    Advanced Timing and Synchronization Methodologies for Digital VLSI Integrated Circuits

    This dissertation addresses timing and synchronization methodologies that are critical to the design, analysis and optimization of high-performance, integrated digital VLSI systems. As process sizes shrink and design complexities increase, achieving timing closure for digital VLSI circuits becomes a significant bottleneck in the integrated circuit design flow. Circuit designers are motivated to investigate and employ alternative methods to satisfy the timing and physical design performance targets. Such novel methods for the timing and synchronization of complex circuitry are developed in this dissertation and analyzed for performance and applicability.Mainstream integrated circuit design flow is normally tuned for zero clock skew, edge-triggered circuit design. Non-zero clock skew or multi-phase clock synchronization is seldom used because the lack of design automation tools increases the length and cost of the design cycle. For similar reasons, level-sensitive registers have not become an industry standard despite their superior size, speed and power consumption characteristics compared to conventional edge-triggered flip-flops.In this dissertation, novel design and analysis techniques that fully automate the design and analysis of non-zero clock skew circuits are presented. Clock skew scheduling of both edge-triggered and level-sensitive circuits are investigated in order to exploit maximum circuit performances. The effects of multi-phase clocking on non-zero clock skew, level-sensitive circuits are investigated leading to advanced synchronization methodologies. Improvements in the scalability of the computational timing analysis process with clock skew scheduling are explored through partitioning and parallelization.The integration of the proposed design and analysis methods to the physical design flow of integrated circuits synchronized with a next-generation clocking technology-resonant rotary clocking technology-is also presented. Based on the design and analysis methods presented in this dissertation, a computer-aided design tool for the design of rotary clock synchronized integrated circuits is developed

    Linearization of The Timing Analysis and Optimization of Level-Sensitive Circuits

    This thesis describes a linear programming (LP) formulation applicable to the static timing analysis of large scale synchronous circuits with level-sensitive latches. The automatic timing analysis procedure presented here is composed of deriving the connectivity information, constructing the LP model and solving the clock period minimization problem of synchronous digital VLSI circuits. In synchronous circuits with level-sensitive latches, operation at a reduced clock period (higher clock frequency) is possible by takingadvantage of both non-zero clock skew scheduling and time borrowing. Clock skew schedulingis performed in order to exploit the benefits of nonidentical clock signal delays on circuit timing. The time borrowing property of level-sensitive circuits permits higher operating frequencies compared to edge-sensitivecircuits. Considering time borrowing in the timing analysis, however, introduces non-linearity in this timing analysis. The modified big M (MBM) method is defined in order to transform the non-linear constraints arising in the problem formulation into solvable linear constraints. Equivalent LP model problemsfor single-phase clock synchronization of the ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits are generated and these problems are solved by the industrial LP solver CPLEX. Through the simultaneous application of time borrowing and clock skew scheduling, up to 63% improvements are demonstrated in minimum clock period with respect to zero-skew edge-sensitive synchronous circuits. The timing constraints governing thelevel-sensitive synchronous circuit operation not only solve the clock period minimization problem but also provide a common framework for the general timing analysis of such circuits. The inclusion of additional constraints into the problem formulation in order to meet the timing requirements imposed by specific applicationenvironments is discussed

    Design of robust asynchronous reconfigurable controllers for parallel synchronization using embedded graphs

As the number of operating points under consideration increases, specifications which are capable of altering key parameters such as the time available for synchronization and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) in response to input from the user/system become desirable. This thesis explores how a combination of parallelism and scheduling, referred to as wagging, can be utilized to construct schedulers for synchronizer designs which are capable of pooling the gain-bandwidth products of their composite devices, in order to satisfy this requirement. In this work, we explore the ways in which the areas of graph theory and reconfigurable hardware design can be applied to generate both combinational and sequential scheduler designs, which satisfy the behavior requirement above. Further to this point, this work illustrates that such a scheduler is primarily comprised of an interrupt subsystem, and a reconfigurable token ring. This thesis explores how both of these components can be controlled in absence of a clock signal, as well as the design challenges inherent to each part. The final noteworthy issue in this study is with regard to the flow control of data in a parallel synchronizer that incorporates a First-In First-Out (FIFO) buffer to decouple the reading and writing operations from each other. Such a structure incurs penalties if the data rates on both sides are not well matched. This work presents a method by which combinations of serial and parallel reading operations are used to minimize this mismatch

    The Cost of Application-Class Processing: Energy and Performance Analysis of a Linux-Ready 1.7-GHz 64-Bit RISC-V Core in 22-nm FDSOI Technology

    The open-source RISC-V instruction set architecture (ISA) is gaining traction, both in industry and academia. The ISA is designed to scale from microcontrollers to server-class processors. Furthermore, openness promotes the availability of various open-source and commercial implementations. Our main contribution in this paper is a thorough power, performance, and efficiency analysis of the RISC-V ISA targeting baseline "application class" functionality, i.e., supporting the Linux OS and its application environment based on our open-source single-issue in-order implementation of the 64-bit ISA variant (RV64GC) called Ariane. Our analysis is based on a detailed power and efficiency analysis of the RISC-V ISA extracted from silicon measurements and calibrated simulation of an Ariane instance (RV64IMC) taped-out in GlobalFoundries 22FDX technology. Ariane runs at up to 1.7-GHz, achieves up to 40-Gop/sW energy efficiency, which is superior to similar cores presented in the literature. We provide insight into the interplay between functionality required for the application-class execution (e.g., virtual memory, caches, and multiple modes of privileged operation) and energy cost. We also compare Ariane with RISCY, a simpler and a slower microcontroller-class core. Our analysis confirms that supporting application-class execution implies a nonnegligible energy-efficiency loss and that compute performance is more cost-effectively boosted by instruction extensions (e.g., packed SIMD) rather than the high-frequency operation

    Low Power Digital Filter Implementation in FPGA

    Digital filters suitable for hearing aid application on low power perspective have been developed and implemented in FPGA in this dissertation. Hearing aids are primarily meant for improving hearing and speech comprehensions. Digital hearing aids score over their analog counterparts. This happens as digital hearing aids provide flexible gain besides facilitating feedback reduction and noise elimination. Recent advances in DSP and Microelectronics have led to the development of superior digital hearing aids. Many researchers have investigated several algorithms suitable for hearing aid application that demands low noise, feedback cancellation, echo cancellation, etc., however the toughest challenge is the implementation. Furthermore, the additional constraints are power and area. The device must consume as minimum power as possible to support extended battery life and should be as small as possible for increased portability. In this thesis we have made an attempt to investigate possible digital filter algorithms those are hardware configurable on low power view point. Suitability of decimation filter for hearing aid application is investigated. In this dissertation decimation filter is implemented using ‘Distributed Arithmetic’ approach.While designing this filter, it is observed that, comb-half band FIR-FIR filter design uses less hardware compared to the comb-FIR-FIR filter design. The power consumption is also less in case of comb-half band FIR-FIR filter design compared to the comb-FIR-FIR filter. This filter is implemented in Virtex-II pro board from Xilinx and the resource estimator from the system generator is used to estimate the resources. However ‘Distributed Arithmetic’ is highly serial in nature and its latency is high; power consumption found is not very low in this type of filter implementation. So we have proceeded for ‘Adaptive Hearing Aid’ using Booth-Wallace tree multiplier. This algorithm is also implemented in FPGA and power calculation of the whole system is done using Xilinx Xpower analyser. It is observed that power consumed by the hearing aid with Booth-Wallace tree multiplier is less than the hearing aid using Booth multiplier (about 25%). So we can conclude that the hearing aid using Booth-Wallace tree multiplier consumes less power comparatively. The above two approached are purely algorithmic approach. Next we proceed to combine circuit level VLSI design and with algorithmic approach for further possible reduction in power. A MAC based FDF-FIR filter (algorithm) that uses dual edge triggered latch (DET) (circuit) is used for hearing aid device. It is observed that DET based MAC FIR filter consumes less power than the traditional (single edge triggered, SET) one (about 41%). The proposed low power latch provides a power saving upto 65% in the FIR filter. This technique consumes less power compared to previous approaches that uses low power technique only at algorithmic abstraction level. The DET based MAC FIR filter is tested for real-time validation and it is observed that it works perfectly for various signals (speech, music, voice with music). The gain of the filter is tested and is found to be 27 dB (maximum) that matches with most of the hearing aid (manufacturer’s) specifications. Hence it can be concluded that FDF FIR digital filter in conjunction with low power latch is a strong candidate for hearing aid application

    Power efficient and power attacks resistant system design and analysis using aggressive scaling with timing speculation

    Growing usage of smart and portable electronic devices demands embedded system designers to provide solutions with better performance and reduced power consumption. Due to the new development of IoT and embedded systems usage, not only power and performance of these devices but also security of them is becoming an important design constraint. In this work, a novel aggressive scaling based on timing speculation is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of traditional DVFS and provide security from power analysis attacks at the same time. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is proven to be the most suitable technique for power efficiency in processor designs. Due to its promising benefits, the technique is still getting researchers attention to trade off power and performance of modern processor designs. The issues of traditional DVFS are: 1) Due to its pre-calculated operating points, the system is not able to suit to modern process variations. 2) Since Process Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations are not considered, large timing margins are added to guarantee a safe operation in the presence of variations. The research work presented here addresses these issues by employing aggressive scaling mechanisms to achieve more power savings with increased performance. This approach uses in-situ timing error monitoring and recovering mechanisms to reduce extra timing margins and to account for process variations. A novel timing error detection and correction mechanism, to achieve more power savings or high performance, is presented. This novel technique has also been shown to improve security of processors against differential power analysis attacks technique. Differential power analysis attacks can extract secret information from embedded systems without knowing much details about the internal architecture of the device. Simulated and experimental data show that the novel technique can provide a performance improvement of 24% or power savings of 44% while occupying less area and power overhead. Overall, the proposed aggressive scaling technique provides an improvement in power consumption and performance while increasing the security of processors from power analysis attacks.N/

    Optimizing Embedded Software of Self-Powered IoT Edge Devices for Transient Computing

    IoT edge computing becomes increasingly popular as it can mitigate the burden of cloud servers significantly by offloading tasks from the cloud to the edge which contains the majority of IoT devices. Currently, there are trillions of edge devices all over the world, and this number keeps increasing. A vast amount of edge devices work under power-constrained scenarios such as for outdoor environmental monitoring. Considering the cost and sustainability, in the long run, self-powering through energy harvesting technology is preferred for these IoT edge devices. Nevertheless, a common and critical drawback of self-powered IoT edge devices is that their runtime states in volatile memory such as SRAM will be lost during the power outage. Thanks to the state-of-the-art non-volatile processor (NVP), the runtime volatile states can be saved into the on-chip non-volatile memory before the power outage and recovered when harvesting power becomes available. Yet the potential of a self-powered IoT edge device is still hindered by the intrinsic low energy efficiency and reliability. In order to fully exert the potentials of existing self-powered IoT edge devices, this dissertation aims at optimizing the energy efficiency and reliability of self-powered IoT edge devices through several software approaches. First, to prevent execution progress loss during the power outage, NVP-aware task schedulers are proposed to maximize the overall task execution progress especially for the atomic tasks of which the unfinished progress is subjected to loss regardless of having been checkpointed. Second, to minimize both the time and energy overheads of checkpointing operations on non-volatile memory, an intelligent checkpointing scheme is proposed which can not only ensure a successful checkpointing but also predict the necessity of conducting checkpointing to avoid excessive checkpointing overhead. Third, to avoid inappropriate runtime CPU clock frequency with low energy utility, a CPU frequency modulator is proposed which adjusts the runtime CPU clock frequency adaptively. Finally, to thrive in ultra-low harvesting power scenarios, a light-weight software paradigm is proposed to help maximize the energy extraction rate of the energy harvester and power regulator bundle. Besides, checkpointing is also optimized for more energy-efficient and light-weight operation
