The development of a conversion model for programmers converting a VSAM File to Oracle Tables

    Get PDF
This paper describes the development and evaluation of a conversion model for converting a VSAM file to Oracle tables. The conversion model was developed for programmers within the Student Information Group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The purpose for the developing the conversion model was to provide stepby- step instructions to assist the programmers in the conversion process. To assist in the development of the conversion model, feedback from the programmers both before and after the development of the conversion model was gathered. Other methods used in the development of the conversion model included conducting a case study of previous conversions and implementing an actual VSAM to Oracle conversion

System Programming - The Human and the Machine

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to document my experiences in planning, generating, and modifying the IBM VM/SP operating system (systems programming), survey literature on systems programming, and to draw conclusions as to what makes a successful systems programming experience. I will explore the skills necessary for the systems programmer to perform the tasks, as well as discuss aspects of the system itself (hardware, software, and documentation) that affect the success of any systems programming effort. This work is intended to serve as a case study of a VM/SP systems programmer working on WISPcompatible hardware. Judgments as to how these skills and conclusions may apply to other platforms are left to the reader

This paper describes the evolution of data base technology from early computing to the sophisticated systems of today. It presents an overview of the most popular data base management systems architectures such as hierarchical, network, relational and object-oriented. The last section of this paper presents a view of the factors that will influence the future of data base technology

Types and concept analysis for legacy systems

    Get PDF
We combine type inference and concept analysis in order to gain insight into legacy software systems. Type inference for Cobol yields the types for variables and program parameters. These types are used to perform mathematical concept analysis on legacy systems. We have developed ConceptRefinery, a tool for interactively manipulating concepts. We show how this tools facilitates experiments with concept analysis, and lets reengineers employ their knowedge of the legacy system to refine the results of concept analysis

Cooperative Processing: An Agenda for Research

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential research agenda for Cooperative Processing (COP). COP is a method of processing in which communications is an integral part of the process of executing an application. Numerous innovative products that support COP are starting to appear on the market. However, as is usually the case with any new technology, many organizations have not yet implemented COP. They have embraced a wait and see attitude. Such a stance can be attributed to the newness of the applications operating in COP mode and to the lack of data demonstrating COP\u27S uses and benefits. For example, no data, at present, demonstrates basic COP efficacy. Among many possible research areas this paper suggests topics such as: potential COP users, types of applications benefiting from the COP processing mode, and organizational and technological factors involved in COP implementation
