INTEGRATED HUB LOCATION AND CAPACITATED VEHICLE ROUTING PROBLEM OVER INCOMPLETE HUB NETWORKS

    Get PDF
Hub location problem is one of the most important topics encountered in transportation and logistics management. Along with the question of where to position hub facilities, how routes are determined is a further challenging problem. Although these two problems are often considered separately in the literature, here, in this study, the two are analyzed together. Firstly, we relax the restriction that a vehicle serves between each demand center and hub pair and propose a mixed-integer mathematical model for the single allocation p-hub median and capacitated vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pick-up and delivery. Moreover, while many studies in hub location problem literature assume that there is a complete hub network structure, we also relax this assumption and present the aforementioned model over incomplete hub networks. Computational analyses of the proposed models were conducted on various instances on the Turkish network. Results indicate that the different capacity levels of vehicles have an important impact on optimal hub locations, hub arc networks, and routing design

The multicommodity capacitated fixed-charge network design problem (MCFND) and the multilayer network design problem (MLND) are among the most important network design problems. In the single-layer MCFND problem, several commodities have to be routed between different origin-destination pairs of a given potential network. Appropriate capacitated links have to be opened to route the commodities. The problem is to find the minimum cost design and routing such that the demands are satisfied and the capacities are respected. In the MLND, there are several potential networks, each at a given layer. In each network, the flow requirements for a set of commodities must be satisfied. However, the selection of the links is interdependent. To open a link in a particular layer, a chain of supporting links in another layer has to be opened. We address the multilayer single flow-type multicommodity capacitated fixed-charge network design problem (MSMCFND), where commodities are routed only in one of the layers. Lagrangian-based algorithms are one of the most effective solution methods to solve network design problems. The traditional Lagrangian relaxations for the MCFND problem are the flow and knapsack relaxations, where the resulting Lagrangian subproblems decompose by commodity and by arc, respectively. We present new node-based relaxations, where the resulting subproblem decomposes by node. We show that the Lagrangian dual bound improves significantly upon the bounds of the traditional relaxations. We also propose a Lagrangian-based algorithm to obtain upper bounds. Network design problems have been the object of extensive literature reviews. However, in recent years, interesting applications of multilayer problems have appeared that are not covered in these surveys. We present a review of multilayer problems and propose a general formulation for the MLND. We also propose a general formulation and an efficient Lagrangian-based solution methodology for the MMCFND problem. The method is competitive with (and often significantly better than) a state-of-the-art mixedinteger programming solver on a large set of randomly generated instances

The Vehicle Routing Problem with Service Level Constraints

We consider a vehicle routing problem which seeks to minimize cost subject to service level constraints on several groups of deliveries. This problem captures some essential challenges faced by a logistics provider which operates transportation services for a limited number of partners and should respect contractual obligations on service levels. The problem also generalizes several important classes of vehicle routing problems with profits. To solve it, we propose a compact mathematical formulation, a branch-and-price algorithm, and a hybrid genetic algorithm with population management, which relies on problem-tailored solution representation, crossover and local search operators, as well as an adaptive penalization mechanism establishing a good balance between service levels and costs. Our computational experiments show that the proposed heuristic returns very high-quality solutions for this difficult problem, matches all optimal solutions found for small and medium-scale benchmark instances, and improves upon existing algorithms for two important special cases: the vehicle routing problem with private fleet and common carrier, and the capacitated profitable tour problem. The branch-and-price algorithm also produces new optimal solutions for all three problems

A Tabu Search Heuristic Procedure for the Capacitated Facility Location Problem

A tabu search heuristic procedure for the capacitated facility location problem is developed, implemented and computationally tested. The heuristic procedure uses both short term and long term memories to perform the main search process as well as the diversification and intensification functions. Visited solutions are stored in a primogenitary linked quad tree as a long term memory. The recent iteration at which a facility changed its status is stored for each facility site as a short memory. Lower bounds on the decreases of total cost are used to measure the attractiveness of switching the status of facilities and are used to select a move in the main search process. A specialized transportation algorithm is developed and employed to exploit the problem structure in solving transportation problems. The performance of the heuristic procedure is tested through computational experiments using test problems from the literature and new test problems randomly generated. It found optimal solutions for a most all test problems used. As compared to the Lagrangean and the surrogate/Lagrangean heuristic methods, the tabu search heuristic procedure found much better solutions using much less CPU time.Capacitated facility location, Tabu search, Metaheuristics

In the efficient management of the supply chain the optimal management of transport of consumables and finished products appears. The costs associated with transport have direct impact on the final value consumers must pay, which in addition to requiring competitive products also demand that they are generated in environmentally friendly organizations. Aware of this reality, this document is intended to be a starting point for Master's and Doctoral degree students who want to work in a line of research recently proposed: green routing. The state of the art of the vehicle routing problem is presented in this paper, listing its variants, models and methodologies for solution. Furthermore, the proposed interaction between variants of classical routing problems and environmental effects of its operations, known in the literature as Green-VRP is presented. The goal is to generate a discussion in which mathematical models and solution strategies that can be applied within organizations that consider within their objectives an efficient and sustainable operation are posed. An updated annotated bibliography on arc routing problems

The number of arc routing publications has increased significantly in the last decade. Such an increase justifies a second annotated bibliography, a sequel to Corberán and Prins (Networks 56 (2010), 50–69), discussing arc routing studies from 2010 onwards. These studies are grouped into three main sections: single vehicle problems, multiple vehicle problems and applications. Each main section catalogs problems according to their specifics. Section 2 is therefore composed of four subsections, namely: the Chinese Postman Problem, the Rural Postman Problem, the General Routing Problem (GRP) and Arc Routing Problems (ARPs) with profits. Section 3, devoted to the multiple vehicle case, begins with three subsections on the Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP) and then delves into several variants of multiple ARPs, ending with GRPs and problems with profits. Section 4 is devoted to applications, including distribution and collection routes, outdoor activities, post-disaster operations, road cleaning and marking. As new applications emerge and existing applications continue to be used and adapted, the future of arc routing research looks promising.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
