Cinema and Transcendence. Xavier Beauvois and Terrence Malick: Two Attempts at Revelation

    Get PDF
In Des Hommes et des Dieuxand The Tree of Life, both Xavier Beauvois and Terrence Malick are concerned with values that from the beginning of time to our day have set the human heart wondering and speculating. These issues are brought to their respective films in a distinctive style, which, however, may be closely associated with a common trait in both directors –creative imagination and zest to make the most out of the art of cinema. Their skillful exploration of filmic devices, their invitation to other artistic expressions, namely music and painting, to figure in their films in a signifying role, is tentatively accounted for in this essay, in order to show how a visual narrative, in the case of Beauvois, and an ever-flowing succession of images, in the case of Malick, may contribute to illustrate unsuspected structural and thematic affinities, their remarkable differences notwithstanding.

Planetary Praxes: Performing Humanity under Ecological Emergency

    Get PDF
“Planetary Praxes” theorizes new forms of human/nonhuman relationships developing in response to the rapidly increasing disruption of known and lived environmental norms. Through the interdisciplinary lens of performance, I theorize the planetary as a rubric for analyzing this shift, as it emphasizes the nonhuman and the earth’s inherent alterity. This intervention derives from two conceptual shifts: the material conditions of the ecological emergency which foreground the connections among humans and planetary others, and the theorization of the Anthropocene, which emphasizes the geological power of the human species. Both produce “planetary imaginaries” best rendered through performance. Further, I argue that the ecological changes under the label “climate change” demands considerations of the planetary in order to imagine alternative environmental futures. I examine a variety of practices—political protest, museum exhibition, and artistic production—which I argue have become sites for negotiating ecological relationships. I ask how these relationships form under the conditions of planetary emergency, including global warming, environmental racism, ocean acidification, the inequities of global capitalism, and biodiversity loss. These rapidly shifting ecological (and political) circumstances rework an extensive history of articulating humanity in relation (or in opposition) to nature. Ultimately, I argue that identifying and understanding these emerging ways of being, which I call planetary praxes, are imperative to forge a future of ecological justice. I show how a range of planetary praxes—ways of being human—are developing during this current time of environmental upheaval. These include practices that uphold Eurocentric ways of being that perpetuate human exceptionalism and the instrumentalization of nature, as well as performance practices that can enable new ways of living by creating new relations between humans and nonhumans, displacing the centrality of humanity, and imagining new relationships to nature. This project demonstrates the significance of performance as a lens to understand how we move through the world. By attending to the ways humanity is a praxis—a doing, a performance—we might move toward those forms which are less violent and more just

Sawt, Bodies, Species. Sonic Pluralism in Morocco.

In Sawt, Bodies, Species, Gilles Aubry offers an account on sound and listening in Morocco across a wide domain of activities, including musical and artistic expression, sound archives, urban planning, building techniques, seismology, healing practices, industrial extractivism, and ecology. Sawt in Arabic literally means sound and voice. Sound in Morocco thus intimately relates to the body; it never quite corresponds with its modern Western counterpart as a phenomenon separable from the other senses. Sonic pluralism recapitulates Aubry's attempts to think sound and aurality together with modernity and (de-)coloniality. The transformative power of sonic pluralism is expressed in people's acts of listen- ing and sounding, aimed at questioning and shifting social conventions. On the level of ecology, sonic pluralism reveals extra-human agencies that mediate between people and their environment. Drawing on critical Sound Studies, ethnographic research, and artistic practice, Aubry's dense descriptions are complemented by audiovisual essays created in collaboration with local musicians, artists, and scientists

Home Schooling: A Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers

    Get PDF
Home schooling was researched for the purpose of determining how many students are home schooled, the rules and regulations regarding home schooling, and the effectiveness of home schooling. A resource guide has been developed for home schooling parents and teachers dealing with home schoolers. Many of the resources are geographically specific to the Yakima Valley, but most can be used or adapted for a variety of age and maturity levels. The guide is divided into three topics: Public Resources, Private Resources, and Community Resources
