Optimierung kommerzieller Translation-Memory-Systeme durch Integration morphosyntaktischer Analyseverfahren

Seit Anfang der 90er Jahre zählen Translation Memorys zu den bedeutsamsten Werkzeugen im Bereich der computergestützten Übersetzung. Dennoch wird in den meisten auf dem Markt verfügbaren Translation-Memory-Systemen nur ein Vergleich der Zeichenketten zwischen einem neu zu übersetzenden Segment mit einem im Translation Memory gespeicherten ausgangssprachlichen Segment durchgeführt, um ähnliche Übersetzungseinheiten aufzufinden. Linguistische Übereinstimmungen bleiben häufig unberücksichtigt, sodass bedeutungsgleiche bzw. -ähnliche Segmente mit unterschiedlicher (morpho-)syntaktischer Struktur nicht oder nur mit einem geringeren Ähnlichkeitswert ausgegeben werden. In diesem Band wird die Optimierung eines kommerziellen Translation-Memory-Systems durch Hinzuschaltung eines morphosyntaktischen Analyseprogramms beschrieben. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf der Erläuterung des entwickelten Prototyps, bestehend aus der Beschreibung des erweiterten Algorithmus zur Identifikation der längsten gemeinsamen Teilzeichenketten zwischen zwei zu vergleichenden ausgangssprachlichen Segmenten sowie des selbst konzipierten, auf linguistischen Analysen beruhenden Proximitätsmaßes zur Ermittlung von Ähnlichkeitswerten, die das menschliche Ähnlichkeitsempfinden abbilden sollen. Die umfangreiche Evaluierung des entwickelten Systems demonstriert das Ausmaß der erreichten linguistischen Optimierung kommerzieller zeichenkettenbasierter Translation Memorys

Redaktionsprozesse steuern durch Styleguides.

For a long time style guides have been one of the central meta-communicative genres in the economic world. But so far they have not been the focus of linguistic analysis. The article offers a short linguistic characterization of style guides. It describes the role style guides play in different units of modern companies. An analysis of typical advantages of style guides for technical writing units is offered. However these advantages are often nullified by obstacles in the implementation process. Some of the most common reasons for the abortion of style guide implementations are shown, i. e. • Too much time passes between the start of the project and the first benefits for the styleguide users. • Authors fear too restrictive frameworks and the loss of creativity in their work. • The most knowledgeable contributors to the style guide usually carry the largest workload and gain the least benefit from the implementation. The article consequently proposes a model, how style guides may be utilized not only as a restricted framework for writing at work but as a process oriented tool for the management of editorial processes

Developing a 'Neo-Metric' for the evaluation of translation memory

A novel system by which Translation Memory (TM) tools can be evaluated would be desirable for translation industry stakeholders. Such evaluation systems are commonly known as metrics. While metrics devised to evaluate Machine Translation (MT) are well developed, there has been limited work on the creation of a TM tool metric. This paper discusses the creation of a ‘Neo-Metric’ designed to help translators, translation professionals and translation industry stakeholders as they evaluate TM software. Having identified a need for such a metric, a brief literature review is conducted. Variables to be included in the Neo-Metric are discussed, and an initial metric is introduced. This first version of the metric is briefly tested, weaknesses are identified, and based on these initial tests, a refined metric is developed for more in-depth testing along with testing in the field, both to be discussed in future papers

Translation-Memory (TM) Research: What Do We Know and How Do We Know It?

It is no exaggeration to say that the advent of translation-memory (TM) systems in the translation profession has led to drastic changes in translators’ processes and workflow, and yet, though many professional translators nowadays depend on some form of TM system, this has not been the object of much research. Our paper attempts to find out what we know about the nature, applications and influences of TM technology, including translators’ interaction with TMs, and also how we know it. An essential part of the analysis is based on a selection of empirical TM studies, which we assume to be representative of the research field as a whole. Our analysis suggests that, while considerable knowledge is available about the technical side of TMs, more research is needed to understand how translators interact with TM technology and how TMs infl uence translators’ cognitive translation processes

Wie nützlich sind Translation-Memory-Systeme bei der Übersetzung von Fachtexten?

Die Grundlage der vorliegenden Masterarbeit bildet die Forschungsfrage „Wie nützlich sind Translation-Memory-Systeme bei der Übersetzung von Fachtexten?“. Bevor im prak-tischen Teil versucht wird, eine Antwort darauf zu finden, wird zunächst der Begriff Qua-lität als Zeichen der Professionalität von Expertinnen und Experten, wie Fachübersetze-rinnen und Fachübersetzer es sind, beleuchtet. Dabei wird neben den Möglichkeiten zur Qualitätssicherung und –steigerung im Allgemeinen auch auf die Sicherung der Qualität in der Übersetzungsbranche und bei der Übersetzung technischer Dokumentationen einge-gangen. Da Terminologiearbeit einen grundlegenden Baustein beim Fachübersetzen dar-stellt, wird auch dieser Punkt unter Berücksichtigung der Rolle von Terminologiemana-gementsystemen genauer ausgeführt. In einem weiteren Kapitel werden vorbereitend zum praktischen Teil dieser Arbeit verschiedene Aspekte von Translation-Memory-Programmen, darunter auch deren Bedeutung, Nutzen sowie Probleme, diskutiert. Mithilfe eines praktischen von der Verfasserin durchgeführten Experiments wird schließlich anhand des Einsatzes zweier Translation-Memory-Systeme bei der Übersetzung von Texten aus verschiedenen Fachbereichen und unterschiedlichen Umfangs der Nutzen dieser Tools im Bezug auf die Faktoren Zeit, Qualität und Ökonomie analysiert und die Ergebnisse einschließlich der zukünftigen Trends dieser Anwendungen in einem abschließenden Fazit präsentiert.The present Master’s thesis is based on the research topic “How useful are translation memory systems in the translation of technical texts?”. Before trying to find an answer to this question in the practical part of this paper, first the term quality, signifying the profes-sionalism of experts such as technical translators, is elaborated. That chapter includes measures for quality assurance and improvement in general as well as for the translating industry and in the translation of technical documentations. Since terminology work is an essential component of technical translating, its importance is stressed out in an own chap-ter, also highlighting the role of terminology management systems. Finishing the theoreti-cal and introducing the practical part of the present thesis, different aspects of translation memory programmes, including their role, advantages and problems, are discussed. Finally, the benefit of translation memory tools concerning the factors time, quality and economic efficiency is analysed based on a practical experiment conducted by the author of this paper using two translation memory systems for translating documents from diverse professional fields and with different scopes. The results as well as the future trends of translation memory software are presented in a final conclusion

Evaluation von Terminologieextraktionsprogrammen

Diese Masterarbeit behandelt methodologische Aspekte der Evaluation von Terminologieextraktionsprogrammen mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf der anwenderorientierten Adäquatheitsevaluation. Als Grundlagen dienen ein Forschungsüberblick zur computergestützten Terminologieextraktion aus computerlinguistischer, terminologischer und translatorischer Sicht sowie eine detaillierte Betrachtung der Terminologieextraktionsprogramme, insbesondere ihres Aufbaus und der Funktionsweise von Terminologieidentifikationsmethoden. Der computergestützte Extraktionsprozess wird anhand der einzelnen Aufgaben und zugehörigen Funktionen beschrieben. In diesem Rahmen wird gesondert auf Probleme bei der Anwendung von Terminologieextraktionsprogrammen eingegangen – die Qualität von Identifikationsergebnissen erweist sich als dominantes, jedoch nicht als einziges Thema. Nach einer Einführung in die Konzepte der Softwarequalität und -evaluation wird der EAGLES-Evaluationsrahmen für sprachverarbeitende Programme ausführlich behandelt. Die einzelnen Phasen der Entwicklung einer Evaluationsmethodologie für eine anwenderorientierte Adäquatheitsevaluation und wichtige Charakteristika der Anforderungen, Merkmale und Methoden sowie der Materialien werden vorgestellt. Mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf der anwenderorientierten Sichtweise werden Methodologien zur Evaluation von Terminologieextraktionsprogrammen betrachtet und auf problematische Methoden und innovative Ansätze untersucht. Die Methodologie zur Evaluation der oft im Vordergrund stehenden Qualität des Identifikationsergebnisses wird besonders detailliert behandelt, darüber hinaus werden zwei auf dem EAGLES-Evaluationsrahmen basierende Methodologien präsentiert und diskutiert. Abschließend werden einige Ideen zur möglichen Entwicklung eines parametrisierbaren Evaluationsmodells für anwenderorientierte Adäquatheitsevaluationen von Terminologieextraktionsprogrammen ausgearbeitet und eine umfassende Kriteriencheckliste sowie Empfehlungen für die Planung von Benchmarktests zur Evaluation des Identifikationsergebnisses entwickelt.In the present Master's Thesis, methodological aspects of the evaluation of terminology extraction software are discussed, especially focussing on user-oriented adequacy evaluation. As a basis, an overview of the current state of research in computer-assisted terminology extraction respecting the different points of view of computational linguists, terminologists and translators is given. Subsequently, the composition of terminology extraction software, especially the functioning of different methods for terminology identification, is outlined. Ensuing, the computer-assisted extraction process is ventilated, including a description of individual tasks and corresponding features as well as a discussion of the problems related to the practical application, being the quality of identification results the predominant, though not the only topic. After an introduction to concepts of software quality and evaluation, the focus is set on the EAGLES evaluation framework for language processing software. The individual steps in creating an evaluation methodology for user-oriented adequacy evaluations and important characteristics of requirements, attributes and methods as well as of materials are presented. Stressing the user-oriented point of view, evaluation methodologies for terminology extraction software are examined, highlighting problematic methods and innovative approaches. The evaluation methodology of the often predominant quality of identification results, as well as two examples of evaluation methodology which are based on the EAGLES evaluation framework are given special attention. Finally, some ideas concerning the possible development of a parametrisable evaluation model for user-oriented adequacy evaluations of terminology extraction software are elaborated, and a comprehensive feature checklist as well as some recommendations for designing benchmark tests for the evaluation of identification results are presented

Placeable and localizable elements in translation memory systems

Translation memory systems (TM systems) are software packages used in computer-assisted translation (CAT) to support human translators. As an example of successful natural language processing (NLP), these applications have been discussed in monographic works, conferences, articles in specialized journals, newsletters, forums, mailing lists, etc. This thesis focuses on how TM systems deal with placeable and localizable elements, as defined in 2.1.1.1. Although these elements are mentioned in the cited sources, there is no systematic work discussing them. This thesis is aimed at filling this gap and at suggesting improvements that could be implemented in order to tackle current shortcomings. The thesis is divided into the following chapters. Chapter 1 is a general introduction to the field of TM technology. Chapter 2 presents the conducted research in detail. The chapters 3 to 12 each discuss a specific category of placeable and localizable elements. Finally, chapter 13 provides a conclusion summarizing the major findings of this research project
