    How to Choose the Relevant MAC Protocol for Wireless Smart Parking Urban Networks?

    Parking sensor network is rapidly deploying around the world and is regarded as one of the first implemented urban services in smart cities. To provide the best network performance, the MAC protocol shall be adaptive enough in order to satisfy the traffic intensity and variation of parking sensors. In this paper, we study the heavy-tailed parking and vacant time models from SmartSantander, and then we apply the traffic model in the simulation with four different kinds of MAC protocols, that is, contention-based, schedule-based and two hybrid versions of them. The result shows that the packet interarrival time is no longer heavy-tailed while collecting a group of parking sensors, and then choosing an appropriate MAC protocol highly depends on the network configuration.     LEDs assisted navigation in connected cars

VLC uses the visible light spectrum to encode and transmit information and is a complement to RF, providing additional bandwidth. Traffic lights are the main infrastructures to control access to roads and will soon be replaced by more efficient structures to improve traffic management. The goal of this dissertation is the characterization and test of communication links based on VLC technology for road management applications. Transmitters of the VLC link are tetrachromatic white LEDs used for illumination and data transmission. The characterization of the optical transmitter system is done through MATLAB simulations, using the Lambertian model. Receivers based on a-SiC:H/a-Si:H photodiodes with selective spectral sensitivity are used to. The studied scenario is a crossroad formed by five cells, with a LED at each corner providing a certain coverage and forming nine footprints. The OOK modulation was used, and the transmitted message follows a 64-bit frame structure. The coverage map and footprint map were obtained as outputs. A calibration curve was used in the encoding and decoding process. Two trajectories were tested: vehicle moving from West to East and from West to North. The encoded process was successful, proving that the simulation tool developed produces valid results. The decoding process was successful with the simulated results but not so much with the signals measured in the laboratory. The red LED/channel presented the least error followed by the green, since these are more distinguishable. The blue and violet LED/channel are less distinguishable and presented the most errors. Adjusting the calibration curve or implementing error detection mechanism are proposed as solutions. A GUI was developed to enable easy interaction between the user and the simulation tool.Devido ao aumento da procura de tráfego e diminuição da banda RF disponível são necessárias tecnologias sem fios alternativas. Os semáforos são as principais infraestruturas de controlo de acesso às estradas e serão eventualmente substituídas por estruturas mais eficiente para melhorar a gestão do trânsito. O objetivo desta dissertação é a caracterização e teste da comunicação utilizando a tecnologia VLC em aplicações de gestão rodoviária. Os transmissores usados para iluminação e comunicação são LEDs tetra-cromáticos. A caracterização do transmissor ótico foi realizada em MATLAB usando o modelo Lambertiano. O recetor utilizado é um foto-detetor baseado em estruturas pin de a-SiC:H e a-Si:H que apresentam sensibilidade espectral seletiva. O cenário estudado é um cruzamento formado por cinco células, com um LED em cada canto, proporcionando uma cobertura específica e formando em conjunto nove footprints. Foi usada a modulação OOK e a mensagem enviada utiliza uma estrutura de 64 bits. Como resultados, foram obtidos mapas de cobertura e de footprints. A curva de calibração foi usada para o processo de codificação e descodificação. Foram testadas duas trajetórias: veículos provenientes de Oeste para Este e de Oeste para Norte. O processo de codificação foi bem-sucedido, mostrando que a ferramenta de simulação desenvolvida produz resultados válidos. O processo de descodificação foi bem-sucedido para os resultados simulados, mas apresenta erros para as medidas laboratoriais. O LED/canal vermelho apresentou menos erros, seguido do verde pois estes são mais distinguíveis. O azul e o violeta são menos distinguíveis, apresentando mais erros. As soluções propostas são ajustar a curva de calibração ou implementar de mecanismos de deteção de erros.     Extending TDL based non-WSSUS vehicle-to-everything channel model

    In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten haben drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme eine rasante Entwicklung durchgemacht und es wurden viele Untersuchungen durchgeführt, seit Maxwell die Existenz von elektromagnetischer Wellen vorausgesagt hat. In den letzten Jahren hat die Forschung im Bereich der vehicle to X (V2X)-Kommunikation stetig zugenommen. V2X beschreibt die Fähigkeit, Daten zwischen einem Fahrzeug oder vehicle (V) und “allem” zu übertragen. In Zukunft könnten Fahrzeuge mit ihrer Umgebung kommunizieren, um Verkehrsunfälle zu vermeiden und Staus zu verringern. Dazu werden sie ihr Geschwindigkeits- und Positionsdaten über Ad-hoc-Fahrzeugnetze senden und empfangen können. Um die Verkehrssicherheit zu erhöhen, ist eine zuverlässige Kommunikationsverbindung notwendig. Die größte Herausforderung bei der Fahrzeugkommunikation besteht darin, dass sich die Eigenschaften des Physical Layers aufgrund der inhärenten Mobilität innerhalb des Kanals, der hohen Fahrzeuggeschwindigkeiten, der unterschiedlichen Antennenpositionen und der vielen Handover aufgrund kleinerer Zellen schnell ändern. Dies bringt eine Reihe von Herausforderungen in Bezug auf die Kanalcharakterisierung mit sich. Es handelt sich um einen Kanal mit starker Zeitvarianz und es treten viele Übergänge auf. Somit handelt es sich um einen nicht-stationärer (non-stationary) Kanal. Das Hauptziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, eine Methode zu finden, mit der der Kanal einer komplexen Umgebung in einer einfachen Form mit weniger strengen Beziehungen zur Geometrie dargestellt werden kann. Dabei werden die statistischen Eigenschaften ähnlich der Messdaten beibehalten. In dieser Arbeit werden nichtstationäre tapped delay line (TDL)-Modelle verwendet, um vehicle to infrastructure (V2I)-Kanäle zu beschreiben. Es wird eine neue Strategie zur Extraktion von TDL-Kanalmodellparametern aus Messdaten vorgeschlagen. Dieser Ansatz basiert auf einer bestehenden Methode zur Ableitung von Parametern für ein TDLModell. Es wird gezeigt, dass mit einer anderen Methode zur Auswahl der Taps die Anzahl der Abgriffe, die zur Rekonstruktion der root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) eines Kanals erforderlich sind, erheblich reduziert werden kann. Ein neuer Ansatz zur überprüfen der Korrektheit der Ableitung der Kanalmodellparameter wird aufgezeigt. Die Durchführbarkeit der Methode wird anhand von Channel Sounding Messungen bestätigt. In dieser Dissertation wird ein Generator zur Erzeugung von Kanalimpulsantworten entwickelt und das nichtstationäre Verhalten der Kanäle durch die Verwendung eines ON/OFF-Prozesses beschrieben. Es werden Markov-Ketten unterschiedlicher Ordnung modelliert, um das nicht-stationäre Verhalten besser zu erfassen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass Markov-Ketten erster Ordnung mit zwei Zuständen vorzuziehen sind, um das häufige ON/OFF-Verhalten von Mehrwegpfaden darzustellen, und dass die Markov-Modelle zweiter und dritter Ordnung keine großen Auswirkungen haben. Eine Methode zur Erweiterung eines single input single output (SISO)-TDL-Modells auf multiple input multiple output (MIMO) unter der non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS)-Annahme wird eingeführt, um TDL-Kanalmodelle für V2I MIMO-Systeme zu entwickeln. Die Analyse bewertet die SISO- mit der MIMO-Konfiguration in Bezug auf die Kanalkapazität. Es werden verschiedene MIMO-Konfigurationen untersucht, und es wird gezeigt, dass die Position der Antennen eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Die Verwendung von nur vier Antennen am transmitter (Tx) und receiver (Rx), die in unterschiedliche Richtungen abstrahlen, führt zu einem qualitativen Sprung in der Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems.In the past decades, wireless communication systems have undergone rapid development, and many investigations have been done since Maxwell predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves. In recent years, vehicle to X (V2X) communication research has been growing steadily. V2X describes the ability to transmit data between a vehicle (V) and “everything”. In the future, vehicles might be able to communicate with their environment to prevent traffic accidents and reduce congestion by allowing vehicles to transmit and receive data through a vehicular ad hoc network at their speed and position. In order to achieve the ultimate goal of enhancing transportation safety, it is crucial to establish reliable communication links. The main challenge of vehicular communications introduces new properties because the physical layer properties are rapidly changing due to inherent mobility within the channel, high vehicle speeds, varying antenna positions, and many handovers due to smaller cells. This brings up a number of challenges in terms of channel characterization because it is a strong time-variant channel and many transitions occur; therefore, it is a non-stationary channel. In this thesis, non-stationary tapped delay line (TDL) models are used to describe the vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) channels. This thesis proposes a new strategy to extract TDL channel model parameters from measurement data. The proposed approach is based on an existing method to derive parameters for a TDL model. It will be shown that with a different method of choosing taps, the number of taps necessary to regenerate the root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) of a channel can be significantly reduced. An approach is proposed to verify the correctness of the channel model parameters derivation. The feasibility of the method will be confirmed using channel-sounding measurements. This dissertation devises a generator to produce channel impulse responses (CIRs) and describes the non-stationary behavior of the channels via employing an ON/OFF process. Different order Markov chains are modeled with the aim of better capturing the non-stationary behavior. The investigation shows that first-order two-state Markov chains are preferable to represent multipath’s frequent ON/OFF behavior, and the second- and third-order Markov models do not make enormous effects. A method for extending a single input single output (SISO)-TDL model to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) under non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS) assumption is introduced to develop TDL channel models for the V2I MIMO systems. The analysis evaluates SISO- with MIMO configuration in terms of channel capacity. Different MIMO configurations are explored, and it will be illustrated that the position of antennas plays an important role. Using only four antennas at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) that radiate towards different directions will make a qualitative leap in the performance of the system

    An enhanced approach to virtually increase quasi-stationarity regions within geometric channel models for vehicular communications

    Vehicular communication channels are intrinsically non-stationary, as they present high mobility and abundant dynamic scatterers. Quasi-stationary regions can assess the degree of non-stationarity within a determined scenario and time variant observation of the channel can be extracted. These regions can aid geometrical models as to increase channel sampling intervals or to develop hybrid stochastic-geometric channel models. In this work, a new methodology for the use of virtual quasi-stationary regions within geometric channel models is proposed, in order to leverage the inherent location information to virtually increase their size.     Stationarity analysis of V2I radio channel in a suburban environment

    Due to rapid changes in the environment, vehicular communication channels no longer satisfy the assumption of wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering. The non-stationary fading process can be characterized by assuming local stationarity regionswith finite extent in time and frequency. The local scattering function (LSF) and channel correlation function (CCF) provide a framework to characterize the mean power and correlation of the non-stationary channel scatterers, respectively. In this paper, we estimate the LSF and CCF from measurements collected in a vehicle-to-infrastructure radio channel sounding campaign in a suburban environment in Lille, France. Based on the CCF, the stationarity region is evaluated in time as 567 ms and used to capture the non-stationary fading parameters. We obtain the time-varying delay and Doppler power profiles fromthe LSF, and we analyze the corresponding root-mean-square delay and Doppler spreads. We show that the distribution of these parameters follows a lognormal model. Finally, application relevance in terms of channel capacity and diversity techniques is discussed. Results show that the assumption of ergodic capacity and the performance of various diversity techniques depend on the stationarity and coherence parameters of the channel. The evaluation and statistical modeling of such parameters can provide away of tracking channel variation, hence, increasing the performance of adaptive schemes

    Multi-Camera View Based Proactive BS Selection and Beam Switching for V2X

    Due to the short wavelength and large attenuation of millimeter-wave (mmWave), mmWave BSs are densely distributed and require beamforming with high directivity. When the user moves out of the coverage of the current BS or is severely blocked, the mmWave BS must be switched to ensure the communication quality. In this paper, we proposed a multi-camera view based proactive BS selection and beam switching that can predict the optimal BS of the user in the future frame and switch the corresponding beam pair. Specifically, we extract the features of multi-camera view images and a small part of channel state information (CSI) in historical frames, and dynamically adjust the weight of each modality feature. Then we design a multi-task learning module to guide the network to better understand the main task, thereby enhancing the accuracy and the robustness of BS selection and beam switching. Using the outputs of all tasks, a prior knowledge based fine tuning network is designed to further increase the BS switching accuracy. After the optimal BS is obtained, a beam pair switching network is proposed to directly predict the optimal beam pair of the corresponding BS. Simulation results in an outdoor intersection environment show the superior performance of our proposed solution under several metrics such as predicting accuracy, achievable rate, harmonic mean of precision and recall

    Performance Comparison of Contention- and Schedule-based MAC Protocols in Urban Parking Sensor Networks

    Network traffic model is a critical problem for urban applications, mainly because of its diversity and node density. As wireless sensor network is highly concerned with the development of smart cities, careful consideration to traffic model helps choose appropriate protocols and adapt network parameters to reach best performances on energy-latency tradeoffs. In this paper, we compare the performance of two off-the-shelf medium access control protocols on two different kinds of traffic models, and then evaluate their application-end information delay and energy consumption while varying traffic parameters and network density. From the simulation results, we highlight some limits induced by network density and occurrence frequency of event-driven applications. When it comes to realtime urban services, a protocol selection shall be taken into account - even dynamically - with a special attention to energy-delay tradeoff.     Intelligent Traffic Monitoring System Using Vehicular Ad Hoc Network

    The growing significance of road safety and human engagement in transport has emerged as a matter of national concern, exerting a profound impact on the lives of individuals.. Many road accidents and crashes failed to ensure human life safety. As a result, the traffic management system must maintain the balance in accordance with the maximum road limits. Vehicles with sensors and automated self-driving capabilities are now available, such as Tesla and others. The proposed system is based on a technique known as Intervention linear minimum spanning tree (ILMST), which employs a topology with lengths that are proportionally equal. When using dynamic topology, there is packet loss during a change of location or a continuous update in networking via vehicle movement from one location to another. In this manner, each node computes the weighted nodes with a number of partitions in order to provide a linear time update. This reduces the number of connected edges in the graph that are repeated. When the size of the repeated graphs that relate the GPS route from the maps is reduced, traffic updates avoid recursion and provide the best routes for customers. Traffic congestion overhead can be reduced by implementing the proposed methodology. It is possible to avoid it where there are traffic signals and all other sensor-based wireless devices in a vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). The safety measures are also a necessary step based on the communications in routing and other protocols. The system, when combined with a neural network-based positioning system (NNPS) with various perceptrons, can maintain vehicle speed and categorize safety threats such as group classification. A solution can be found by repairing the DDoS attack based on the results of the various aspects that provide output for malicious monitoring

    Medium access control protocol for visible light communication in vehicular communication networks

    Recent achievements in the automotive industry related to lighting apparatuses include the use of LED or laser technology to illuminate the vehicle environment. This advancement resulted in greater energy efficiency and increased safety with selective illumination segments. A secondary effect was creating a new field for researchers in which they can utilize LED fast modulation using the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. Using LED to encode and transmit data is a relatively new and innovative concept. On the other field, there have been advancements in vehicular communication using radio frequency at 2.4 or 5GHz. This research focuses mainly on a field in which visible light augments or replaces radio frequency communication between vehicles. This research also investigates the effect of asymmetry on network performance using Visible Light Communication (VLC) in vehicular networks. Different types of asymmetry were defined and tested in real-world simulation experiments. Research results showed that asymmetry has a negative influence on network performance, though that effect is not significant. The main focus of the research is to develop a lightweight and new Media Access Control (MAC) protocol for VLC in vehicular networks. To develop a MAC protocol for VLC, special software was developed on top of the existing Network Simulation Environment (NSE). A new VLC MAC protocol for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) was benchmarked using a defined set of metrics. The benchmark was conducted as a set of designed simulation experiments against the referent IEEE 802.11b MAC protocol. Both protocols used a newly defined VLC-equipped vehicle model. Each simulation experiment depicted a specific network and traffic situation. The total number of scenarios was eleven. The last set of simulations was conducted in realworld scenarios on the virtual streets of Suffolk, VA, USA. Using defined metrics, the test showed that the new VLC MAC protocol for V2V is better than the referent protocol.Nedavna dostignuća u automobilskoj industriji koja se tiču opreme za osvjetljivanje uključuju korištenje LED ili laserskih rasvjetnih tijela za osvjetljivanje okoline. Ovime se postižu uštede u potrošnji energije kao i povećana sigurnost u prometu. LED rasvjeta je uniformnija od običnih žarulja tako da osvjetljenje bude ravnomjernije i preciznije. Obzirom da su LED selektivne moguće je odabrati segment ceste koji se želi osvijetliti. Upravo ta fleksibilnost LED otvara novi prostor za istraživače gdje mogu koristiti PWM signal za modulaciju podataka. PWM je poseban signal koji ima varijabilnu širinu pulsa na izlazu. Istraživači i znanstvenici mogu koristiti LED za kodiranje i prijenos podataka između automobila. Prednosti korištenja komunikacije u vidljivom dijelu elektro-magnetskog spektra (eng.VLC) je u činjenici da taj segment nije zaštićen licencama te je otvoren za slobodno korištenje. Osim toga, vidljivo, neintenzivno svjetlo nema biološki negativnih posljedica. Kod korištenja PWM signala za modulaciju, postojeći izlaz svjetla i njegova funkcija (osvjetljivanja ceste) nisu narušeni. Ljudsko oko ne može detektirati oscilacije tako visoke frekvencije (oko 5 kHz) S druge strane, komponente koje mogu primiti poslani signal su foto diode ili kamere. Kamere su već prisutne na modernom vozilu u obliku prednje kamere ili stražnje kamere za pomoć pri parkiranju. U svakom slučaju, tehnologija je već prisutna na modernom vozilu. Na drugom području, znanstvenici rade na komunikaciji između vozila koristeći radio valove niže frekvencije 2.4 ili 5 GHz. Komunikacija između automobila je predmet standardizacije i mnoge zemlje već propisuju pravila za obaveznu ugradnju opreme za takav oblik komunikacije. Prednost takvog koncepta je razmjena podatka; od onih za zabavu pa do kritičnih i sigurnosnih podataka npr. informacija o nadolazećem mjestu gdje se dogodila prometna nesreća. Ovo istraživanje se fokusira na proširenje ili zamjenu radio komunikacije sa komunikacijom koristeći vidljivi dio spektra (npr. LED i kamere). Jedan od glavnih nedostataka takvog koncepta je ne postojanje adekvatnog i specijaliziranog protokola za kontrolu pristupa mediju (eng. MAC). Drugi problem je nepoznati efekt asimetrije u VLC komunikaciji na performanse mrežne komunikacija. Ovo istraživanje je prepoznalo i klasificiralo različite tipove asimetrije. Svaki tip je testiran u sklopu simulacijskog eksperimenta u stvarnim scenarijima. Pokazalo se je da asimetrija negativno utječe na mrežne performanse, međutim taj efekt nije značajan jer uzrokuje manje od 0.5 % neuspješno poslanih poruka. Glavni fokus istraživanja je razvoj novog i pojednostavljenog MAC protokola za VLC komunikaciju između automobila. Kako bi se razvio novi MAC protokol nad VLC tehnologijom u prometnim mrežama, bilo je nužno napraviti i novu razvojnu okolinu koja se bazira na postojećim mrežnim simulatorima. Novi VLCMAC protokol za komunikaciju između automobila je testiran koristeći definirani set metrika. Testovi su napravljeni u obliku simulacijskih eksperimenata u kojima su uspored¯ivane performanse novog i referentnog protokola. Referentni protokol, u ovom istraživanju je IEEE 802.11b MAC protokol. U sklopu ovog rada definiran je i model vozila opremljen VLC tehnologijom. U simulacijskim eksperimentima je korišten isti model vozila za oba protokola. Za potrebe istraživanja je definirano jedanaest simulacijskih eksperimenata, svaki od njih opisuje specifične situacije u mrežnim komunikacijama kao i u prometu. Završni simulacijski scenariji uključuju okolinu iz stvarnosti, mreža ulica grada Suffolka, SAD. Osim stvarnih ulica, vozila su se kretala i razmjenjivala podatke koristeći mrežnu komunikaciju na kompletnom ISO/OSI mrežnom stogu sa zamijenjenim MAC podslojem. Razvojna okolina uključuje preciznu provjeru fizičkih karakteristika na razini putanje zrake svjetlosti. Ova preciznost je bila nužna kako bi simulacije bile što vjerodostojnije stvarnim sustavima. Obzirom da se radi o mnogo kalkulacija, obično računalo nije dostatno za izvođenje simulacijskih eksperimenata; zbog toga su se eksperimenti izvodili na klasteru računala Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Koristeći definirane metrike, istraživanje je pokazalo kako je novi VLC MAC protokol za komunikaciju između automobila bolji od referentnog protokola.
