    Development of a low-cost multi-camera star tracker for small satellites

    This thesis presents a novel small satellite star tracker that uses an array of low-cost, off the shelf imaging sensors to achieve high accuracy attitude determination performance. The theoretical analysis of improvements in star detectability achieved by stacking images from multiple cameras is presented. An image processing algorithm is developed to combine images from multiple cameras with arbitrary focal lengths, principal point offsets, distortions, and misalignments. The star tracker also implements other algorithms including the region growing algorithm, the intensity weighted centroid algorithm, the geometric voting algorithm for star identification, and the singular value decomposition algorithm for attitude determination. A star tracker software simulator is used to test the algorithms by generating star images with sensor noises, lens defocusing, and lens distortion. A hardware prototype is being assembled for eventual night sky testing to verify simulated performance levels. Star tracker flight hardware is being developed in the Laboratory for Advanced Space Systems at Illinois (LASSI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign for future CubeSat missions

    An Efficient Plot Fusion Method for High Resolution Radar Based on Contour Tracking Algorithm

    With the development of radar system, the problem of enormous raw data has drawn much attention. A plot fusion method based on contour tracking algorithm is proposed to detect extended targets in a radar image. Firstly, the characteristic of radar image in complex environment is revealed. Then, the steps of traditional method, region growing method, and the proposed method are introduced. Meanwhile, the algorithm of tracking the contour of an extended target is illustrated in detail. It is not necessary to scan all the plots in the image, because the size of target is considered in the proposed method. Therefore, the proposed method is much more efficient than several existing methods. Lastly, the performance of several methods is tested using the raw data of two scenarios in real world. The experiment results show that the proposed method is practical and most likely to satisfy the real-time requirement in various complex environment

    Design and evaluation of a digital processing unit for satellite angular velocity estimation

    A satellite's absolute attitude and angular rate are both important measurements for satellite missions that require navigation. Typically, these measurements have been made by separate sensors, with star cameras being used to determine a satellite's absolute attitude, and gyroscopes being used as the primary rate sensors. Recently, there have been multiple efforts to measure both of these quantities using only the star camera, however the work primarily involves solutions where the optical sensor and the unit that processes the images are separate integrated circuits. Operation in this modality requires the use of chip to chip communication in order to estimate angular rate from star tracker images, which can lead to an increase in system power, a degradation in performance, and increased latency. The goal of this thesis is to consolidate the sensing and processing into a single integrated circuit. The design and evaluation of a digital processing unit that estimates angular rate and facilitates the realization of image sensor and processor integration is presented. The processing unit is implemented in UMC's 130 nm process, has an area of 10 mm × 200 μm, and consumes 8.253 mW of power

    Exploring space situational awareness using neuromorphic event-based cameras

    The orbits around earth are a limited natural resource and one that hosts a vast range of vital space-based systems that support international systems use by both commercial industries, civil organisations, and national defence. The availability of this space resource is rapidly depleting due to the ever-growing presence of space debris and rampant overcrowding, especially in the limited and highly desirable slots in geosynchronous orbit. The field of Space Situational Awareness encompasses tasks aimed at mitigating these hazards to on-orbit systems through the monitoring of satellite traffic. Essential to this task is the collection of accurate and timely observation data. This thesis explores the use of a novel sensor paradigm to optically collect and process sensor data to enhance and improve space situational awareness tasks. Solving this issue is critical to ensure that we can continue to utilise the space environment in a sustainable way. However, these tasks pose significant engineering challenges that involve the detection and characterisation of faint, highly distant, and high-speed targets. Recent advances in neuromorphic engineering have led to the availability of high-quality neuromorphic event-based cameras that provide a promising alternative to the conventional cameras used in space imaging. These cameras offer the potential to improve the capabilities of existing space tracking systems and have been shown to detect and track satellites or ‘Resident Space Objects’ at low data rates, high temporal resolutions, and in conditions typically unsuitable for conventional optical cameras. This thesis presents a thorough exploration of neuromorphic event-based cameras for space situational awareness tasks and establishes a rigorous foundation for event-based space imaging. The work conducted in this project demonstrates how to enable event-based space imaging systems that serve the goals of space situational awareness by providing accurate and timely information on the space domain. By developing and implementing event-based processing techniques, the asynchronous operation, high temporal resolution, and dynamic range of these novel sensors are leveraged to provide low latency target acquisition and rapid reaction to challenging satellite tracking scenarios. The algorithms and experiments developed in this thesis successfully study the properties and trade-offs of event-based space imaging and provide comparisons with traditional observing methods and conventional frame-based sensors. The outcomes of this thesis demonstrate the viability of event-based cameras for use in tracking and space imaging tasks and therefore contribute to the growing efforts of the international space situational awareness community and the development of the event-based technology in astronomy and space science applications

    Smart cmos image sensor for 3d measurement

    3D measurements are concerned with extracting visual information from the geometry of visible surfaces and interpreting the 3D coordinate data thus obtained, to detect or track the position or reconstruct the profile of an object, often in real time. These systems necessitate image sensors with high accuracy of position estimation and high frame rate of data processing for handling large volumes of data. A standard imager cannot address the requirements of fast image acquisition and processing, which are the two figures of merit for 3D measurements. Hence, dedicated VLSI imager architectures are indispensable for designing these high performance sensors. CMOS imaging technology provides potential to integrate image processing algorithms on the focal plane of the device, resulting in smart image sensors, capable of achieving better processing features in handling massive image data. The objective of this thesis is to present a new architecture of smart CMOS image sensor for real time 3D measurement using the sheet-beam projection methods based on active triangulation. Proposing the vision sensor as an ensemble of linear sensor arrays, all working in parallel and processing the entire image in slices, the complexity of the image-processing task shifts from O (N 2 ) to O (N). Inherent also in the design is the high level of parallelism to achieve massive parallel processing at high frame rate, required in 3D computation problems. This work demonstrates a prototype of the smart linear sensor incorporating full testability features to test and debug both at device and system levels. The salient features of this work are the asynchronous position to pulse stream conversion, multiple images binarization, high parallelism and modular architecture resulting in frame rate and sub-pixel resolution suitable for real time 3D measurements
