    Development of Robust Control Strategies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    The resources of the energy and chemical balance in the ocean sustain mankind in many ways. Therefore, ocean exploration is an essential task that is accomplished by deploying Underwater Vehicles. An Underwater Vehicle with autonomy feature for its navigation and control is called Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Among the task handled by an AUV, accurately positioning itself at a desired position with respect to the reference objects is called set-point control. Similarly, tracking of the reference trajectory is also another important task. Battery recharging of AUV, positioning with respect to underwater structure, cable, seabed, tracking of reference trajectory with desired accuracy and speed to avoid collision with the guiding vehicle in the last phase of docking are some significant applications where an AUV needs to perform the above tasks. Parametric uncertainties in AUV dynamics and actuator torque limitation necessitate to design robust control algorithms to achieve motion control objectives in the face of uncertainties. Sliding Mode Controller (SMC), H / μ synthesis, model based PID group controllers are some of the robust controllers which have been applied to AUV. But SMC suffers from less efficient tuning of its switching gains due to model parameters and noisy estimated acceleration states appearing in its control law. In addition, demand of high control effort due to high frequency chattering is another drawback of SMC. Furthermore, real-time implementation of H / μ synthesis controller based on its stability study is restricted due to use of linearly approximated dynamic model of an AUV, which hinders achieving robustness. Moreover, model based PID group controllers suffer from implementation complexities and exhibit poor transient and steady-state performances under parametric uncertainties. On the other hand model free Linear PID (LPID) has inherent problem of narrow convergence region, i.e.it can not ensure convergence of large initial error to zero. Additionally, it suffers from integrator-wind-up and subsequent saturation of actuator during the occurrence of large initial error. But LPID controller has inherent capability to cope up with the uncertainties. In view of addressing the above said problem, this work proposes wind-up free Nonlinear PID with Bounded Integral (BI) and Bounded Derivative (BD) for set-point control and combination of continuous SMC with Nonlinear PID with BI and BD namely SM-N-PID with BI and BD for trajectory tracking. Nonlinear functions are used for all P,I and D controllers (for both of set-point and tracking control) in addition to use of nonlinear tan hyperbolic function in SMC(for tracking only) such that torque demand from the controller can be kept within a limit. A direct Lyapunov analysis is pursued to prove stable motion of AUV. The efficacies of the proposed controllers are compared with other two controllers namely PD and N-PID without BI and BD for set-point control and PD plus Feedforward Compensation (FC) and SM-NPID without BI and BD for tracking control. Multiple AUVs cooperatively performing a mission offers several advantages over a single AUV in a non-cooperative manner; such as reliability and increased work efficiency, etc. Bandwidth limitation in acoustic medium possess challenges in designing cooperative motion control algorithm for multiple AUVs owing to the necessity of communication of sensors and actuator signals among AUVs. In literature, undirected graph based approach is used for control design under communication constraints and thus it is not suitable for large number of AUVs participating in a cooperative motion plan. Formation control is a popular cooperative motion control paradigm. This thesis models the formation as a minimally persistent directed graph and proposes control schemes for maintaining the distance constraints during the course of motion of entire formation. For formation control each AUV uses Sliding Mode Nonlinear PID controller with Bounded Integrator and Bounded Derivative. Direct Lyapunov stability analysis in the framework of input-to-state stability ensures the stable motion of formation while maintaining the desired distance constraints among the AUVs

    Pose Detection and Control of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) Utilizing an Optical Detector Array

    As part of the research for development of a leader-follower formation between unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), this study presents an optical feedback system for UUV navigation via an optical detector array. Capabilities of pose detection and control in a static-dynamic system (e.g. UUV navigation into a docking station) and a dynamic-dynamic system (e.g. UUV to UUV leader-follower system) are investigated. In both systems, a single light source is utilized as a guiding beacon for a tracker/follower UUV. The UUV uses an optical array consisting of photodiodes to receive the light field emitted from the light source. For UUV navigation applications, accurate pose estimation is essential. In order to evaluate the feasibility of underwater distance detection, the effective communication range between two platforms, i.e. light source and optical detector, and the optimum spectral range that allowed maximum light transmission are calculated. Based on the light attenuation in underwater, the geometry and dimensions of an optical detector array are determined, and the boundary conditions for the developed pose detection algorithms along with the error sources in the experiments are identified. As a test bed to determine optical array dimensions and size, a simulator, i.e. numerical software, is developed, where planar and curved array geometries of varying number of elements are analytically compared and evaluated. Results show that the curved optical detector array is able to distinguish 5 degree- of-freedom (DOF) motion (translation in x, y, z-axes and pitch and yaw rotations) with respect to a single light source. Analytical pose detection and control algorithms are developed for both static-dynamic and dynamic-dynamic systems. Results show that a 5 x 5 curved detector array with the implementation of SMC is reasonably sufficient for practical UUV positioning applications. The capabilities of an optical detector array to determine the pose of a UUV in 3-DOF (x, y and z-axes) are experimentally tested. An experimental platform consisting of a 5 x 5 photodiode array mounted on a hemispherical surface is used to sample the light field emitted from a single light source. Pose detection algorithms are developed to detect pose for steady-state and dynamic cases. Monte Carlo analysis is conducted to assess the pose estimation uncertainty under varying environmental and hardware conditions such as water turbidity, temperature variations in water and electrically-based noise. Monte Carlo analysis results show that the pose uncertainties (within 95% confidence interval) associated with x, y and z-axes are 0.78 m, 0.67 m and 0.56 m, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that x, y and z-axes pose estimates are accurate to within 0.5 m, 0.2 m and 0.2 m, respectively

    Development of Path Following and Cooperative Motion Control Algorithms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    Research on autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is motivating and challenging owing to their specific applications such as defence, mine counter measure, pipeline inspections, risky missions e.g. oceanographic observations, bathymetric surveys, ocean floor analysis, military uses, and recovery of lost man-made objects. Motion control of AUVs is concerned with navigation, path following and co-operative motion control problems. A number of control complexities are encountered in AUV motion control such as nonlinearities in mass matrix, hydrodynamic terms and ocean currents. These pose challenges to develop efficient control algorithms such that the accurate path following task and effective group co-ordination can be achieved in face of parametric uncertainties and disturbances and communication constraints in acoustic medium. This thesis first proposes development of a number of path following control laws and new co-operative motion control algorithms for achieving successful motion control objectives. These algorithms are potential function based proportional derivative path following control laws, adaptive trajectory based formation control, formation control of multiple AUVs steering towards a safety region, mathematical potential function based flocking control and fuzzy potential function based flocking control. Development of a path following control algorithm aims at generating appropriate control law, such that an AUV tracks a predefined desired path. In this thesis first path following control laws are developed for an underactuated (the number of inputs are lesser than the degrees of freedom) AUV. A potential function based proportional derivative (PFPD) control law is derived to govern the motion of the AUV in an obstacle-rich environment (environment populated by obstacles). For obstacle avoidance, a mathematical potential function is exploited, which provides a repulsive force between the AUV and the solid obstacles intersecting the desired path. Simulations were carried out considering a special type of AUV i.e. Omni Directional Intelligent Navigator (ODIN) to study the efficacy of the developed PFPD controller. For achieving more accuracy in the path following performance, a new controller (potential function based augmented proportional derivative, PFAPD) has been designed by the mass matrix augmentation with PFPD control law.     A survey of formation control and motion planning of multiple unmanned vehicles

    The increasing deployment of multiple unmanned vehicles systems has generated large research interest in recent decades. This paper therefore provides a detailed survey to review a range of techniques related to the operation of multi-vehicle systems in different environmental domains, including land based, aerospace and marine with the specific focuses placed on formation control and cooperative motion planning. Differing from other related papers, this paper pays a special attention to the collision avoidance problem and specifically discusses and reviews those methods that adopt flexible formation shape to achieve collision avoidance for multi-vehicle systems. In the conclusions, some open research areas with suggested technologies have been proposed to facilitate the future research development

    Formation-Based Odour Source Localisation Using Distributed Terrestrial and Marine Robotic Systems

    This thesis tackles the problem of robotic odour source localisation, that is, the use of robots to find the source of a chemical release. As the odour travels away from the source, in the form of a plume carried by the wind or current, small scale turbulence causes it to separate into intermittent patches, suppressing any gradients and making this a particularly challenging search problem. We focus on distributed strategies for odour plume tracing in the air and in the water and look primarily at 2D scenarios, although novel results are also presented for 3D tracing. The common thread to our work is the use of multiple robots in formation, each outfitted with odour and flow sensing devices. By having more than one robot, we can gather observations at different locations, thus helping overcome the difficulties posed by the patchiness of the odour concentration. The flow (wind or current) direction is used to orient the formation and move the robots up-flow, while the measured concentrations are used to centre the robots in the plume and scale the formation to trace its limits. We propose two formation keeping methods. For terrestrial and surface robots equipped with relative or absolute positioning capabilities, we employ a graph-based formation controller using the well-known principle of Laplacian feedback. For underwater vehicles lacking such capabilities, we introduce an original controller for a leader-follower triangular formation using acoustic modems with ranging capabilities. The methods we propose underwent extensive experimental evaluation in high-fidelity simulations and real-world trials. The marine formation controller was implemented in MEDUSA autonomous vehicles and found to maintain a stable formation despite the multi-second ranging period. The airborne plume tracing algorithm was tested using compact Khepera robots in a wind tunnel, yielding low distance overheads and reduced tracing error. A combined approach for marine plume tracing was evaluated in simulation with promising results

    Cooperative Swarm Optimisation of Unmanned Surface Vehicles

Extensive operations of USVs having naval, civil and scientific applications are currently being undertaken in various complex marine environments and demands are being placed on them to increase their autonomy and adaptability. A key requirement for the autonomous operation of USVs is to possess a multi-vehicle framework where they can operate as a fleet of vehicles in a practical marine environment with multiple advantages such as surveying of wider areas in less time. From the literature, it is evident that a huge number of studies has been conducted in the area of single USV path planning, guidance and control whilst very few studies have been conducted to understand the implications of the multi vehicle approaches to USVs. This present PhD thesis integrates the modules of efficient optimal path planning, robust path following guidance and cooperative swarm aggregation approach towards development of a new hybrid framework for cooperative navigation of swarm of USVs to enable optimal and autonomous operation in a maritime environment. Initially, an effective and novel optimal path planning approach based on the A* algorithm has been designed taking into account the constraint of a safety distance from the obstacles to avoid the collisions in scenarios of moving obstacles and sea surface currents. This approach is then integrated with a novel virtual target path following guidance module developed for USVs where the reference trajectory from the path planner is fed into the guidance system. The novelty of the current work relies on combining the above mentioned integrated path following guidance system with decentralised swarm aggregation behaviour by means of simple potential based attraction and repulsion functions to maintain the centroid of the swarm of USVs and thereby guiding the swarm of USVs onto a reference path. Finally, an optimal and hybrid framework for cooperative navigation and guidance of fleet of USVs, implementable in practical maritime environments and effective for practical applications at sea is presented.Commonwealth Scholarship Commissio
