Optimisation of adaptive localisation techniques for cognitive radio
Spectrum, environment and location awareness are key characteristics of cognitive radio (CR). Knowledge of a user’s location as well as the surrounding environment type may enhance various CR tasks, such as spectrum sensing, dynamic channel allocation and interference management. This dissertation deals with the optimisation of adaptive localisation techniques for CR. The first part entails the development and evaluation of an efficient bandwidth determination (BD) model, which is a key component of the cognitive positioning system. This bandwidth efficiency is achieved using the Cramer-Rao lower bound derivations for a single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) antenna scheme. The performances of the single-input-single-output (SISO) and SIMO BD models are compared using three different generalised environmental models, viz. rural, urban and suburban areas. In the case of all three scenarios, the results reveal a marked improvement in the bandwidth efficiency for a SIMO antenna positioning scheme, especially for the 1×3 urban case, where a 62% root mean square error (RMSE) improvement over the SISO system is observed. The second part of the dissertation involves the presentation of a multiband time-of arrival (TOA) positioning technique for CR. The RMSE positional accuracy is evaluated using a fixed and dynamic bandwidth availability model. In the case of the fixed bandwidth availability model, the multiband TOA positioning model is initially evaluated using the two-step maximum-likelihood (TSML) location estimation algorithm for a scenario where line-of-sight represents the dominant signal path. Thereafter, a more realistic dynamic bandwidth availability model has been proposed, which is based on data obtained from an ultra-high frequency spectrum occupancy measurement campaign. The RMSE performance is then verified using the non-linear least squares, linear least squares and TSML location estimation techniques, using five different bandwidths. The proposed multiband positioning model performs well in poor signal-to-noise ratio conditions (-10 dB to 0 dB) when compared to a single band TOA system. These results indicate the advantage of opportunistic TOA location estimation in a CR environment.Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2012.Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineeringunrestricte
Joint Communication and Positioning based on Channel Estimation
Mobile wireless communication systems have rapidly and globally become an integral part of everyday life and have brought forth the internet of things. With the evolution of mobile wireless communication systems, joint communication and positioning becomes increasingly important and enables a growing range of new applications. Humanity has already grown used to having access to multimedia data everywhere at every time and thereby employing all sorts of location-based services. Global navigation satellite systems can provide highly accurate positioning results whenever a line-of-sight path is available. Unfortunately, harsh physical environments are known to degrade the performance of existing systems. Therefore, ground-based systems can assist the existing position estimation gained by satellite systems. Determining positioning-relevant information from a unified signal structure designed for a ground-based joint communication and positioning system can either complement existing systems or substitute them. Such a system framework promises to enhance the existing systems by enabling a highly accurate and reliable positioning performance and increased coverage. Furthermore, the unified signal structure yields synergetic effects. In this thesis, I propose a channel estimation-based joint communication and positioning system that employs a virtual training matrix. This matrix consists of a relatively small training percentage, plus the detected communication data itself. Via a core semi- blind estimation approach, this iteratively includes the already detected data to accurately determine the positioning-relevant parameter, by mutually exchanging information between the communication part and the positioning part of the receiver. Synergy is created. I propose a generalized system framework, suitable to be used in conjunction with various communication system techniques. The most critical positioning-relevant parameter, the time-of-arrival, is part of a physical multipath parameter vector. Estimating the time-of-arrival, therefore, means solving a global, non-linear, multi-dimensional optimization problem. More precisely, it means solving the so-called inverse problem. I thoroughly assess various problem formulations and variations thereof, including several different measurements and estimation algorithms. A significant challenge, when it comes to solving the inverse problem to determine the positioning-relevant path parameters, is imposed by realistic multipath channels. Most parameter estimation algorithms have proven to perform well in moderate multipath environments. It is mathematically straightforward to optimize this performance in the sense that the number of observations has to exceed the number of parameters to be estimated. The typical parameter estimation problem, on the other hand, is based on channel estimates, and it assumes that so-called snapshot measurements are available. In the case of realistic channel models, however, the number of observations does not necessarily exceed the number of unknowns. In this thesis, I overcome this problem, proposing a method to reduce the problem dimensionality via joint model order selection and parameter estimation. Employing the approximated and estimated parameter covariance matrix inherently constrains the estimation problem’s model order selection to result in optimal parameter estimation performance and hence optimal positioning performance. To compare these results with the optimally achievable solution, I introduce a focused order-related lower bound in this thesis. Additionally, I use soft information as a weighting matrix to enhance the positioning algorithm positioning performance. For demonstrating the feasibility and the interplay of the proposed system components, I utilize a prototype system, based on multi-layer interleave division multiple access. This proposed system framework and the investigated techniques can be employed for multiple existing systems or build the basis for future joint communication and positioning systems. The assessed estimation algorithms are transferrable to all kinds of joint communication and positioning system designs. This thesis demonstrates their capability to, in principle, successfully cope with challenging estimation problems stemming from harsh physical environments
SPECTRUM SENSING AND COOPERATION IN COGNITIVE-OFDM BASED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
The world has witnessed the development of many wireless systems and
applications. In addition to the large number of existing devices, such development of
new and advanced wireless systems increases rapidly the demand for more radio
spectrum. The radio spectrum is a limited natural resource; however, it has been
observed that it is not efficiently utilized. Consequently, different dynamic spectrum
access techniques have been proposed as solutions for such an inefficient use of the
spectrum. Cognitive Radio (CR) is a promising intelligent technology that can identify
the unoccupied portions of spectrum and opportunistically uses those portions with
satisfyingly high capacity and low interference to the primary users (i.e., licensed users).
The CR can be distinguished from the classical radio systems mainly by its awareness
about its surrounding radio frequency environment. The spectrum sensing task is the
main key for such awareness. Due to many advantages, Orthogonal Frequency Division
Multiplexing system (OFDM) has been proposed as a potential candidate for the CR‟s
physical layer. Additionally, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) in an OFDM receiver
supports the performance of a wide band spectrum analysis. Multitaper spectrum
estimation method (MTM) is a non-coherent promising spectrum sensing technique. It
tolerates problems related to bad biasing and large variance of power estimates.
This thesis focuses, generally, on the local, multi antenna based, and global
cooperative spectrum sensing techniques at physical layer in OFDM-based CR systems.
It starts with an investigation on the performance of using MTM and MTM with
singular value decomposition in CR networks using simulation. The Optimal MTM
parameters are then found. The optimal MTM based detector theoretical formulae are
derived. Different optimal and suboptimal multi antenna based spectrum sensing
techniques are proposed to improve the local spectrum sensing performance. Finally, a
new concept of cooperative spectrum sensing is introduced, and new strategies are
proposed to optimize the hard cooperative spectrum sensing in CR networks.
The MTM performance is controlled by the half time bandwidth product and
number of tapers. In this thesis, such parameters have been optimized using Monte
Carlo simulation. The binary hypothesis test, here, is developed to ensure that the effect
of choosing optimum MTM parameters is based upon performance evaluation. The
results show how these optimal parameters give the highest performance with minimum
complexity when MTM is used locally at CR.
The optimal MTM based detector has been derived using Neyman-Pearson
criterion. That includes probabilities of detection, false alarm and misses detection
approximate derivations in different wireless environments. The threshold and number
of sensed samples controlling is based on this theoretical work.
In order to improve the local spectrum sensing performance at each CR, in the CR
network, multi antenna spectrum sensing techniques are proposed using MTM and
MTM with singular value decomposition in this thesis. The statistical theoretical
formulae of the proposed techniques are derived including the different probabilities.

The proposed techniques include optimal, that requires prior information about the
primary user signal, and two suboptimal multi antenna spectrum sensing techniques
having similar performances with different computation complexity; these do not need
prior information about the primary user signalling. The work here includes derivations
for the periodogram multi antenna case.
Finally, in hard cooperative spectrum sensing, the cooperation optimization is
necessary to improve the overall performance, and/or minimize the number of data to be
sent to the main CR-base station. In this thesis, a new optimization method based on
optimizing the number of locally sensed samples at each CR is proposed with two
different strategies. Furthermore, the different factors that affect the hard cooperative
spectrum sensing optimization are investigated and analysed and a new cooperation
scheme in spectrum sensing, the master node, is proposed.Ministry of Interior-Kingdom of Saudi Arabi
Resting state fMRI as a marker for progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease
The arc of progression in the most common neurological aiction known as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), is characterized by a prodromal stage of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI subjects have traditionally been diagnosed with a battery of cognitive tests, but in recent times two good biomarker predictors of incipient AD have been identied. The cerebrospinal uid levels of the protein residues amyloid-beta and phosphorylated tau can be quantied and directly relate to the imprint of associated pathologies in the brain. This work aims to elucidate the impact of tau- and amyloid-related pathologies on the functional networks of the brain, as gauged by a resting-state fMRI connectivity analysis. In this context, we aim to identify optimal model parameters that yield maximal contrast between subspecies of MCI and healthy controls, such as the most sensitive frequency interval for the Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) time-series and the resolution of whole-brain parcellation schemes. The connectivity analysis exposes the impact of biomarker pathology and outlines a tentative progression pattern, relating the decline of functional connectivity to increasingly pathological levels of biomarkers. A progression hypothesisis proposed, reviewing pattern progression in the light of neuronal communication breakdown and phase-lag. Furthermore, failure of key hubs are identied using graph theoretical centrality measures and the relative group separations with connectivity pattern is evaluated by means of support-vector machines. Relative healthy controls, MCI with non-pathological CSF levels of biomarkers exhibit a widespread pattern of reduced connectivity, likely due to a mix many dementia subtypes. MCI subjects with pathological amyloid CSF levels but normal values of tau, has a large set of failing links converg- ing on crucial network hubs: thalamus, caudate nucleus and putamen, and are additionally aected in key regions such as hippocampus. This nding supports the view of Alzheimer's progression in terms of global disconnection syndrome by failing hub regions. Furthermore, these patterns are man- ifested in relevant graph theoretical centrality measures. MCI with pathological levels of both CSF biomarkers produce the strongest contrast relative healthy controls, involving reduced connectivity beteween parietal and frontal areas, but also implicating areas linked with cognitive decline, such as hippocampus and posterior cingulate cortex. The similarity of this contrast to that of controls vs. Alzheimer's subjects, indicates the presence of a functional progression pattern with two biomarker levels. Our ndings merit further investigation of the biomarker progression line using larger cohorts further stratied with cognitive test scores
Design of a Simulator for Neonatal Multichannel EEG: Application to Time-Frequency Approaches for Automatic Artifact Removal and Seizure Detection
The electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to noninvasively monitor brain activities; it is the most utilized tool to detect abnormalities such as seizures.
In recent studies, detection of neonatal EEG seizures has been automated to assist neurophysiologists in diagnosing EEG as manual detection is time consuming and subjective; however it still lacks the necessary robustness that is required for clinical implementation. Moreover, as EEG is intended to record the cerebral activities, extra-cerebral activities external to the brain are also recorded; these are called “artifacts” and can seriously degrade the accuracy of seizure detection.
Seizures are one of the most common neurologic problems managed by hospitals occurring in 0.1%-0.5% livebirths. Neonates with seizures are at higher risk for mortality and are reported to be 55-70 times more likely to have severe cerebral-palsy. Therefore, early and accurate detection of neonatal seizures is important to prevent long-term neurological damage.
Several attempts in modelling the neonatal EEG and artifacts have been done, but most did not consider the multichannel case. Furthermore, these models were used to test artifact or seizure detection separately, but not together. This study aims to design synthetic models that generate clean or corrupted multichannel EEG to test the accuracy of available artifact and seizure detection algorithms in a controlled environment.
In this thesis, synthetic neonatal EEG model is constructed by using; single-channel EEG simulators, head model, 21-electrodes, and propagation equations, to produce clean multichannel EEG. Furthermore, neonatal EEG artifact model is designed using synthetic signals to corrupt EEG waveforms. After that, an automated EEG artifact detection and removal system is designed in both time and time-frequency domains. Artifact detection is optimised and removal performance is evaluated. Finally, an automated seizure detection technique is developed, utilising fused and extended multichannel features along a cross-validated SVM classifier.
Results show that the synthetic EEG model mimics real neonatal EEG with 0.62 average correlation, and corrupted-EEG can degrade seizure detection average accuracy from 100% to 70.9%. They also show that using artifact detection and removal enhances the average accuracy to 89.6%, and utilising the extended features enhances it to 97.4% and strengthened its robustness.لمراقبة ورصد أنشطة واشارات المخ، دون الحاجة لأي عملیات (EEG) یستخدم الرسم أو التخطیط الكھربائي للدماغ

Adaptive Coded Modulation Classification and Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems. Adaptive Coded Modulation Techniques for Cognitive Radio Using Kalman Filter and Interacting Multiple Model Methods
The current and future trends of modern wireless communication systems place heavy demands on fast data transmissions in order to satisfy end users’ requirements anytime, anywhere. Such demands are obvious in recent applications such as smart phones, long term evolution (LTE), 4 & 5 Generations (4G & 5G), and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) platforms, where robust coding and modulations are essential especially in streaming on-line video material, social media and gaming. This eventually resulted in extreme exhaustion imposed on the frequency spectrum as a rare natural resource due to stagnation in current spectrum management policies. Since its advent in the late 1990s, cognitive radio (CR) has been conceived as an enabling technology aiming at the efficient utilisation of frequency spectrum that can lead to potential direct spectrum access (DSA) management. This is mainly attributed to its internal capabilities inherited from the concept of software defined radio (SDR) to sniff its surroundings, learn and adapt its operational parameters accordingly. CR systems (CRs) may commonly comprise one or all of the following core engines that characterise their architectures; namely, adaptive coded modulation (ACM), automatic modulation classification (AMC) and spectrum sensing (SS).
Motivated by the above challenges, this programme of research is primarily aimed at the design and development of new paradigms to help improve the adaptability of CRs and thereby achieve the desirable signal processing tasks at the physical layer of the above core engines. Approximate modelling of Rayleigh and finite state Markov channels (FSMC) with a new concept borrowed from econometric studies have been approached. Then insightful channel estimation by using Kalman filter (KF) augmented with interacting multiple model (IMM) has been examined for the purpose of robust adaptability, which is applied for the first time in wireless communication systems. Such new IMM-KF combination has been facilitated in the feedback channel between wireless transmitter and receiver to adjust the transmitted power, by using a water-filling (WF) technique, and constellation pattern and rate in the ACM algorithm. The AMC has also benefited from such IMM-KF integration to boost the performance against conventional parametric estimation methods such as maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for channel interrogation and the estimated parameters of both inserted into the ML classification algorithm. Expectation-maximisation (EM) has been applied to examine unknown transmitted modulation sequences and channel parameters in tandem. Finally, the non-parametric multitaper method (MTM) has been thoroughly examined for spectrum estimation (SE) and SS, by relying on Neyman-Pearson (NP) detection principle for hypothesis test, to allow licensed primary users (PUs) to coexist with opportunistic unlicensed secondary users (SUs) in the same frequency bands of interest without harmful effects. The performance of the above newly suggested paradigms have been simulated and assessed under various transmission settings and revealed substantial improvements
