Path loss modeling for vehicular system performance and communicaitons protocols evaluation
Vehicular communications are receiving considerable attention due to the introduction of the intelligent transportation system (ITS) concept, enabling smart and intelligent driving technologies and applications. To design, evaluate and optimize ITS applications and services oriented to improve vehicular safety, but also non-safety applications based on wireless systems, the knowledge of the propagation channel is vital. In particular, the mean path loss is one of the most important parameters used in the link budget, being a measure of the channel quality and limiting the maximum allowed distance between the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx). From a narrowband vehicular-to-vehicular (V2V) channel measurement campaign carried out at 5.9 GHz in three different urban environments characterized by high traffic density, this paper analyzes the path loss in terms of the Tx-Rx separation distance and fading statistics. Based on a linear slope model, values for the path loss exponent and the standard deviation of shadowing are reported. We have evaluated the packet error rate (PER) and the maximum achievable Tx-Rx separation distance for a PER threshold level of 10% according to the digital short-range communications (DSRC) specifications. Not All Wireless Sensor Networks Are Created Equal: A Comparative Study On Tunnels
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are envisioned for a number of application scenarios. Nevertheless, the few in-the-field experiences typically focus on the features of a specific system, and rarely report about the characteristics of the target environment, especially w.r.t. the behavior and performance of low-power wireless communication. The TRITon project, funded by our local administration, aims to improve safety and reduce maintenance costs of road tunnels, using a WSN-based control infrastructure. The access to real tunnels within TRITon gives us the opportunity to experimentally assess the peculiarities of this environment, hitherto not investigated in the WSN field. We report about three deployments: i) an operational road tunnel, enabling us to assess the impact of vehicular traffic; ii) a non-operational tunnel, providing insights into analogous scenarios (e.g., underground mines) without vehicles; iii) a vineyard, serving as a baseline representative of the existing literature. Our setup, replicated in each deployment, uses mainstream WSN hardware, and popular MAC and routing protocols. We analyze and compare the deployments w.r.t. reliability, stability, and asymmetry of links, the accuracy of link quality estimators, and the impact of these aspects on MAC and routing layers. Our analysis shows that a number of criteria commonly used in the design of WSN protocols do not hold in tunnels. Therefore, our results are useful for designing networking solutions operating efficiently in similar environments
Time- and Frequency-Varying -Factor of Non-Stationary Vehicular Channels for Safety Relevant Scenarios
Vehicular communication channels are characterized by a non-stationary time-
and frequency-selective fading process due to fast changes in the environment.
We characterize the distribution of the envelope of the first delay bin in
vehicle-to-vehicle channels by means of its Rician -factor. We analyze the
time-frequency variability of this channel parameter using vehicular channel
measurements at 5.6 GHz with a bandwidth of 240 MHz for safety-relevant
scenarios in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). This data enables a
frequency-variability analysis from an IEEE 802.11p system point of view, which
uses 10 MHz channels. We show that the small-scale fading of the envelope of
the first delay bin is Ricean distributed with a varying -factor. The later
delay bins are Rayleigh distributed. We demonstrate that the -factor cannot
be assumed to be constant in time and frequency. The causes of these variations
are the frequency-varying antenna radiation patterns as well as the
time-varying number of active scatterers, and the effects of vegetation. We
also present a simple but accurate bi-modal Gaussian mixture model, that allows
to capture the -factor variability in time for safety-relevant ITS

Fine-Grained vs. Average Reliability for V2V Communications around Intersections
Intersections are critical areas of the transportation infrastructure
associated with 47% of all road accidents. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V)
communication has the potential of preventing up to 35% of such serious road
collisions. In fact, under the 5G/LTE Rel.15+ standardization, V2V is a
critical use-case not only for the purpose of enhancing road safety, but also
for enabling traffic efficiency in modern smart cities. Under this anticipated
5G definition, high reliability of 0.99999 is expected for semi-autonomous
vehicles (i.e., driver-in-the-loop). As a consequence, there is a need to
assess the reliability, especially for accident-prone areas, such as
intersections. We unpack traditional average V2V reliability in order to
quantify its related fine-grained V2V reliability. Contrary to existing work on
infinitely large roads, when we consider finite road segments of significance
to practical real-world deployment, fine-grained reliability exhibits bimodal
behavior. Performance for a certain vehicular traffic scenario is either very
reliable or extremely unreliable, but nowhere in relative proximity to the
