Vacant Parking Lot Information System Using Transfer Learning and IoT
Parking information systems have become very important, especially in metropolitan areas as they help to save time, effort and fuel when searching for parking. This paper offers a novel low-cost deep learning approach to easily implement vacancy detection at outdoor parking spaces with CCTV surveillance. The proposed method also addresses issues due to perspective distortion in CCTV images. The architecture consists of three classifiers for checking the availability of parking spaces. They were developed on the TensorFlow platform by re-training MobileNet (a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)) model using the transfer learning technique. A performance analysis showed 88% accuracy for vacancy detection. An end-to-end application model with Internet of Things (IoT) and an Android application is also presented. Users can interact with the cloud using their Android application to get real-time updates on parking space availability and the parking location. In the future, an autonomous car could use this system as a V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) application in deciding the nearest parking space
Predicting space occupancy for street paid parking
This dissertation discusses how to develop a prediction method for on-street parking
space availability, using only historical occupancy data collected from on-street multi-space
parking meters.
It is analyzed how to transform the raw data into a dataset representing the occupancy and
how can this information be used to detect when the parking spaces on a street are Vacant
or Full. Attributes like weather conditions and holidays are added to the data, giving them
more context and comprehension.
After the data preparation and analysis, a prediction model is developed using machinelearning techniques that can forecast the availability of the parking spaces on a street at a
specific day and on a given moment.
For that, a classification method is implemented based on decision trees and neural
networks, comparing both methods regarding results and development time. Particular
attention is given to the algorithm parameters, to achieve the right balance between accuracy
and computational time.
The developed model proved effective, correctly capturing the different behavior of each
street through the different weeks, and returning results useful to drivers searching for
parking and to the business owners while monitoring their parking investments and returns.Esta dissertação apresenta como pode ser desenvolvido um método para previsão de

através de parquímetros de controlo a múltiplos lugares.
É analisado como os dados em bruto dos parquímetros podem ser transformados num
conjunto de dados que represente qual a ocupação dos lugares, e posteriormente como esta
informação pode ser utilizada para detetar se o estacionamento em uma rua está livre ou
ocupado. São adicionados também mais alguns atributos, como por exemplo informação
sobre as condições meteorológicas ou que dias são feriados, dando mais algum contexto e
compreensão à informação já existente.
Após a preparação e análise dos dados, é desenvolvido um método de previsão utilizando
técnicas de aprendizagem automática de modo a que seja possível saber qual a
disponibilidade de estacionamento em uma rua, a um dia específico e a um determinado
momento.
Para isso, foi implementado um método de classificação baseado em árvores de decisão
e redes neuronais, comparando ambos os métodos do ponto de vista dos resultados e do
tempo de desenvolvimento. Foi dada especial atenção aos parâmetros utilizados em cada
algoritmo, de modo a que haja um balanço entre a precisão e tempo de computação.
O modelo desenvolvido mostrou ser eficaz, captando corretamente o comportamento de
cada rua nas diferentes semanas, devolvendo resultados uteis aos condutores que procurem
lugares de estacionamento e aos proprietários do negócio por lhes permitir monitorizar o
desempenho dos seus investimentos em parques de estacionamento e qual o retorno
A stigmergy-based analysis of city hotspots to discover trends and anomalies in urban transportation usage
A key aspect of a sustainable urban transportation system is the
effectiveness of transportation policies. To be effective, a policy has to
consider a broad range of elements, such as pollution emission, traffic flow,
and human mobility. Due to the complexity and variability of these elements in
the urban area, to produce effective policies remains a very challenging task.
With the introduction of the smart city paradigm, a widely available amount of
data can be generated in the urban spaces. Such data can be a fundamental
source of knowledge to improve policies because they can reflect the
sustainability issues underlying the city. In this context, we propose an
approach to exploit urban positioning data based on stigmergy, a bio-inspired
mechanism providing scalar and temporal aggregation of samples. By employing
stigmergy, samples in proximity with each other are aggregated into a
functional structure called trail. The trail summarizes relevant dynamics in
data and allows matching them, providing a measure of their similarity.
Moreover, this mechanism can be specialized to unfold specific dynamics.
Specifically, we identify high-density urban areas (i.e hotspots), analyze
their activity over time, and unfold anomalies. Moreover, by matching activity
patterns, a continuous measure of the dissimilarity with respect to the typical
activity pattern is provided. This measure can be used by policy makers to
evaluate the effect of policies and change them dynamically. As a case study,

Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining for Shared Mobility and Connected and Automated Vehicle Applications
The rapid development of shared mobility and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has not only brought new intelligent transportation system (ITS) challenges with the new types of mobility, but also brought a huge opportunity to accelerate the connectivity and informatization of transportation systems, particularly when we consider all the new forms of data that is becoming available. The primary challenge is how to take advantage of the enormous amount of data to discover knowledge, build effective models, and develop impactful applications. With the theoretical and experimental progress being made over the last two decades, data mining and machine learning technologies have become key approaches for parsing data, understanding information, and making informed decisions, especially as the rise of deep learning algorithms bringing new levels of performance to the analysis of large datasets. The combination of data mining and ITS can greatly benefit research and advances in shared mobility and CAVs.This dissertation focuses on knowledge discovery and data mining for shared mobility and CAV applications. When considering big data associated with shared mobility operations and CAV research, data mining techniques can be customized with transportation knowledge to initially parse the data. Then machine learning methods can be used to model the parsed data to elicit hidden knowledge. Finally, the discovered knowledge and extracted information can help in the development of effective shared mobility and CAV applications to achieve the goals of a safer, faster, and more eco-friendly transportation systems.In this dissertation, there are four main sections that are addressed. First, new methodologies are introduced for extracting lane-level road features from rough crowdsourced GPS trajectories via data mining, which is subsequently used as the fundamental information for CAV applications. The proposed method results in decimeter level accuracy, which satisfies the positioning needs for many macroscopic and microscopic shared mobility and CAV applications. Second, macroscopic ride-hailing service big data has been analyzed for demand prediction, vehicle operation, and system efficiency monitoring. The proposed deep learning algorithms increase the ride-hailing demand prediction accuracy to 80% and can help the fleet dispatching system reduce 30% of vacant travel distance. Third, microscopic automated vehicle perception data has been analyzed for a real-time computer vision system that can be used for lane change behavior detection. The proposed deep learning design combines the residual neural network image input with time serious control data and reaches 95% of lane change behavior prediction accuracy. Last but not least, new ride sharing and CAV applications have been simulated in a behavior modeling framework to analyze the impact of mobility and energy consumption, which addresses key barriers by quantifying the transportation system-wide mobility, energy and behavior impacts from new mobility technologies using real-world data

Sustaining Glasgow's Urban Networks: the Link Communities of Complex Urban Systems
As cities grow in population size and became more crowded (UN DESA, 2018), the main future challenges around the world will remain to be accommodating the growing urban population while drastically reducing environmental pressure. Contemporary urban agglomerations (large or small) constantly impose burden on the natural environment by conveying ecosystem services to close and distant places, through coupled human nature [infrastructure] systems (CHANS). Tobler’s first law in geography (1970) that states that “everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things” is now challenged by globalization.
When this law was first established, the hypothesis referred to geological processes (Campbell and Shin, 2012, p.194) that were predominantly observed in pre-globalized economy, where freight was costly and mainly localized (Zhang et al., 2018). With the recent advances and modernisation made in transport technologies, most of them in the sea and air transportation (Zhang et al., 2018) and the growth of cities in population, natural resources and bi-products now travel great distances to infiltrate cities (Neuman, 2006) and satisfy human demands. Technical modernisation and the global hyperconnectivity of human interactions and trading, in the last thirty years alone resulted with staggering 94 per cent growth of resource extraction and consumption (Giljum et al., 2015). Local geographies (Kennedy, Cuddihy and Engel-Yan, 2007) will remain affected by global urbanisation (Giljum et al., 2015), and as a corollary, the operational inefficiencies of their local infrastructure networks, will contribute even more to the issues of environmental unsustainability on a global scale.
Another challenge for future city-regions is the equity of public infrastructure services and policy creation that promote the same (Neuman and Hull, 2009). Public infrastructure services refer to services provisioned by networked infrastructure, which are subject to both public obligation and market rules. Therefore, their accessibility to all citizens needs to be safeguarded. The disparity of growth between networked infrastructure and socio-economic dynamics affects the sustainable assimilation and equal access to infrastructure in various districts in cities, rendering it as a privilege. Yet, the empirical evidence of whether the place of residence acts as a disadvantage to public service access and use, remains rather scarce (Clifton et al., 2016). The European Union recognized (EU, 2011) the issue of equality in accessibility (i.e. equity) critical for territorial cohesion and sustainable development across districts, municipalities and regions with diverse economic performance.
Territorial cohesion, formally incorporated into the Treaty of Lisbon, now steers the policy frameworks of territorial development within the Union. Subsequently, the European Union developed a policy paradigm guided by equal access (Clifton et al., 2016) to public infrastructure services, considering their accessibility as instrumental aspect in achieving territorial cohesion across and within its member states.
A corollary of increasing the equity to public infrastructure services among growing global population is the potential increase in environmental pressure they can impose, especially if this pressure is not decentralised and surges at unsustainable rate (Neuman, 2006). This danger varies across countries and continents, and is directly linked to the increase of urban population due to; [1] improved quality of life and increased life expectancy and/or [2] urban in-migration of rural population and/or [3] global political or economic immigration.
These three rising urban trends demand new approaches to reimagine planning and design practices that foster infrastructure equity, whilst delivering environmental justice. Therefore, this research explores in depth the nature of growth of networked infrastructure (Graham and Marvin, 2001) as a complex system and its disparity from the socio-economic growth (or decline) of Glasgow and Clyde Valley city-region. The results of this research gain new understanding in the potential of using emerging tools from network science for developing optimization strategy that supports more cecentralized, efficient, fair and (as an outcome) sustainable enlargement of urban infrastructure, to accommodate new and empower current residents of the city.
Applying the novel link clustering community detection algorithm (Ahn et al., 2010) in this thesis I have presented the potential for better understanding the complexity behind the urban system of networked infrastructure, through discovering their overlapping communities. As I will show in the literature review (Chapter 2), the long standing tradition of centralised planning practice relying on zoning and infiltrating infrastructure, left us with urban settlements which are failing to respond to the environmental pressure and the socio-economic inequalities. Building on the myriad of knowledge from planners, geographers, sociologists and computer scientists, I developed a new element (i.e. link communities) within the theory of urban studies that defines cities as complex systems. After, I applied a method borrowed from the study of complex networks to unpack their basic elements. Knowing the link (i.e. functional, or overlapping) communities of metropolitan Glasgow enabled me to evaluate the current level of communities interconnectedness and reveal the gaps as well as the potentials for improving the studied system’s performance.
The complex urban system in metropolitan Glasgow was represented by its networked infrastructure, which essentially was a system of distinct sub-systems, one of them mapped by a physical and the other one by a social graph. The conceptual framework for this methodological approach was formalised from the extensively reviewed literature and methods utilising network science tools to detect community structure in complex networks. The literature review led to constructing a hypothesis claiming that the efficiency of the physical network’s topology is achieved through optimizing the number of nodes with high betweenness centrality, while the efficiency of the logical network’s topology is achieved by optimizing the number of links with high edge betweenness.
The conclusion from the literature review presented through the discourse on to the primal problem in 7.4.1, led to modelling the two network topologies as separate graphs. The bipartite graph of their primal syntax was mirrored to be symmetrical and converted to dual. From the dual syntax I measured the complete accessibility (i.e. betweenness centrality) of the entire area and not only of the streets.
Betweenness centrality of a node measures the number of shortest paths that pass through the node connecting pairs of nodes. The betweenness centrality is same as the integration of streets in space syntax, where the streets are analysed in their dual syntax representation. Street integration is the number of intersections the street shares with other streets and a high value means high accessibility.
Edges with high betweenness are shared between strong communities. Based on the theoretical underpinnings of the network’s modularity and community structure analysed herein, it can be concluded that a complex network that is both robust and efficient (and in urban planning terminology ‘sustainable’) is consisted of numerous strong communities connected with each other by optimal number of links with high edge betweenness. To get this insight, the study detected the edge cut-set and vertex cut-set of the complex network. The outcome was a statistical model developed in the open source software R (Ihaka and Gentleman, 1996). The model empirical detects the network’s overlapping communities, determining the current sustainability of its physical and logical topologies.
Initially, an assumption was that the number of communities within the infrastructure (physical) network layer were different from the one in the logical. They were detected using the Louvain method that performs graph partitioning on the hierarchical streets structure. Further, the number of communities in the relational network layer (i.e. accessibility to locations) was detected based on the OD accessibility matrix established from the functional dependency between the household locations and predefined points of interest. The communities from the graph of the ‘relational layer' were discovered with the single-link hierarchical clustering algorithm. Learning spatiotemporal patterns for monitoring smart cities and infrastructure
Recent advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) have changed the way we interact with the world. The ability to monitor and manage objects in the physical world electronically makes it possible to bring data-driven decision making to new realms of city infrastructure and management. Large volumes of spatiotemporal data have been collected from pervasive sensors in both indoor and outdoor environments, and this data reveals dynamic patterns in cities, infrastructure, and public property. In light of the need for new approaches to analysing such data, in this thesis, we propose present relevant data mining techniques and machine learning approaches to extract knowledge from spatiotemporal data to solve real-world problems. Many challenges and problems are under-addressed in smart cities and infrastructure monitoring systems such as indoor person identification, evaluation of city regions segmentation with parking events, fine collection from cars in violations, parking occupancy prediction and airport aircraft path map reconstruction. All the above problems are associated with both spatial and temporal information and the accurate pattern recognition of these spatiotemporal data are essential for determining problem solutions. Therefore, how to incorporate spatiotemporal data mining techniques, artificial intelligence approaches and expert knowledge in each specific domain is a common challenge. In the indoor person identification area, identifying the person accessing a secured room without vision-based or device-based systems is very challenging. In particular, to distinguish time-series patterns on high-dimensional wireless signal channels caused by different activities and people, requires novel time-series data mining approaches. To solve this important problem, we established a device-free system and proposed a two-step solution to identify a person who has accessed a secure area such as an office. Establishing smart parking systems in cities is a key component of smart cities and infrastructure construction. Many sub-problems such as parking space arrangements, fine collection and parking occupancy prediction are urgent and important for city managers. Arranging parking spaces based on historical data can improve the utilisation rate of parking spaces. To arrange parking spaces based on collected spatiotemporal data requires reasonable region segmentation approaches. Moreover, evaluating parking space grouping results needs to consider the correlation between the spatial and temporal domains since these are heterogeneous. Therefore, we have designed a spatiotemporal data clustering evaluation approach, which exploits the correlation between the spatial domain and the temporal domain. It can evaluate the segmentation results of parking spaces in cities using historical data and similar clustering results that group data consisting of both spatial and temporal domains. For fine collection problem, using the sensor instrumentation installed in parking spaces to detect cars in violation and issue infringement notices in a short time-window to catch these cars in time is significantly difficult. This is because most cars in violation leave within a short period and multiple cars are in violation at the same time. Parking officers need to choose the best route to collect fines from these drivers in the shortest time. Therefore, we proposed a new optimisation problem called the Travelling Officer Problem and a general probability-based model. We succeeded in integrating temporal information and the traditional optimisation algorithm. This model can suggest to parking officers an optimised path that maximise the probability to catch the cars in violation in time. To solve this problem in real-time, we incorporated the model with deep learning methods. We proposed a theoretical approach to solving the traditional orienteering problem with deep learning networks. This approach could improve the efficiency of similar urban computing problems as well. For parking occupancy prediction, a key problem in parking space management is with providing a car parking availability prediction service that can inform car drivers of vacant parking lots before they start their journeys using prediction approaches. We proposed a deep learning-based model to solve this parking occupancy prediction problem using spatiotemporal data analysis techniques. This model can be generalised to other spatiotemporal data prediction problems also. In the airport aircraft management area, grouping similar spatiotemporal data is widely used in the real world. Determining key features and combining similar data are two key problems in this area. We presented a new framework to group similar spatiotemporal data and construct a road graph with GPS data. We evaluated our framework experimentally using a state-of-the-art test-bed technique and found that it could effectively and efficiently construct and update airport aircraft route map. In conclusion, the studies in this thesis aimed to discover intrinsic and dynamic patterns from spatiotemporal data and proposed corresponding solutions for real-world smart cities and infrastructures monitoring problems via spatiotemporal pattern analysis and machine learning approaches. We hope this research will inspire the research community to develop more robust and effective approaches to solve existing problems in this area in the future
Data-Driven Approach based on Deep Learning and Probabilistic Models for PHY-Layer Security in AI-enabled Cognitive Radio IoT.
PhD Theses.Cognitive Radio Internet of Things (CR-IoT) has revolutionized almost every eld of life
and reshaped the technological world. Several tiny devices are seamlessly connected in
a CR-IoT network to perform various tasks in many applications. Nevertheless, CR-IoT
su ers from malicious attacks that pulverize communication and perturb network performance.
Therefore, recently it is envisaged to introduce higher-level Arti cial Intelligence
(AI) by incorporating Self-Awareness (SA) capabilities into CR-IoT objects to facilitate
CR-IoT networks to establish secure transmission against vicious attacks autonomously.
In this context, sub-band information from the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
(OFDM) modulated transmission in the spectrum has been extracted from the
radio device receiver terminal, and a generalized state vector (GS) is formed containing
low dimension in-phase and quadrature components. Accordingly, a probabilistic method
based on learning a switching Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) from OFDM transmission
with no abnormalities has been proposed to statistically model signal behaviors
inside the CR-IoT spectrum. A Bayesian lter, Markov Jump Particle Filter (MJPF),
is implemented to perform state estimation and capture malicious attacks.
Subsequently, GS containing a higher number of subcarriers has been investigated. In
this connection, Variational autoencoders (VAE) is used as a deep learning technique
to extract features from high dimension radio signals into low dimension latent space
z, and DBN is learned based on GS containing latent space data. Afterward, to perform
state estimation and capture abnormalities in a spectrum, Adapted-Markov Jump
Particle Filter (A-MJPF) is deployed. The proposed method can capture anomaly that
appears due to either jammer attacks in transmission or cognitive devices in a network
