machine Tool Condition Monitoring Using dSPACE Real-Time System

    This paper presents the design, development and SIMULINK implementation of the lumped parameter model of C-axis drive from GEISS five-axis CNC machine tool. The simulated results compare well with the experimental data measured from the actual machine. Also the paper describes the steps for data acquisition using ControlDesk and hardware-in-the-loop implementation of the drive models in dSPACE real-time system. The main components of the HIL system are: the drive model simulation and input – output (I/O) modules for receiving the real controller outputs. The paper explains how the experimental data obtained from the data acquisition process using dSPACE real-time system can be used for the development of machine tool diagnosis and prognosis systems that facilitate the improvement of maintenance activities

    Embedded Controller Design for Mechatronics System

    Many mechatronic systems have challenging control difficulties due to the high nonlinear structures and time‐varying dynamic behaviors. In addition to these, there are external disturbances, which cannot be predicted and change according to uncontrolled working environments. Conventional controllers are insufficient to solve the aforementioned problems and to compensate the environmental disturbances. Therefore, adaptive controllers have been proposed as a solution to these inefficiencies of conventional controllers. Adaptive control is applied for solving the control problem of the mechatronic sun tracker that ensures the movement of the mechanism to harvest maximum energy coming from solar to the PV module surface during the sunshine duration. For this type of control problems, conventional controllers are very limited and they have a lot of deficiencies. The adaptive mechanism governed by an adaptation law is the heart of any adaptive controller. We establish the adaptation law for the plant control system using Lyapunov stability theory. This adaptation law is precise for a generic second‐order system; hence, it is obviously applicable for adaptive control of other second‐order systems in different realms, such as industrial production system, military, and robotics

A focus is given to environmental mechatronic applications within the chain “Renewable energy production - Smart grids - Electric vehicles”. For the considered mechatronic systems, the main design targets are formulated, the relations to state and parameter estimation, disturbance observation and rejection as well as control algorithms are highlighted. Finally, the study introduces an interdisciplinary design approach based on the intersectoral transfer of knowledge and collaborative experimental activities

    Mechatronics of systems with undetermined configurations

    This work is submitted for the award of a PhD by published works. It deals with some of the efforts of the author over the last ten years in the field of Mechatronics. Mechatronics is a new area invented by the Japanese in the late 1970's, it consists of a synthesis of computers and electronics to improve mechanical systems. To control any mechanical event three fundamental features must be brought together: the sensors used to observe the process, the control software, including the control algorithm used and thirdly the actuator that provides the stimulus to achieve the end result. Simulation, which plays such an important part in the Mechatronics process, is used in both in continuous and discrete forms. The author has spent some considerable time developing skills in all these areas. The author was certainly the first at Middlesex to appreciate the new developments in Mechatronics and their significance for manufacturing. The author was one of the first mechanical engineers to recognise the significance of the new transputer chip. This was applied to the LQG optimal control of a cinefilm copying process. A 300% improvement in operating speed was achieved, together with tension control. To make more efficient use of robots they have to be made both faster and cheaper. The author found extremely low natural frequencies of vibration, ranging from 3 to 25 Hz. This limits the speed of response of existing robots. The vibration data was some of the earliest available in this field, certainly in the UK. Several schemes have been devised to control the flexible robot and maintain the required precision. Actuator technology is one area where mechatronic systems have been the subject of intense development. At Middlesex we have improved on the Aexator pneumatic muscle actuator, enabling it to be used with a precision of about 2 mm. New control challenges have been undertaken now in the field of machine tool chatter and the prevention of slip. A variety of novel and traditional control algorithms have been investigated in order to find out the best approach to solve this problem

    Co-Simulation in Virtual Verification of Vehicles with Mechatronic Systems

    In virtual verification of vehicle and mechatronic systems, a mixture of subsystems are integrated numerically in an offline simulation or integrated physically in a hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulation. This heterogeneous engineering approach is crucial for system-level development and widely spreads with\ua0the industrial standard, e.g. Functional Mock-Up Interface (FMI) standard.For the engineers, not only the local subsystem and solver should be known,\ua0but also the global coupled dynamic system and its coupling effect need to be\ua0understood. Both the local and global factors influence the stability, accuracy, numerical efficiency and further on the real-time simulation capability.In this thesis, the explicit parallel co-simulation, which is the most common and closest to the integration with a physical system, is investigated.In the vehicle development, the vehicle and the mechatronic system, e.g. an\ua0Electrcial Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system can be simulated moreefficiently by a tailored solver and communicative step. The accuracy and\ua0numerical stability problem, which highly depends on the interface dynamics, can be investigated similarly in the linear robust control framework. The\ua0vehicle-mechatronic system should be coupled to give a smaller loop gain for robustness and stability. Physically, it indicates that the splitting part\ua0should be less stiff and the force or torque variable should be applied towardsthe part with a higher impedance in the force-displacement coupling. Furthermore, to compensate the troublesome low-passed and delay effect fromthe coupling, a new coupling method based on H∞ synthesis is developed,\ua0which can improve the accuracy of co-simulation. The method shows robustness to the system dynamics, which makes it more applicable for a complex\ua0vehicle-mechatronic system

    A Case Study on Formal Verification of Self-Adaptive Behaviors in a Decentralized System

    Self-adaptation is a promising approach to manage the complexity of modern software systems. A self-adaptive system is able to adapt autonomously to internal dynamics and changing conditions in the environment to achieve particular quality goals. Our particular interest is in decentralized self-adaptive systems, in which central control of adaptation is not an option. One important challenge in self-adaptive systems, in particular those with decentralized control of adaptation, is to provide guarantees about the intended runtime qualities. In this paper, we present a case study in which we use model checking to verify behavioral properties of a decentralized self-adaptive system. Concretely, we contribute with a formalized architecture model of a decentralized traffic monitoring system and prove a number of self-adaptation properties for flexibility and robustness. To model the main processes in the system we use timed automata, and for the specification of the required properties we use timed computation tree logic.     Towards Digital Twin-enabled DevOps for CPS providing Architecture-Based Service Adaptation & Verification at Runtime

    Industrial Product-Service Systems (IPSS) denote a service-oriented (SO) way of providing access to CPS capabilities. The design of such systems bears high risk due to uncertainty in requirements related to service function and behavior, operation environments, and evolving customer needs. Such risks and uncertainties are well known in the IT sector, where DevOps principles ensure continuous system improvement through reliable and frequent delivery processes. A modular and SO system architecture complements these processes to facilitate IT system adaptation and evolution. This work proposes a method to use and extend the Digital Twins (DTs) of IPSS assets for enabling the continuous optimization of CPS service delivery and the latter's adaptation to changing needs and environments. This reduces uncertainty during design and operations by assuring IPSS integrity and availability, especially for design and service adaptations at CPS runtime. The method builds on transferring IT DevOps principles to DT-enabled CPS IPSS. The chosen design approach integrates, reuses, and aligns the DT processing and communication resources with DevOps requirements derived from literature. We use these requirements to propose a DT-enabled self-adaptive CPS model, which guides the realization of DT-enabled DevOps in CPS IPSS. We further propose detailed design models for operation-critical DTs that integrate CPS closed-loop control and architecture-based CPS adaptation. This integrated approach enables the implementation of A/B testing as a use case and central concept to enable CPS IPSS service adaptation and reconfiguration. The self-adaptive CPS model and DT design concept have been validated in an evaluation environment for operation-critical CPS IPSS.
