    Trustworthy Knowledge Planes For Federated Distributed Systems

    In federated distributed systems, such as the Internet and the public cloud, the constituent systems can differ in their configuration and provisioning, resulting in significant impacts on the performance, robustness, and security of applications. Yet these systems lack support for distinguishing such characteristics, resulting in uninformed service selection and poor inter-operator coordination. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a trustworthy knowledge plane that can determine such characteristics about autonomous networks on the Internet. A knowledge plane collects the state of network devices and participants. Using this state, applications infer whether a network possesses some characteristic of interest. The knowledge plane uses attestation to attribute state descriptions to the principals that generated them, thereby making the results of inference more trustworthy. Trustworthy knowledge planes enable applications to establish stronger assumptions about their network operating environment, resulting in improved robustness and reduced deployment barriers. We have prototyped the knowledge plane and associated devices. Experience with deploying analyses over production networks demonstrate that knowledge planes impose low cost and can scale to support Internet-scale networks

    Co-adaptive control strategies in assistive Brain-Machine Interfaces

    A large number of people with severe motor disabilities cannot access any of the available control inputs of current assistive products, which typically rely on residual motor functions. These patients are therefore unable to fully benefit from existent assistive technologies, including communication interfaces and assistive robotics. In this context, electroencephalography-based Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs) offer a potential non-invasive solution to exploit a non-muscular channel for communication and control of assistive robotic devices, such as a wheelchair, a telepresence robot, or a neuroprosthesis. Still, non-invasive BMIs currently suffer from limitations, such as lack of precision, robustness and comfort, which prevent their practical implementation in assistive technologies. The goal of this PhD research is to produce scientific and technical developments to advance the state of the art of assistive interfaces and service robotics based on BMI paradigms. Two main research paths to the design of effective control strategies were considered in this project. The first one is the design of hybrid systems, based on the combination of the BMI together with gaze control, which is a long-lasting motor function in many paralyzed patients. Such approach allows to increase the degrees of freedom available for the control. The second approach consists in the inclusion of adaptive techniques into the BMI design. This allows to transform robotic tools and devices into active assistants able to co-evolve with the user, and learn new rules of behavior to solve tasks, rather than passively executing external commands. Following these strategies, the contributions of this work can be categorized based on the typology of mental signal exploited for the control. These include: 1) the use of active signals for the development and implementation of hybrid eyetracking and BMI control policies, for both communication and control of robotic systems; 2) the exploitation of passive mental processes to increase the adaptability of an autonomous controller to the user\u2019s intention and psychophysiological state, in a reinforcement learning framework; 3) the integration of brain active and passive control signals, to achieve adaptation within the BMI architecture at the level of feature extraction and classification

    Effficient Graph-based Computation and Analytics

    With data explosion in many domains, such as social media, big code repository, Internet of Things (IoT), and inertial sensors, only 32% of data available to academic and industry is put to work, and the remaining 68% goes unleveraged. Moreover, people are facing an increasing number of obstacles concerning complex analytics on the sheer size of data, which include 1) how to perform dynamic graph analytics in a parallel and robust manner within a reasonable time? 2) How to conduct performance optimizations on a property graph representing and consisting of the semantics of code, data, and runtime systems for big data applications? 3) How to innovate neural graph approaches (ie, Transformer) to solve realistic research problems, such as automated program repair and inertial navigation? To tackle these problems, I present two efforts along this road: efficient graph-based computation and intelligent graph analytics. Specifically, I firstly propose two theory-based dynamic graph models to characterize temporal trends in large social media networks, then implement and optimize them atop Apache Spark GraphX to improve their performances. In addition, I investigate a semantics-aware optimization framework consisting of offline static analysis and online dynamic analysis on a property graph representing the skeleton of a data-intensive application, to interactively and semi-automatically assist programmers to scrutinize the performance problems camouflaged in the source code. In the design of intelligent graph-based algorithms, I innovate novel neural graph-based approaches with multi-task learning techniques to repair a broad range of programming bugs automatically, and also improve the accuracy of pedestrian navigation systems in only consideration of sensor data of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU, ie accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer). In this dissertation, I elaborate on the definitions of these research problems and leverage the knowledge of graph computation, program analysis, and deep learning techniques to seek solutions to them, followed by comprehensive comparisons with the state-of-the-art baselines and discussions on future research

    Nature-inspired survivability: Prey-inspired survivability countermeasures for cloud computing security challenges

    As cloud computing environments become complex, adversaries have become highly sophisticated and unpredictable. Moreover, they can easily increase attack power and persist longer before detection. Uncertain malicious actions, latent risks, Unobserved or Unobservable risks (UUURs) characterise this new threat domain. This thesis proposes prey-inspired survivability to address unpredictable security challenges borne out of UUURs. While survivability is a well-addressed phenomenon in non-extinct prey animals, applying prey survivability to cloud computing directly is challenging due to contradicting end goals. How to manage evolving survivability goals and requirements under contradicting environmental conditions adds to the challenges. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes a holistic taxonomy which integrate multiple and disparate perspectives of cloud security challenges. In addition, it proposes the TRIZ (Teorija Rezbenija Izobretatelskib Zadach) to derive prey-inspired solutions through resolving contradiction. First, it develops a 3-step process to facilitate interdomain transfer of concepts from nature to cloud. Moreover, TRIZ’s generic approach suggests specific solutions for cloud computing survivability. Then, the thesis presents the conceptual prey-inspired cloud computing survivability framework (Pi-CCSF), built upon TRIZ derived solutions. The framework run-time is pushed to the user-space to support evolving survivability design goals. Furthermore, a target-based decision-making technique (TBDM) is proposed to manage survivability decisions. To evaluate the prey-inspired survivability concept, Pi-CCSF simulator is developed and implemented. Evaluation results shows that escalating survivability actions improve the vitality of vulnerable and compromised virtual machines (VMs) by 5% and dramatically improve their overall survivability. Hypothesis testing conclusively supports the hypothesis that the escalation mechanisms can be applied to enhance the survivability of cloud computing systems. Numeric analysis of TBDM shows that by considering survivability preferences and attitudes (these directly impacts survivability actions), the TBDM method brings unpredictable survivability information closer to decision processes. This enables efficient execution of variable escalating survivability actions, which enables the Pi-CCSF’s decision system (DS) to focus upon decisions that achieve survivability outcomes under unpredictability imposed by UUUR
