    Uncertainty in the manufacturing of fibrous thermosetting composites: A review

    Composites manufacturing involves many sources of uncertainty associated with material properties variation and boundary conditions variability. In this study, experimental and numerical results concerning the statistical characterization and the influence of inputs variability on the main steps of composites manufacturing including process-induced defects are presented and analysed. Each of the steps of composite manufacturing introduces variability to the subsequent processes, creating strong interdependencies between the process parameters and properties of the final part. The development and implementation of stochastic simulation tools is imperative to quantify process output variabilities and develop optimal process designs in composites manufacturing

    A Model-Based Approach to Managing Feature Binding Time in Software Product Line Engineering

    Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) is a software reuse paradigm for developing software products, from managed reusable assets, based on analysis of commonality and variability (C & V) of a product line. Many approaches of SPLE use a feature as a key abstraction to capture the C&V. Recently, there have been increasing demands for the provision of flexibility about not only the variability of features but also the variability of when features should be selected (i.e., variability on feature binding times). Current approaches to support variations of feature binding time mostly focused on ad hoc implementation mechanisms. In this paper, we first identify the challenges of feature binding time management and then propose an approach to analyze the variation of feature binding times and use the results to specify model-based architectural components for the product line. Based on the specification, components implementing variable features are parameterized with the binding times and the source codes for the components and the connection between them are generated

    Deals versus Rules: Policy Implementation Uncertainty and Why Firms Hate It

    Firms in Africa report "regulatory and economic policy uncertainty" as a top constraint to their growth. We argue that often firms in Africa do not cope with policy rules, rather they face deals; firm-specific policy actions that can be influenced by firm actions (e.g. bribes) and characteristics (e.g. political connections). Using Enterprise Survey data we demonstrate huge variability in reported policy actions across firms notionally facing the same policy. The within-country dispersion in firm-specific policy actions is larger than the cross-national differences in average policy. We show that variability in this policy implementation uncertainty within location-sector-size cells is correlated with firm growth rates. These measures of implementation variability are more strongly related to lower firm employment growth than are measures of "average" policy action. Finally, we show that the de jure measures such as Doing Business indicators are virtually uncorrelated with ex-post firm-level responses, further evidence that deals rather than rules prevail in Africa. Strikingly, the gap between de jure and de facto conditions grows with the formal regulatory burden. The evidence also shows more burdensome processes open up more space for making deals; firms may not incur the official costs of compliance, but they still pay to avoid them. Finally, measures of institutional capacity and better governance are closely associated with perceived consistency in implementation.

    Stochastic simulation of the influence of cure kinetics uncertainty on composites cure

    A stochastic cure simulation methodology is developed and implemented to investigate the influence of cure kinetics uncertainty due to different initial resin state on the process of cure. The simulation addresses heat transfer effects and allows quantification of uncertainty in temperature overshoot during the cure. Differential Scanning Calorimetry was used to characterise cure kinetics variability of a commercial epoxy resin used in aerospace applications. It was found that cure kinetics uncertainty is associated with variations in the initial degree of cure, activation energy and reaction order. A cure simulation model was coupled with conventional Monte Carlo and an implementation of the Probabilistic Collocation Method. Both simulation schemes are capable of capturing variability propagation, with the collocation method presenting benefits in terms of computational cost against the Monte Carlo scheme with comparable accuracy. Simulation of the cure of a carbon fibre–epoxy panel shows that cure kinetics uncertainty can cause considerable variability in the process outcome with a coefficient of variation in temperature overshoot of about 30%
