    Design and Implementation of a Mobile Library Management System for Improving Service Delivery

    A mobile library management system provides a more efficient way of managing library processes and rendering effective library services irrespective of time and place. This research work aimed to develop a Mobile Library Management System for the Nile University of Nigeria Library to overcome the challenges that hinder the librarians from managing the library processes on the go. The android mobile library management system was developed using Android Studio, HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQLi database. Service Responsibility Table was used in eliciting and documenting the user’s requirements for the library management system. The proposed Android-based mobile library system was evaluated through a survey by the librarians. The evaluation has shown that the proposed system is capable of complementing the existing library management systems

    This paper illustrates ten lightweight SA&D tools that could support initial deliberations about system requirements and subsequent sanity checking for high-level designs and for proposed functions and features. The tools are as relevant to agile development as to other approaches related to work systems in organizations. A brief introduction to the work system perspective leads to a section that illustrates ten SA&D tools based directly on work system theory or its extensions. The tools are applied to the same situation, a hiring system at a technical firm. These tools are not part of established SA&D pedagogy or practice. This paper’s ideas provide a context for comparing the focus of established SA&D methods and tools with a broader view of SA&D that engages managers and other business professionals more fully

    One of the most widely researched questions about higher education focuses on exposing paths that lead to academic success. This dissertation provides a tool aligned with the scientific contributions to the concept of success in higher education, as well as the implementation of a system capable of automatic generation of SQL queries based on high level constraints. It includes the use of students' data contained in the ISCTE-IUL University Fénix system in a web application, to assist analyzes and researches. Providing relevant data for consultation can offer a differentiated explanation of the pathways of success in higher education and identify problems and failures to support more effective intervention measures later.Uma das questões mais discutidas sobre ensino superior foca a descoberta de caminhos e padrões que levem ao sucesso académico. Esta dissertação fornece uma ferramenta alinhada com as contribuições científicas em relação ao conceito de sucesso no ensino superior, bem como a implementação de um sistema capaz de gerar automaticamente consultas SQL com base em restrições de alto nível. Inclui o uso dos dados dos alunos contidos no sistema Fénix da Universidade ISCTE-IUL numa aplicação web, de forma a auxiliar análises e investigações.     In Pursuit of Systems Theories for Describing and Analyzing Systems in Organizations

    This research essay illustrates how the IS discipline might pursue systems theories with the goal of understanding IS in new ways, generating innovative and useful systems theories, and achieving more impact in the world. It discusses recent articles that compare different perspectives and expectations related to theories and theorizing in the IS discipline. It uses the term domain-specific systems theory (DSST) to accentuate the difference between general systems theory (GST) and specific systems theories. It provides examples illustrating how DSSTs can illuminate important concerns that variance and process perspectives do not address directly. It shows how work system theory (WST) and several of its extensions are DSSTs that provide useful lenses for understanding, analyzing, and theorizing about systems in organizations. It concludes by summarizing ways in which the IS discipline might welcome systems theories more wholeheartedly

    A REVIEW OF PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES OF USING MULTIPLE CONCEPTUAL MODELS

    Conceptual models are used to visualise, envisage, and communicate the requirements, structure, and behaviour of a system. Particularly, during design and analysis phases, a model can serve as a tool to recognise different components, elements, actors, and relationships involved in a system. However, as a domain becomes complex, multiple models are needed to capture different aspects of a system. Further, each conceptual model develops using different grammars, methods, and tools. Therefore, using multiple models to represent a complex system may result in several problems, and challenges. This research aims to identify, analyse, and classify the different problems and issues encountered when using multiple models during information systems analysis and design through a structured literature review. Several problems are identified and are classified into seven main categories based on their common characteristics. The results of this study may serve as a baseline information for researchers in further understand-ing different modelling approaches and how multiple models can be used in harmony and reduce risks and issues. Also, the list of problems gathered will give insights to professionals on which issues they may possibly encounter when inter-relating various models

    A method for mapping XML-based specifications between development methodologies

    The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is widely used by software engineers as the basis of analysis and design in software development. However, UML ignores human factors in the course of software development because of its strong emphasis on the internal structure and functionality of the application. This thesis presents a method of mapping human-computer interaction (HCI) requirement specifications generated by usability engineering (UE) methodologies (e.g. Putting Usability First (PUF)) into UML specifications. These two sets of requirement specification are specified, using Extensible Markup Language (XML) so that HCI requirement specifications can be integrated into UML ones. A Mapping Tool was developed to facilitate the creation of mappings between PUF XML tags and XMI tags. The Mapping Tool was used to create mappings between PUF and UML requirement specifications. This mapping process and its outputs were evaluated to demonstrate that the tool worked. The results of the evaluation show that the HCI requirement specification represented by the PUF XML tags can improve the UML specification by adding them into the XMI tags

    Defining Information Systems as Work Systems: Implications for the IS Field

    The lack of an agreed upon definition of information system is one of many obstacles troubling the academic information systems discipline. After listing a number of definitions of IS, this paper defines information system as a special case of work system as defined in Alter (1999a). This definition has many desirable characteristics: It is easy to understand; differentiates IS from IT; covers totally manual, partially automated, and totally automated information systems; links to a life cycle model that generates many insights about development and implementation problems; provides a simple guideline that helps in interpreting common IS/IT jargon; and has other useful implications related to IS concepts, IS terminology, and the analysis and design of information systems. The paper presents the proposed IS definition and evaluates the definition in terms of simplicity, clarity, scope, systematic power, explanatory power, validity, reliability, and fruitfulness. An Appendix summarizes previously published concepts and two frameworks that flow from the proposed definition and are useful for appreciating many points in the evaluation section

Nowadays information systems represent an essential part of the education sector in many universities. In particular, the increasing of the number of students in higher education in Portugal leads to the progressive increase of student’s data contained in institutional information systems. This article aims to include the use of student data contained in the Fénix information system of a Portuguese higher educational institution, turning their information in an internal tool, to assist analysis and studies of internal academic success. Providing relevant data for queries can offer a clearer explanation of the paths to success in higher education.
