    Methods for Ordinal Peer Grading

    MOOCs have the potential to revolutionize higher education with their wide outreach and accessibility, but they require instructors to come up with scalable alternates to traditional student evaluation. Peer grading -- having students assess each other -- is a promising approach to tackling the problem of evaluation at scale, since the number of "graders" naturally scales with the number of students. However, students are not trained in grading, which means that one cannot expect the same level of grading skills as in traditional settings. Drawing on broad evidence that ordinal feedback is easier to provide and more reliable than cardinal feedback, it is therefore desirable to allow peer graders to make ordinal statements (e.g. "project X is better than project Y") and not require them to make cardinal statements (e.g. "project X is a B-"). Thus, in this paper we study the problem of automatically inferring student grades from ordinal peer feedback, as opposed to existing methods that require cardinal peer feedback. We formulate the ordinal peer grading problem as a type of rank aggregation problem, and explore several probabilistic models under which to estimate student grades and grader reliability. We study the applicability of these methods using peer grading data collected from a real class -- with instructor and TA grades as a baseline -- and demonstrate the efficacy of ordinal feedback techniques in comparison to existing cardinal peer grading methods.     Information-seeking on the Web with Trusted Social Networks - from Theory to Systems

    This research investigates how synergies between the Web and social networks can enhance the process of obtaining relevant and trustworthy information. A review of literature on personalised search, social search, recommender systems, social networks and trust propagation reveals limitations of existing technology in areas such as relevance, collaboration, task-adaptivity and trust. In response to these limitations I present a Web-based approach to information-seeking using social networks. This approach takes a source-centric perspective on the information-seeking process, aiming to identify trustworthy sources of relevant information from within the user's social network. An empirical study of source-selection decisions in information- and recommendation-seeking identified five factors that influence the choice of source, and its perceived trustworthiness. The priority given to each of these factors was found to vary according to the criticality and subjectivity of the task. A series of algorithms have been developed that operationalise three of these factors (expertise, experience, affinity) and generate from various data sources a number of trust metrics for use in social network-based information seeking. The most significant of these data sources is Revyu.com, a reviewing and rating Web site implemented as part of this research, that takes input from regular users and makes it available on the Semantic Web for easy re-use by the implemented algorithms. Output of the algorithms is used in Hoonoh.com, a Semantic Web-based system that has been developed to support users in identifying relevant and trustworthy information sources within their social networks. Evaluation of this system's ability to predict source selections showed more promising results for the experience factor than for expertise or affinity. In online platforms, people influence each other, and have tendency to reflect their opinions in decision-making. Social Network Services (SNSs) and E-commerce are typical example of online platforms. User behaviors in online platforms can be defined as relation between user and platform components. A user's purchase is a relationship between a user and a product, and a user's check-in is a relationship between a user and a place. Here, information such as action time, rating, tag, etc. may be included. In many studies, platform user behavior is represented in graph form. At this time, the elements constituting the nodes of the graph are composed of objects such as users and products and places within the platform, and the interaction between the platform elements and the user can be expressed as two nodes being connected. In this study, I present studies to identify potential networks that affect the user's behavior graph defined on the two platforms. In ANES, I focus on representation learning for social link inference based on user trajectory data. While traditional methods predict relations between users by considering hand-crafted features, recent studies first perform representation learning using network/node embedding or graph neural networks (GNNs) for downstream tasks such as node classification and link prediction. However, those approaches fail to capture behavioral patterns of individuals ingrained in periodical visits or long-distance movements. To better learn behavioral patterns, this paper proposes a novel scheme called ANES (Aspect-oriented Network Embedding for Social link inference). ANES learns aspect-oriented relations between users and Point-of-Interests (POIs) within their contexts. ANES is the first approach that extracts the complex behavioral pattern of users from both trajectory data and the structure of User-POI bipartite graphs. Extensive experiments on several real-world datasets show that ANES outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. In contrast to active social networks, people are connected to other users regardless of their intentions in some platforms, such as online shopping websites and restaurant review sites. They do not have any information about each other in advance, and they only have a common point which is that they have visited or have planned to visit same place or purchase a product. Interestingly, users have tendency to be influenced by the review data on their purchase intentions. Unfortunately, this instinct is easily exploited by opinion spammers. In SC-Com, I focus on opinion spam detection in online shopping services. In many cases, my decision-making process is closely related to online reviews. However, there have been threats of opinion spams by hired reviewers increasingly, which aim to mislead potential customers by hiding genuine consumers opinions. Opinion spams should be filed up collectively to falsify true information. Fortunately, I propose the way to spot the possibility to detect them from their collusiveness. In this paper, I propose SC-Com, an optimized collusive community detection framework. It constructs the graph of reviewers from the collusiveness of behavior and divides a graph by communities based on their mutual suspiciousness. After that, I extract community-based and temporal abnormality features which are critical to discriminate spammers from other genuine users. I show that my method detects collusive opinion spam reviewers effectively and precisely from their collective behavioral patterns. In the real-world dataset, my approach showed prominent performance while only considering primary data such as time and ratings.     Determining the Link and Rate Popularity of Enterprise Process Information

    Today's knowledge workers are confronted with a high load of heterogeneous information making it difficult for them to identify the information relevant for performing their tasks. Particularly challenging is thereby the alignment of process-related information (process information for short), such as e-mails, office files, forms, checklists, guidelines, and best practices, with business processes. In previous work, we introduced the concept of process-oriented information logistics (POIL) to bridge this gap. POIL allows for the process-oriented and context-aware delivery of relevant process information to knowledge workers. So far, we have introduced concepts to integrate business processes with process information. A remaining challenge is to identify the process information relevant for a given process context. This paper tackles this challenge and extends our POIL approach with techniques and algorithms for identifying relevant process information. More specifically, we introduce two algorithms for determining the relevance of process information based on their link and rate popularity. We use a scenario from the automotive domain to demonstrate and validate the applicability of our approach

Such a large volume of data constantly being generated can be considered as a big data challenge for both online businesses and consumers. That makes it difficult for buyers to go through all the reviews to make purchase decisions. In this research, we have developed models based on machine learning that can predict the helpfulness of the consumer reviews using several textual features such as polarity, subjectivity, entropy, and reading ease. The model will automatically assign helpfulness values to an initial review as soon as it is posted on the website so that the review gets a fair chance of being viewed by other buyers. The results of this study will help buyers to write better reviews and thereby assist other buyers in making their purchase decisions, as well as help businesses to improve their websites

    An examination of online ratings on hotel performance indicators: An analysis of the Boston hotel market

    This research study is designed to examine the impact that a posted online review rating has on the financial performance of a hotel room in the lodging industry. The popularity ratings of hotels in the Boston, Massachusetts market, as posted on the popular online travel review website TripAdvisor, will be examined against the hotel performance metrics of average daily rate (ADR), occupancy, and Revenue per Available Room (RevPar). This study examines the literature to better understand the previous research behind the impact that word-of-mouth communication, both in traditional and electronic forms, has on customer satisfaction. The emergence of social technologies has created an environment in which businesses can be rated and reviewed in an open market for potential future customers to read, and the development of user-generated content has become a more trusted and credible source of product and service information. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of these online ratings on hotel performance, specifically that of TripAdvisor rating attributes on the financial performance of a hotel. The study found that the various attributes had varying levels of significant impact on Average Daily Rate (ADR), Occupancy, and Revenue per Available Room (RevPar). Based on the natures of the lodging properties in Boston, Value was found to be statistically significant across all categories analyzed. Ultimately, the contribution of this research is both academic and practical, as this study will be among the first to examine and test the various TripAdvisor rating attributes on each hotel financial performance metric. In addition, this study will expand upon the current body of knowledge in the areas of user-generated content, online reviews, ratings of TripAdvisor, and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM)
