    Software Project Services using Infrastructure-as-Code

    Infrastructure-as-code is a modern practice for IT automation as well as managing complex and large-scale infrastructure. It allows describing infrastructure and configuration in a code-like syntax easily understandable for any software developer. Unlike manual infrastructure configurations the infrastructure code can be versioned, tested, reviewed, and even compiled resulting in the actual desired systems infrastructure and configuration. The objective of this thesis is to create a new software project establishment process for a medium sized software company. The aim is to automate and streamline a beginning phase of new projects by creating and documenting a process of establishing basic software project services by using infrastructure-as-code. A desired feature of the new process is to partly delegate the work of IT department to project teams who are most aware of the tools and services required for each project. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part presents relevant infrastructure-as-code and DevOps software development methodology related theory in a form of a literature review and the second part describes planning and implementing required infrastructure-as-code automations and the actual service establishment process for the case company. The outcome of the study was a new automated project establishment process, in a form of two artifacts: process documentation and required infrastructure-as-code scripts. The study also produced a recommended way for handling the scripts and configuration files during the process, along with multiple other recommendations for similar implementations and for usage of infrastructure-as-code in general. Furthermore, results also included some recommendations for software manufacturers and a brief overview of infrastructure-as-code related risks. Infrastructure-as-code was found to be a powerful enabler of automation and suitable also for workflow automation. However, creating infrastructure-as-code scripts and building a suitable development environment were found to be difficult. Also, several target system related challenges were identified during the implementation. The conclusion considering the service establishment process was that it is feasible to delegate only configuring the infrastructure-as-code implementation to the end users.Infrastruktuuri koodina on moderni IT automaation sekä monimutkaisten ja suurten infrastruktuurien hallinnan käytäntö. Se mahdollistaa infrastruktuurin ja konfiguraation määrittelyn käyttäen ohjelmakoodia muistuttavaa syntaksia, joka on kenen tahansa ohjelmistokehittäjän ymmärrettävissä. Toisin kuin manuaaliset konfiguraatiot, infrastruktuurikoodi voidaan versioida, testata, katselmoida ja jopa kääntää, jolloin lopputuloksena saadaan luotua ja konfiguroitua määrityksen mukainen järjestelmäinfrastruktuuri. Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on luoda uusi ohjelmistoprojektien tarvitsemien palveluiden perustamisprosessi toimeksiantajayritykselle. Tavoitteena on automatisoida ja virtaviivaistaa uusien projektien aloittamista luomalla ja dokumentoimalla uusi tavanomaisten ohjelmistoprojektipalveluiden perustamisprosessi, joka hyödyntää infrastruktuuri koodina -lähestymistapaa. Yksi uuden prosessin toivotuista ominaisuuksista on siirtää tietohallinnon työkuormaa osittain projektitiimeille, joilla on paras käsitys kunkin projektin vaatimista työkaluista ja palveluista. Opinnäytetyö jakautuu kahteen osaan, joista ensimmäinen esittelee infrastruktuuri koodina lähestymistapaan ja DevOps-ohjelmistokehitysmetodologiaan liittyvää teoriaa kirjallisuuskatsauksen muodossa. Toinen osa kuvaa uuden prosessin sekä siihen kuuluvien infrastruktuurikoodien suunnittelua ja toteutusta kohdeyrityksen toimeksiannosta. Tutkimuksen lopputuloksena luotiin uusi automatisoitu projektipalveluiden perustamisprosessi, joka muodostui kahdesta artefaktista: prosessidokumentaatiosta ja vaadittavista infrastruktuuri koodina -skripteistä. Tutkimus tuotti myös suositeltavan tavan skriptien ja konfiguraatiotiedostojen hallintaan prosessin aikana sekä useita suosituksia vastaavanlaisten implementaatioiden luomiseen tulevaisuudessa ja infrastruktuuri koodina -työkalujen käyttöön yleisesti. Tulokset sisälsivät myös suosituksia ohjelmistovalmistajille sekä lyhyen katsauksen infrastruktuuri koodina -lähestymistapaan liittyvistä riskeistä. Infrastruktuuri koodina todettiin tehokkaaksi automaation mahdollistajaksi ja sopivaksi myös työnkulkujen automatisoimiseen. Toisaalta skriptien kirjoittaminen ja tarvittavan kehitysympäristön rakentaminen havaittiin haasteellisiksi tehtäviksi. Tutkimuksen edetessä havaittiin myös useita kohdejärjestelmiin liittyviä haasteita. Johtopäätös palveluiden perustamisprosessin kannalta oli, että loppukäyttäjille on järkevää ja mahdollista delegoida ainoastaan skriptien tarvitseman konfiguraation tuottaminen

    A SEMANTIC BASED POLICY MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR CLOUD COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS

    Cloud computing paradigm has gained tremendous momentum and generated intensive interest. Although security issues are delaying its fast adoption, cloud computing is an unstoppable force and we need to provide security mechanisms to ensure its secure adoption. In this dissertation, we mainly focus on issues related to policy management and access control in the cloud. Currently, users have to use diverse access control mechanisms to protect their data when stored on the cloud service providers (CSPs). Access control policies may be specified in different policy languages and heterogeneity of access policies pose significant problems.An ideal policy management system should be able to work with all data regardless of where they are stored. Semantic Web technologies when used for policy management, can help address the crucial issues of interoperability of heterogeneous CSPs. In this dissertation, we propose a semantic based policy management framework for cloud computing environments which consists of two main components, namely policy management and specification component and policy evolution component. In the policy management and specification component, we first introduce policy management as a service (PMaaS), a cloud based policy management framework that give cloud users a unified control point for specifying authorization policies, regardless of where the data is stored. Then, we present semantic based policy management framework which enables users to specify access control policies using semantic web technologies and helps address heterogeneity issues of cloud computing environments. We also model temporal constraints and restrictions in GTRBAC using OWL and show how ontologies can be used to specify temporal constraints. We present a proof of concept implementation of the proposed framework and provide some performance evaluation. In the policy evolution component, we propose to use role mining techniques to deal with policy evolution issues and present StateMiner, a heuristic algorithm to find an RBAC state as close as possible to both the deployed RBAC state and the optimal state. We also implement the proposed algorithm and perform some experiments to demonstrate its effectiveness

    Nip it in the Bud: Moderation Strategies in Open Source Software Projects and the Role of Bots

    Much of our modern digital infrastructure relies critically upon open sourced software. The communities responsible for building this cyberinfrastructure require maintenance and moderation, which is often supported by volunteer efforts. Moderation, as a non-technical form of labor, is a necessary but often overlooked task that maintainers undertake to sustain the community around an OSS project. This study examines the various structures and norms that support community moderation, describes the strategies moderators use to mitigate conflicts, and assesses how bots can play a role in assisting these processes. We interviewed 14 practitioners to uncover existing moderation practices and ways that automation can provide assistance. Our main contributions include a characterization of moderated content in OSS projects, moderation techniques, as well as perceptions of and recommendations for improving the automation of moderation tasks. We hope that these findings will inform the implementation of more effective moderation practices in open source communities

    Salattujen komento- ja ohjauskanavien havaitseminen verkkosormenjälkien avulla

    The threat landscape of the Internet has evolved drastically into an environment where malware are increasingly developed by financially motivated cybercriminal groups who mirror legitimate businesses in their structure and processes. These groups develop sophisticated malware with the aim of transforming persistent control over large numbers of infected machines into profit. Recent developments have shown that malware authors seek to hide their Command and Control channels by implementing custom application layer protocols and using custom encryption algorithms. This technique effectively thwarts conventional pattern-based detection mechanisms. This thesis presents network fingerprints, a novel way of performing network-based detection of encrypted Command and Control channels. The goal of the work was to produce a proof of concept system that is able to generate accurate and reliable network signatures for this purpose. The thesis presents and explains the individual phases of an analysis pipeline that was built to process and analyze malware network traffic and to produce network fingerprint signatures. The analysis system was used to generate network fingerprints that were deployed to an intrusion detection system in real-world networks for a test period of 17 days. The experimental phase produced 71 true positive detections and 9 false positive detections, and therefore proved that the established technique is capable of performing detection of targeted encrypted Command and Control channels. Furthermore, the effects on the performance of the underlying intrusion detection system were measured. These results showed that network fingerprints induce an increase of 2-9% to the packet loss and a small increase to the overall computational load of the intrusion detection system.Internetin uhkaympäristön radikaalin kehittymisen myötä edistyksellisiä haittaohjelmia kehittävät kyberrikollisryhmät ovat muuttuneet järjestäytyneiksi ja taloudellista voittoa tavoitteleviksi organisaatioiksi. Nämä rakenteiltaan ja prosesseiltaan laillisia yrityksiä muistuttavat organisaatiot pyrkivät saastuttamaan suuria määriä tietokoneita ja saavuttamaan yhtämittaisen hallintakyvyn. Tutkimukset ovat osoittaneet, että tuntemattomien salausmenetelmien ja uusien sovellustason protokollien käyttö haittaohjelmien komento- ja hallintakanavien piilottamiseksi tietoverkoissa ovat kasvussa. Tämän kaltaiset tekniikat vaikeuttavat oleellisesti perinteisiä toistuviin kuvioihin perustuvia havaitsemismenetelmiä. Tämä työ esittelee salattujen komento- ja hallintakanavien havaitsemiseen suunnitellun uuden konseptin, verkkosormenjäljet. Työn tavoitteena oli toteuttaa prototyyppijärjestelmä, joka analysoi ja prosessoi haittaohjelmaliikennettä, sekä kykenee tuottamaan tarkkoja ja tehokkaita haittaohjelmakohtaisia verkkosormenjälkitunnisteita. Työ selittää verkkosormenjälkien teorian ja käy yksityiskohtaisesti läpi kehitetyn järjestelmän eri osiot ja vaiheet. Järjestelmästä tuotetut verkkosormenjäljet asennettiin 17 päiväksi oikeisiin tietoverkkoihin osaksi tunkeilijan havaitsemisjärjestelmää. Testijakso tuotti yhteensä 71 oikeaa haittaohjelmahavaintoa sekä 9 väärää havaintoa. Menetelmän käyttöönoton vaikutukset tunkeilijan havaitsemisjärjestelmän suorituskykyyn olivat 2 – 9 % kasvu pakettihäviössä ja pieni nousu laskennallisessa kokonaiskuormituksessa. Tulokset osoittavat, että kehitetty järjestelmä kykenee onnistuneesti analysoimaan haittaohjelmaliikennettä sekä tuottamaan salattuja komento- ja hallintakanavia havaitsevia verkkosormenjälkiä

    Adaptation of the human nervous system for self-aware secure mobile and IoT systems

    IT systems have been deployed across several domains, such as hospitals and industries, for the management of information and operations. These systems will soon be ubiquitous in every field due to the transition towards the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT brings devices with sensory functions into IT systems through the process of internetworking. The sensory functions of IoT enable them to generate and process information automatically, either without human contribution or having the least human interaction possible aside from the information and operations management tasks. Security is crucial as it prevents system exploitation. Security has been employed after system implementation, and has rarely been considered as a part of the system. In this dissertation, a novel solution based on a biological approach is presented to embed security as an inalienable part of the system. The proposed solution, in the form of a prototype of the system, is based on the functions of the human nervous system (HNS) in protecting its host from the impacts caused by external or internal changes. The contributions of this work are the derivation of a new system architecture from HNS functionalities and experiments that prove the implementation feasibility and efficiency of the proposed HNS-based architecture through prototype development and evaluation. The first contribution of this work is the adaptation of human nervous system functions to propose a new architecture for IT systems security. The major organs and functions of the HNS are investigated and critical areas are identified for the adaptation process. Several individual system components with similar functions to the HNS are created and grouped to form individual subsystems. The relationship between these components is established in a similar way as in the HNS, resulting in a new system architecture that includes security as a core component. The adapted HNS-based system architecture is employed in two the experiments prove its implementation capability, enhancement of security, and overall system operations. The second contribution is the implementation of the proposed HNS-based security solution in the IoT test-bed. A temperature-monitoring application with an intrusion detection system (IDS) based on the proposed HNS architecture is implemented as part of the test-bed experiment. Contiki OS is used for implementation, and the 6LoWPAN stack is modified during the development process. The application, together with the IDS, has a brain subsystem (BrSS), a spinal cord subsystem (SCSS), and other functions similar to the HNS whose names are changed. The HNS functions are shared between an edge router and resource-constrained devices (RCDs) during implementation. The experiment is evaluated in both test-bed and simulation environments. Zolertia Z1 nodes are used to form a 6LoWPAN network, and an edge router is created by combining Pandaboard and Z1 node for a test-bed setup. Two networks with different numbers of sensor nodes are used as simulation environments in the Cooja simulator. The third contribution of this dissertation is the implementation of the proposed HNS-based architecture in the mobile platform. In this phase, the Android operating system (OS) is selected for experimentation, and the proposed HNS-based architecture is specifically tailored for Android. A context-based dynamically reconfigurable access control system (CoDRA) is developed based on the principles of the refined HNS architecture. CoDRA is implemented through customization of Android OS and evaluated under real-time usage conditions in test-bed environments. During the evaluation, the implemented prototype mimicked the nature of the HNS in securing the application under threat with negligible resource requirements and solved the problems in existing approaches by embedding security within the system. Furthermore, the results of the experiments highlighted the retention of HNS functions after refinement for different IT application areas, especially the IoT, due to its resource-constrained nature, and the implementable capability of our proposed HNS architecture.--- IT-järjestelmiä hyödynnetään tiedon ja toimintojen hallinnassa useilla aloilla, kuten sairaaloissa ja teollisuudessa. Siirtyminen kohti esineiden Internetiä (Internet of Things, IoT) tuo tällaiset laitteet yhä kiinteämmäksi osaksi jokapäiväistä elämää. IT-järjestelmiin liitettyjen IoT-laitteiden sensoritoiminnot mahdollistavat tiedon automaattisen havainnoinnin ja käsittelyn osana suurempaa järjestelmää jopa täysin ilman ihmisen myötävaikutusta, poislukien mahdolliset ylläpito- ja hallintatoimenpiteet. Turvallisuus on ratkaisevan tärkeää IT-järjestelmien luvattoman käytön estämiseksi. Valitettavan usein järjestelmäsuunnittelussa turvallisuus ei ole osana ydinsuunnitteluprosessia, vaan otetaan huomioon vasta käyttöönoton jälkeen. Tässä väitöskirjassa esitellään uudenlainen biologiseen lähestymistapaan perustuva ratkaisu, jolla turvallisuus voidaan sisällyttää erottamattomaksi osaksi järjestelmää. Ehdotettu prototyyppiratkaisu perustuu ihmisen hermoston toimintaan tilanteessa, jossa se suojelee isäntäänsä ulkoisten tai sisäisten muutosten vaikutuksilta. Tämän työn keskeiset tulokset ovat uuden järjestelmäarkkitehtuurin johtaminen ihmisen hermoston toimintaperiaatteesta sekä tällaisen järjestelmän toteutettavuuden ja tehokkuuden arviointi kokeellisen prototyypin kehittämisen ja toiminnan arvioinnin avulla. Tämän väitöskirjan ensimmäinen kontribuutio on ihmisen hermoston toimintoihin perustuva IT-järjestelmäarkkitehtuuri. Tutkimuksessa arvioidaan ihmisen hermoston toimintaa ja tunnistetaan keskeiset toiminnot ja toiminnallisuudet, jotka mall-innetaan osaksi kehitettävää järjestelmää luomalla näitä vastaavat järjestelmäkomponentit. Nä-istä kootaan toiminnallisuudeltaan hermostoa vastaavat osajärjestelmät, joiden keskinäinen toiminta mallintaa ihmisen hermoston toimintaa. Näin luodaan arkkitehtuuri, jonka keskeisenä komponenttina on turvallisuus. Tämän pohjalta toteutetaan kaksi prototyyppijärjestelmää, joiden avulla arvioidaan arkkitehtuurin toteutuskelpoisuutta, turvallisuutta sekä toimintakykyä. Toinen kontribuutio on esitetyn hermostopohjaisen turvallisuusratkaisun toteuttaminen IoT-testialustalla. Kehitettyyn arkkitehtuuriin perustuva ja tunkeutumisen estojärjestelmän (intrusion detection system, IDS) sisältävä lämpötilan seurantasovellus toteutetaan käyttäen Contiki OS -käytöjärjestelmää. 6LoWPAN protokollapinoa muokataan tarpeen mukaan kehitysprosessin aikana. IDS:n lisäksi sovellukseen kuuluu aivo-osajärjestelmä (Brain subsystem, BrSS), selkäydinosajärjestelmä (Spinal cord subsystem, SCSS), sekä muita hermoston kaltaisia toimintoja. Nämä toiminnot jaetaan reunareitittimen ja resurssirajoitteisten laitteiden kesken. Tuloksia arvioidaan sekä simulaatioiden että testialustan tulosten perusteella. Testialustaa varten 6LoWPAN verkon toteutukseen valittiin Zolertia Z1 ja reunareititin on toteutettu Pandaboardin ja Z1:n yhdistelmällä. Cooja-simulaattorissa käytettiin mallinnukseen ymp-äristönä kahta erillistä ja erikokoisuta sensoriverkkoa. Kolmas tämän väitöskirjan kontribuutio on kehitetyn hermostopohjaisen arkkitehtuurin toteuttaminen mobiilialustassa. Toteutuksen alustaksi valitaan Android-käyttöjärjestelmä, ja kehitetty arkkitehtuuri räätälöidään Androidille. Tuloksena on kontekstipohjainen dynaamisesti uudelleen konfiguroitava pääsynvalvontajärjestelmä (context-based dynamically reconfigurable access control system, CoDRA). CoDRA toteutetaan mukauttamalla Androidin käyttöjärjestelmää ja toteutuksen toimivuutta arvioidaan reaaliaikaisissa käyttöolosuhteissa testialustaympäristöissä. Toteutusta arvioitaessa havaittiin, että kehitetty prototyyppi jäljitteli ihmishermoston toimintaa kohdesovelluksen suojaamisessa, suoriutui tehtävästään vähäisillä resurssivaatimuksilla ja onnistui sisällyttämään turvallisuuden järjestelmän ydintoimintoihin. Tulokset osoittivat, että tämän tyyppinen järjestelmä on toteutettavissa sekä sen, että järjestelmän hermostonkaltainen toiminnallisuus säilyy siirryttäessä sovellusalueelta toiselle, erityisesti resursseiltaan rajoittuneissa IoT-järjestelmissä

To address the limitations in the existing literature, this dissertation presents a design science artifact and a conceptual model for collaborative environment. The first artifact is a blockchain based collaborative information exchange system that utilizes blockchain technology and semi-automated ontology mappings to enable secure and interoperable health information exchange among different health care institutions. The conceptual model proposed in this dissertation explores the factors that influences professionals continued use of video- conferencing applications. The conceptual model investigates the role the perceived risks and benefits play in influencing professionals’ attitude towards VC apps and consequently its active and automatic use

Transport has a very considerable weight in the framework of sustainable development due to environmental pressures, associated social and economic effects, and interrelations with other sectors. The continuous growth that this sector has experienced over the last few years and its foreseeable increase, even considering the change in trends due to the current situation of generalized crisis, make the challenge of sustainable transport a strategic priority at local, national, European, and global levels.
