Differential-Algebraic Equations and Beyond: From Smooth to Nonsmooth Constrained Dynamical Systems
The present article presents a summarizing view at differential-algebraic
equations (DAEs) and analyzes how new application fields and corresponding
mathematical models lead to innovations both in theory and in numerical
analysis for this problem class. Recent numerical methods for nonsmooth
dynamical systems subject to unilateral contact and friction illustrate the

A sequential semidefinite programming method and an application in passive reduced-order modeling
We consider the solution of nonlinear programs with nonlinear
semidefiniteness constraints. The need for an efficient exploitation of the
cone of positive semidefinite matrices makes the solution of such nonlinear
semidefinite programs more complicated than the solution of standard nonlinear
programs. In particular, a suitable symmetrization procedure needs to be chosen
for the linearization of the complementarity condition. The choice of the
symmetrization procedure can be shifted in a very natural way to certain linear
semidefinite subproblems, and can thus be reduced to a well-studied problem.
The resulting sequential semidefinite programming (SSP) method is a
generalization of the well-known SQP method for standard nonlinear programs. We
present a sensitivity result for nonlinear semidefinite programs, and then
based on this result, we give a self-contained proof of local quadratic
convergence of the SSP method. We also describe a class of nonlinear
semidefinite programs that arise in passive reduced-order modeling, and we
report results of some numerical experiments with the SSP method applied to
problems in that class
On the local stability of semidefinite relaxations
We consider a parametric family of quadratically constrained quadratic
programs (QCQP) and their associated semidefinite programming (SDP)
relaxations. Given a nominal value of the parameter at which the SDP relaxation
is exact, we study conditions (and quantitative bounds) under which the
relaxation will continue to be exact as the parameter moves in a neighborhood
around the nominal value. Our framework captures a wide array of statistical
estimation problems including tensor principal component analysis, rotation
synchronization, orthogonal Procrustes, camera triangulation and resectioning,
essential matrix estimation, system identification, and approximate GCD. Our
results can also be used to analyze the stability of SOS relaxations of general

Forward-backward truncated Newton methods for convex composite optimization
This paper proposes two proximal Newton-CG methods for convex nonsmooth
optimization problems in composite form. The algorithms are based on a a
reformulation of the original nonsmooth problem as the unconstrained
minimization of a continuously differentiable function, namely the
forward-backward envelope (FBE). The first algorithm is based on a standard
line search strategy, whereas the second one combines the global efficiency
estimates of the corresponding first-order methods, while achieving fast
asymptotic convergence rates. Furthermore, they are computationally attractive
since each Newton iteration requires the approximate solution of a linear
system of usually small dimension
