Querying XML data streams from wireless sensor networks: an evaluation of query engines
As the deployment of wireless sensor networks increase and their application domain widens, the opportunity for effective use of XML filtering and streaming query engines is ever more present. XML filtering engines aim to provide efficient real-time querying of streaming XML encoded data. This paper provides a detailed analysis of several such engines, focusing on the technology involved, their capabilities, their support for XPath and their performance. Our experimental evaluation identifies which filtering engine is best suited to process a given query based on its properties. Such metrics are important in establishing the best approach to filtering XML streams on-the-fly
Adding Logical Operators to Tree Pattern Queries on Graph-Structured Data
As data are increasingly modeled as graphs for expressing complex
relationships, the tree pattern query on graph-structured data becomes an
important type of queries in real-world applications. Most practical query
languages, such as XQuery and SPARQL, support logical expressions using
logical-AND/OR/NOT operators to define structural constraints of tree patterns.
In this paper, (1) we propose generalized tree pattern queries (GTPQs) over
graph-structured data, which fully support propositional logic of structural
constraints. (2) We make a thorough study of fundamental problems including
satisfiability, containment and minimization, and analyze the computational
complexity and the decision procedures of these problems. (3) We propose a
compact graph representation of intermediate results and a pruning approach to
reduce the size of intermediate results and the number of join operations --
two factors that often impair the efficiency of traditional algorithms for
evaluating tree pattern queries. (4) We present an efficient algorithm for
evaluating GTPQs using 3-hop as the underlying reachability index. (5)
Experiments on both real-life and synthetic data sets demonstrate the
effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm, from several times to orders of
magnitude faster than state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of evaluation time,
even for traditional tree pattern queries with only conjunctive operations.Comment: 16 page
A review of user interface adaption in current semantic web browsers
The semantic web is an example of an innumerable corpus because it contains innumerable subjects expressed using innumerable ontologies. This paper reviews current semantic web browsers to see if they can adaptively show meaningful data presentations to users. The paper also seeks to discover if current semantic web browsers provide a rich enough set of capabilities for future user interface work to be built upon
SWI-Prolog and the Web
Where Prolog is commonly seen as a component in a Web application that is
either embedded or communicates using a proprietary protocol, we propose an
architecture where Prolog communicates to other components in a Web application
using the standard HTTP protocol. By avoiding embedding in external Web servers
development and deployment become much easier. To support this architecture, in
addition to the transfer protocol, we must also support parsing, representing
and generating the key Web document types such as HTML, XML and RDF.
This paper motivates the design decisions in the libraries and extensions to
Prolog for handling Web documents and protocols. The design has been guided by
the requirement to handle large documents efficiently. The described libraries
support a wide range of Web applications ranging from HTML and XML documents to
Semantic Web RDF processing.

Comparative Analysis of Five XML Query Languages
XML is becoming the most relevant new standard for data representation and
exchange on the WWW. Novel languages for extracting and restructuring the XML
content have been proposed, some in the tradition of database query languages
(i.e. SQL, OQL), others more closely inspired by XML. No standard for XML query
language has yet been decided, but the discussion is ongoing within the World
Wide Web Consortium and within many academic institutions and Internet-related
major companies. We present a comparison of five, representative query

A practical mandatory access control model for XML databases
A practical mandatory access control (MAC) model for XML databases is presented in this paper. The
label type and label access policy can be defined according to the requirements of different applications. In order to
preserve the integrity of data in XML databases, a constraint between a read-access rule and a write-access rule in
label access policy is introduced. Rules for label assignment and propagation are presented to alleviate the workload
of label assignments. Furthermore, a solution for resolving conflicts in label assignments is proposed. Rules for
update-related operations, rules for exceptional privileges of ordinary users and the administrator are also proposed
to preserve the security of operations in XML databases. The MAC model, we proposed in this study, has been
implemented in an XML database. Test results demonstrated that our approach provides rational and scalable
performance
