    On oriented graphs with minimal skew energy

    Let S(Gσ)S(G^\sigma) be the skew-adjacency matrix of an oriented graph GσG^\sigma. The skew energy of GσG^\sigma is defined as the sum of all singular values of its skew-adjacency matrix S(Gσ)S(G^\sigma). In this paper, we first deduce an integral formula for the skew energy of an oriented graph. Then we determine all oriented graphs with minimal skew energy among all connected oriented graphs on nn vertices with m (nm<2(n2))m \ (n\le m < 2(n-2)) arcs, which is an analogy to the conjecture for the energy of undirected graphs proposed by Caporossi {\it et al.} [G.     An improved Belief Propagation algorithm finds many Bethe states in the random field Ising model on random graphs

    We first present an empirical study of the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm, when run on the random field Ising model defined on random regular graphs in the zero temperature limit. We introduce the notion of maximal solutions for the BP equations and we use them to fix a fraction of spins in their ground state configuration. At the phase transition point the fraction of unconstrained spins percolates and their number diverges with the system size. This in turn makes the associated optimization problem highly non trivial in the critical region. Using the bounds on the BP messages provided by the maximal solutions we design a new and very easy to implement BP scheme which is able to output a large number of stable fixed points. On one side this new algorithm is able to provide the minimum energy configuration with high probability in a competitive time. On the other side we found that the number of fixed points of the BP algorithm grows with the system size in the critical region. This unexpected feature poses new relevant questions on the physics of this class of models.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure

    On some interconnections between combinatorial optimization and extremal graph theory

    The uniting feature of combinatorial optimization and extremal graph theory is that in both areas one should find extrema of a function defined in most cases on a finite set. While in combinatorial optimization the point is in developing efficient algorithms and heuristics for solving specified types of problems, the extremal graph theory deals with finding bounds for various graph invariants under some constraints and with constructing extremal graphs. We analyze by examples some interconnections and interactions of the two theories and propose some conclusions

    Extremal Optimization for Graph Partitioning

    Extremal optimization is a new general-purpose method for approximating solutions to hard optimization problems. We study the method in detail by way of the NP-hard graph partitioning problem. We discuss the scaling behavior of extremal optimization, focusing on the convergence of the average run as a function of runtime and system size. The method has a single free parameter, which we determine numerically and justify using a simple argument. Our numerical results demonstrate that on random graphs, extremal optimization maintains consistent accuracy for increasing system sizes, with an approximation error decreasing over runtime roughly as a power law t^(-0.4). On geometrically structured graphs, the scaling of results from the average run suggests that these are far from optimal, with large fluctuations between individual trials.     On the sum of k largest singular values of graphs and matrices

    In the recent years, the trace norm of graphs has been extensively studied under the name of graph energy. The trace norm is just one of the Ky Fan k-norms, given by the sum of the k largest singular values, which are studied more generally in the present paper. Several relations to chromatic number, spectral radius, spread, and to other fundamental parameters are outlined.     Spectral Reconstruction and Isomorphism of graphs using variable neighbourhood search

    The Euclidean distance between the eigenvalue sequences of graphs G and H, on the same number of vertices, is called the spectral distance between G and H. This notion is the basis of a heuristic algorithm for reconstructing a graph with prescribed spectrum. By using a graph &Gamma; constructed from cospectral graphs G and H, we can ensure that G and H are isomorphic if and only if the spectral distance between &Gamma;&nbsp; and G+K2 is zero. This construction is exploited to design a heuristic algorithm for testing graph isomorphism. We present preliminary experimental results obtained by implementing these algorithms in conjunction with a meta-heuristic known as a variable neighbourhood search
