    Lift EVERY Voice and Sing: An Intersectional Qualitative Study Examining the Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Faculty and Administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

    While there is minimal literature that address the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans* identified students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the experiences of Black, queer faculty and administrators at HBCUs has not been studied. This intersectional qualitative research study focused on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer identified faculty and administrators who work at HBCUs. By investigating the intersections of religion, race, gender, and sexuality within a predominantly Black institution, this study aims to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at HBCUs by sharing the experiences of the LGBQ faculty and administrators that previously or currently work at an HBCU as a full-time employee. The research questions that guided this study were 1) How have LGBQ faculty and staff negotiated/navigated their careers at HBCUs? and 2) How do LGBQ faculty and staff at HBCUs influence cultural (relating to LGBQ inclusion) change at the organizational level? The main theoretical framework used was intersectionality and it shaped the chosen methodology and methods. The Politics of Respectability was the second theoretical framework used to describe the intra-racial tensions within the Black/African American community. The study included 60-120 minute interviews with 12 participants. Using intersectionality as a guide, the data were coded and utilized for thematic analysis. Then, an ethnodramatic performance engages readers. The goals of this study were to encourage policy changes, promote inclusivity for LGBQ employees at HBCUs, and provide an expansion to the body of literature in the field pertaining to the experiences of LGBQ faculty and administrators in higher education

    Le rĂŽle d’un service dĂ©diĂ© Ă  l’analyse de la mĂ©tĂ©o routiĂšre est d’émettre des prĂ©visions et des avertissements aux usagers quant Ă  l’état de la chaussĂ©e, permettant ainsi d’anticiper les conditions de circulations dangereuses, notamment en pĂ©riode hivernale. Il est donc important de dĂ©finir l’état de chaussĂ©e en tout temps. L’objectif de ce projet est donc de dĂ©velopper un systĂšme de dĂ©tection multicapteurs automatisĂ©e pour la caractĂ©risation en temps rĂ©el des Ă©tats de surface de la chaussĂ©e (neige, glace, humide, sec). Ce mĂ©moire se focalise donc sur le dĂ©veloppement d’une mĂ©thode de fusion de donnĂ©es images et sons par apprentissage profond basĂ©e sur la thĂ©orie de Dempster-Shafer. Les mesures directes pour l’acquisition des donnĂ©es qui ont servi Ă  l’entrainement du modĂšle de fusion ont Ă©tĂ© effectuĂ©es Ă  l’aide de deux capteurs Ă  faible coĂ»t disponibles dans le commerce. Le premier capteur est une camĂ©ra pour enregistrer des vidĂ©os de la surface de la route. Le second capteur est un microphone pour enregistrer le bruit de l’interaction pneu-chaussĂ©e qui caractĂ©rise chaque Ă©tat de surface. La finalitĂ© de ce systĂšme est de pouvoir fonctionner sur un nano-ordinateur pour l’acquisition, le traitement et la diffusion de l’information en temps rĂ©el afin d’avertir les services d’entretien routier ainsi que les usagers de la route. De façon prĂ©cise, le systĂšme se prĂ©sente comme suit :1) une architecture d’apprentissage profond classifiant chaque Ă©tat de surface Ă  partir des images issues de la vidĂ©o sous forme de probabilitĂ©s ; 2) une architecture d’apprentissage profond classifiant chaque Ă©tat de surface Ă  partir du son sous forme de probabilitĂ©s ; 3) les probabilitĂ©s issues de chaque architecture ont Ă©tĂ© ensuite introduites dans le modĂšle de fusion pour obtenir la dĂ©cision finale. Afin que le systĂšme soit lĂ©ger et moins coĂ»teux, il a Ă©tĂ© dĂ©veloppĂ© Ă  partir d’architectures alliant lĂ©gĂšretĂ© et prĂ©cision Ă  savoir Squeeznet pour les images et M5 pour le son. Lors de la validation, le systĂšme a dĂ©montrĂ© une bonne performance pour la dĂ©tection des Ă©tats surface avec notamment 87,9 % pour la glace noire et 97 % pour la neige fondante

    If there is a theme running through the Message Covid-19 special issue, it is one of caring. Of our own and others’ resilience and wellbeing, of friendship and community, of students, practitioners and their futures, of social justice, equality and of doing the right thing. The veins of designing with care run through the edition, wide and deep. It captures, not designers as heroes, but those with humble views, exposing the need to understand a diversity of perspectives when trying to comprehend the complexity that Covid-19 continues to generate. As graphic designers, illustrators and visual communicators, contributors have created, documented, written, visualised, reflected, shared, connected and co-created, designed for good causes and re-defined what it is to be a student, an academic and a designer during the pandemic. This poignant period in time has driven us, through isolation, towards new rules of living, and new ways of working; to see and map the world in a different light. A light that is uncertain, disjointed, and constantly being redefined. This Message issue captures responses from the graphic communication design community in their raw state, to allow contributors to communicate their experiences through both their written and visual voice. Thus, the reader can discern as much from the words as the design and visualisations. Through this issue a substantial number of contributions have focused on personal reflection, isolation, fear, anxiety and wellbeing, as well as reaching out to community, making connections and collaborating. This was not surprising in a world in which connection with others has often been remote, and where ‘normal’ social structures of support and care have been broken down. We also gain insight into those who are using graphic communication design to inspire and capture new ways of teaching and learning, developing themselves as designers, educators, and activists, responding to social justice and to do good; gaining greater insight into society, government actions and conspiracy.     Towards a sociology of conspiracy theories: An investigation into conspiratorial thinking on Dönmes

    This thesis investigates the social and political significance of conspiracy theories, which has been an academically neglected topic despite its historical relevance. The academic literature focuses on the methodology, social significance and political impacts of these theories in a secluded manner and lacks empirical analyses. In response, this research provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for conspiracy theories by considering their methodology, political impacts and social significance in the light of empirical data. Theoretically, the thesis uses Adorno's semi-erudition theory along with Girardian approach. It proposes that conspiracy theories are methodologically semi-erudite narratives, i.e. they are biased in favour of a belief and use reason only to prove it. It suggests that conspiracy theories appear in times of power vacuum and provide semi-erudite cognitive maps that relieve alienation and ontological insecurities of people and groups. In so doing, they enforce social control over their audience due to their essentialist, closed-to-interpretation narratives. In order to verify the theory, the study analyses empirically the social and political significance of conspiracy theories about the Dönme community in Turkey. The analysis comprises interviews with conspiracy theorists, conspiracy theory readers and political parties, alongside a frame analysis of the popular conspiracy theory books on Dönmes. These confirm the theoretical framework by showing that the conspiracy theories are fed by the ontological insecurities of Turkish society. Hence, conspiracy theorists, most readers and some political parties respond to their own ontological insecurities and political frustrations through scapegoating Dönmes. Consequently, this work shows that conspiracy theories are important symptoms of society, which, while relieving ontological insecurities, do not provide politically prolific narratives

    Embodying entrepreneurship: everyday practices, processes and routines in a technology incubator

    The growing interest in the processes and practices of entrepreneurship has been dominated by a consideration of temporality. Through a thirty-six-month ethnography of a technology incubator, this thesis contributes to extant understanding by exploring the effect of space. The first paper explores how class structures from the surrounding city have appropriated entrepreneurship within the incubator. The second paper adopts a more explicitly spatial analysis to reveal how the use of space influences a common understanding of entrepreneurship. The final paper looks more closely at the entrepreneurs within the incubator and how they use visual symbols to develop their identity. Taken together, the three papers reject the notion of entrepreneurship as a primarily economic endeavour as articulated through commonly understood language and propose entrepreneuring as an enigmatic attractor that is accessed through the ambiguity of the non-verbal to develop the ‘new’. The thesis therefore contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurship and proposes a distinct role for the non-verbal in that understanding

    The media is constructed and interpreted through what people 'know'. That knowledge is, forthe most part, created through day to day experiences. In Pakistan, Islam and nationalism aretwo components of this social knowledge which are intrinsically tied to the experiences of thePakistani people. Censorship and selection are means through which this knowledge isarticulated and interpreted.General conceptions of partially shared large scale bodies of knowledge and ideas reinforce,and are reinforced by, general medium of mass communication: the print and electronic media.Focusing on the govermnent, media institutions and Pakistani elites, I describe and analyse thedifferent, sometimes conflicting, interpretations of Islam and Pakistani nationalism manifest inand through media productions presented in Pakistan.The media means many things, not least of which is power. It is the media as a source ofpower that is so frequently controlled, directed and manipulated. The terminology may beslightly different according to the context within which one is talking - propaganda, selection,etc. - but ultimately it comes down to the same thing - censorship. Each of the three groups:government, media institutions and Pakistani elites - have the power to interpret and censormedia content and consideration must be taken of each of the other power holders consequentlyrestricting the power of each group in relation to the other two. The processes of thismanipulation and their consequences form the major themes of this thesis

    Student Assessment Scholars took on the Library Services stakeholder proposal. Their goal was to find how students use the service available from Lindenwood Universities Library. Through evidence, it was found that students have a positive sentiment towards the Lindenwood’s Library Services. That the Students want longer hours, better marketing, and find one of the best services being the building itself. Lindenwood Universities Library Services are similar to the other schools in the athletic conference. Lindenwood University houses a Maker Lab, Career Services, and technology rentals like the other universities, but Lindenwood students were not aware of them. Overall, students were happy with the library\u27s services and wanted their ability to use the services to be extended. The LARC is currently open 78 hours a week and the average of the other school’s library hours is 92. To compete with other schools in the athletic conference and increase students use and satisfaction of Library Services, they should first work towards extending their hours

    It is commonly believed that considering nature different from us, human beings (qua rational, cultural, religious and social actors), is detrimental to our engagement for the preservation of nature. An obvious example is animal rights, a deep concern for all living beings, including non-human living creatures, which is understandable only if we approach nature, without fearing it, as something which should remain outside of our true home. “Walking with the earth” aims at questioning any similar preconceptions in the wide sense, including allegoric-poetic contributions. We invited 14 authors from 4 continents to express all sorts of ways of saying why caring is so important, why togetherness, being-with each others, as a spiritual but also embodied ethics is important in a divided world
