Dmarc: A Framework For The Integration Of Dmaic And Dmadv
The Lean Six Sigma methodology is being applied extensively to tackle many quality related issues in many processes of today s industries. Various companies have benefited greatly from the adoption of Six Sigma and Lean engineering concepts since their introduction, and continue to do so. The DMAIC method that is traditionally adopted in the implementation of the Lean Six Sigma methodology has proven to yield cost saving results in most cases. Yet, industries have found that just improvement of existent process and products to reduce defects, does not quench the customer s growing thirst for greater quality. In order to tackle variation and defects pro actively, the initiative to achieve Six Sigma level of quality (3.4 DPMO) or greater is being infused into the design of new products using the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology, through systematic approaches such as DMADV. This research integrates the DMADV approach into the classic DMAIC methodology through a framework, DMARC, which details the improvement an existing process through re design. It provides a systematic approach to avoid the mis direction of projects into following the path of continued improvement of existing processes that are deemed to be beyond such efforts. A real life industrial case: a successfully completed Lean Six Sigma project, tackling the downtime of the Launch Pad Meteorological System at Launch Pads 39A and B at the Kennedy Space Center, was studied to exemplify the possibility of the achievement of greater results from the implementation of the DMARC framework
Integrated design under uncertainty for pharmaceutical processes
in pharmaceutical process development there is frequently a large element of process uncertainty since
knowledge of the mechanisms of production and separation is often limited. The overall objective of this
thesis is the development of a general methodology which combines process modelling with uncertainty
techniques to support the process development of complete integrated sequences. In a structured approach
the uncertainty can be managed and improved process performance may be obtained.
The major concept of this work is the integration of stochastic methods into a general framework for batch
and continuous process models, consisting of two main parts. The first combines systematic modelling
procedures with Hammersley sampling based Uncertainty Analysis and a range of sample-based
Sensitivity Analysis techniques, used to quantify predicted performance uncertainty and identify key
uncertainty contributions. In the second, a stochastic optimisation approach is employed to solve different
problems under uncertainty. The methodology was implemented on two case studies.
The first study investigated a batch reactor process. Some undesirable performance characteristics were
observed when the published nominal optimal isothermal operating policy was implemented in the
uncertain system. It was found that a robust operating policy significantly improved the total process time
characteristic but not the impurity content and an alternative non-isothermal policy strategy would be a
better option. The second study investigated a complete process sequence. As models developed with
incoming data, uncertainty in the reaction and crystallisation parameters were critical to the endpoint
quality criteria. Expected performance was improved by considering the propagation of uncertainty in the
complete process. Four different flowsheets were compared, considering profitability and control
tolerance criteria under uncertainty.
The case study results indicate the importance in considering uncertainty systematically and quantitatively
when conventional modelling techniques are employed. The methodology showed the opportunity to
improve process performance potential and provide more realistic information to support pharmaceutical
process development

Contextually and identity aware 5G services
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThe fifth generation (5G) mobile networks aim to be ten times faster than the existing 4G connection, whilst providing low latency, and flexibility. Hence, various alterations are planned to the existing network infrastructure to be able to reach the 5G expected performance levels. The main technologies that were used, to ensure high performance, flexible network, and efficient resource allocation, are Software Defined Network and Network Function Virtualization. As these technologies are replacing the device-based architecture with, a service-based architecture.
This thesis provides a design of location database interactive web interface and interactive mobile application. The implementation of real time video streaming location server, the streaming system's performance parameters demonstrated a high level of QoS (0.07ms jitter and 9.53ms delay). In regard to experimental examination, it measured the localisation coverage, accuracy measurements and a highly scalable security solution. The localisation coverage and accuracy measurements were achieved through the mmWave and VLC link transmitters. The proposed simulated annealing algorithm aimed at data optimisation for location measurements accuracy showed results of the average location error of x and y which showed significant improvement from x= 22.5 and y=21.6 to x=11.09 and y= 11.63.
The proposed indoor location security solution showed significant results, as it provides a high scalability solution using the VNF. The solution showed that it was not 100% effective, as some of the fake discover packets still reached the DHCP server. This was due to the high load of traffic passing through the network. Nonetheless, 90% of the fake DHCP discover packets never reached the DHCP server because the scripts began blocking all fake discover packets after realising it was an attack. This conveys that the proposed system was able to run successfully without crashing or overloading the controller.
Overall, the main challenges facing 5G have been addressed with their proposed solutions, which showed promising results. Conclusively showing that there is a lot more space for technological advancements to support the future of mobile networks.European Union’s Horizon 2020 research program - the Internet of Radio-Light (IoRL) project H2020-ICT 761992

Evaluation of railway performance through quality of service
Railways worldwide have experienced unprecedented growth over the last decade. The infrastructure of many European railways is becoming increasingly saturated, while the operators face strong demands to increase services and carry more passengers and freight. There has been a high demand for performance improvement, to provide better service to customers. This problem is drawing increasing attention from many parties within and beyond the railway industry.
In this research, the author first reviewed and analysed the existing performance measures used in railway transportation. A new generic framework for the measurement and improvement of railway network performance has been proposed, based on the concept of quality of service. The key factors affecting quality of service are identified and analysed.
Secondly, the quantification of performance has been identified based on the Quality of Service framework. Multi criteria decision making has been applied to determine the weights of each Key Performance Indicator in the framework.
Finally, factors within the railway system have been analysed for their impact on performance with a sensitivity analysis, to support the development of performance improvement plans. A case study has been conveyed to show the influence of the system properties on the performance measured by quality of service
