    Validity concerns in software engineering research

    Empirical studies that use software repository artifacts have become popular in the last decade due to the ready avail-ability of open source project archives. In this paper, we survey empirical studies in the last three years of ICSE and FSE proceedings, and categorize these studies in terms of open source projects vs. proprietary source projects and the diversity of subject programs used in these studies. Our survey has shown that almost half (49%) of recent empirical studies used solely open source projects. Existing studies either draw general conclusions from these results or explic-itly disclaim any conclusions that can extend beyond specific subject software. We conclude that researchers in empirical software engi-neering must consider the external validity concerns that arise from using only several well-known open source soft-ware projects, and that discussion of data source selection is an important discussion topic in software engineering re-search. Furthermore, we propose a community research in-frastructure for software repository benchmarks and sharing the empirical analysis results, in order to address external validity concerns and to raise the bar for empirical software engineering research that analyzes software artifacts

    On Integrating Student Empirical Software Engineering Studies with Research and Teaching Goals

    Background: Many empirical software engineering studies use students as subjects and are conducted as part of university courses. Aim: We aim at reporting our experiences with using guidelines for integrating empirical studies with our research and teaching goals. Method: We document our experience from conducting three studies with graduate students in two software architecture courses. Results: Our results show some problems that we faced when following the guidelines and deviations we made from the original guidelines. Conclusions: Based on our results we propose recommendations for empirical software engineering studies that are integrated in university courses.

    Computer Graphics Education at the Faculty of Informatics of Kansai University

    This paper describes the Computer Graphics education at the Faculty of Informatics, which is newly established in 1994, of Kansai University. This faculty focuses on inter-academic research and educational fields related to "information," which involves science, engineering, sociology, economics, politics, and so on. Recently, Computer Graphics has been playing an important role in visualizing several kinds of information, so that fundamental education in Computer Graphics will be required in every field. The resulting educational problem in this faculty concerns the different motivations, goals, backgrounds and skills of students should be educated equally in the same classes. To solve this problem, a multi-modal curriculum involving one lecture and two laboratory sessions for 3-D Computer Graphics has been established as the most effective way to diseminate knowledge and skills for all students. The hardware and software environments for laboratory sessions are considered, and the validity of the educational system is evaluated in the preliminary laboratory session and private seminar using a high-end graphics system during 1995

    Boundary Objects and their Use in Agile Systems Engineering

    Agile methods are increasingly introduced in automotive companies in the attempt to become more efficient and flexible in the system development. The adoption of agile practices influences communication between stakeholders, but also makes companies rethink the management of artifacts and documentation like requirements, safety compliance documents, and architecture models. Practitioners aim to reduce irrelevant documentation, but face a lack of guidance to determine what artifacts are needed and how they should be managed. This paper presents artifacts, challenges, guidelines, and practices for the continuous management of systems engineering artifacts in automotive based on a theoretical and empirical understanding of the topic. In collaboration with 53 practitioners from six automotive companies, we conducted a design-science study involving interviews, a questionnaire, focus groups, and practical data analysis of a systems engineering tool. The guidelines suggest the distinction between artifacts that are shared among different actors in a company (boundary objects) and those that are used within a team (locally relevant artifacts). We propose an analysis approach to identify boundary objects and three practices to manage systems engineering artifacts in industry
