Using Semantic-Based User Profile Modeling for Context-Aware Personalised Place Recommendations
Place Recommendation Systems (PRS's) are used to recommend places to visit to World Wide Web users. Existing PRS's are still limited by several problems, some of which are the problem of recommending similar set of places to different users (Lack of Personalization) and no diversity in the set of recommended items (Content Overspecialization). One of the main objectives in the PRS's or Contextual suggestion systems is to fill the semantic gap among the queries and suggestions and going beyond keywords matching. To address these issues, in this study we attempt to build a personalized context-aware place recommender system using semantic-based user profile modeling to address the limitations of current user profile building techniques and to improve the retrieval performance of personalized place recommender system. This approach consists of building a place ontology based on the Open Directory Project (ODP), a hierarchical ontology scheme for organizing websites. We model a semantic user profile from the place concepts extracted from place ontology and weighted according to their semantic relatedness to user interests. The semantic user profile is then exploited to devise a personalized recommendation by re-ranking process of initial search results for improving retrieval performance. We evaluate this approach on dataset obtained using Google Paces API. Results show that our proposed approach significantly improves the retrieval performance compare to classic keyword-based place recommendation model

Cloud computing and context-awareness: A study of the adapted user experience
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Today, mobile technology is part of everyday life and activities and the mobile
ecosystems are blossoming, with smartphones and tablets being the major growth drivers. The mobile phones are no longer just another device, we rely on their capabilities in work and in private. We look to our mobile phones for timely and updated information and we rely on this being provided any time of any day at any place. Nevertheless, no matter how much you trust and love your mobile phone the quality of the information and the user experience is directly associated with the sources and presentation of information. In this perspective, our activities, interactions and preferences help shape the quality of service, content and products we use. Context-aware systems use such information about end-users as input mechanisms for producing applications based on mobile, location, social, cloud and customized content services. This represents new possibilities for extracting aggregated user-centric information and includes novel
sources for context-aware applications. Accordingly, a Design Research based
approach has been taken to further investigate the creation, presentation and tailoring of user-centric information. Through user evaluated experiments findings show how multi-dimensional context-aware information can be used to create adaptive
solutions tailoring the user experience to the users’ needs. Research findings in this
work; highlight possible architectures for integration of cloud computing services in
a heterogeneous mobile environment in future context-aware solutions. When it comes to combining context-aware results from local computations with those of cloud based services, the results provide findings that give users tailored and adapted experiences based on the collective efforts of the two
Living on the Edge: A Humanbecoming Perspective
Living on the edge is a universal lived experience. The humanbecoming theory of nursing science guided the study. The purposes of this investigation were to reveal the structure of the experience of living on the edge, to understand the lived experience of living on the edge, to reveal and gain insight into the unique ways people live their health. This understanding is essential for nurses to value the person\u27s perspective of their personal health and quality of life. The participants were ten persons living in the frontier of the American west. A review of literature evaluated the existing body of knowledge. A synthetic definition through concept inventing has been created (Peterson-Lund, in press). The Parse method of dialogical engagement, extraction-synthesis, and heuristic interpretation was utilized to expand understanding of this phenomenon and contribute to nursing science. The research question was: What is the structure of the experience of living on the edge? The structure of the experience of living on the edge is: Living on the edge is persevering with pioneering ventures amid perilous remoteness, as vacillating sentiments arise with diverse affiliations. The findings provided new knowledge of health and quality of life, advanced nursing practice, and presented future direction for research. The experience of living on the edge was explored with humankind living within the frontier of the American west
