    Extraction of Projection Profile, Run-Histogram and Entropy Features Straight from Run-Length Compressed Text-Documents

    Document Image Analysis, like any Digital Image Analysis requires identification and extraction of proper features, which are generally extracted from uncompressed images, though in reality images are made available in compressed form for the reasons such as transmission and storage efficiency. However, this implies that the compressed image should be decompressed, which indents additional computing resources. This limitation induces the motivation to research in extracting features directly from the compressed image. In this research, we propose to extract essential features such as projection profile, run-histogram and entropy for text document analysis directly from run-length compressed text-documents. The experimentation illustrates that features are extracted directly from the compressed image without going through the stage of decompression, because of which the computing time is reduced.     Statistics Oriented Preprocessing of Document Image

    Old printed documents represent an important part of our cultural heritage. Their digitalization plays an important role in creating data and metadata. The paper proposed an algorithm for estimation of the global text skew. First, document image is binarized reducing the impact of noise and uneven illumination. The binary image is statistically analyzed and processed. Accordingly, redundant data have been excluded. Furthermore, the convex hulls are established encircling each text object. They are joined establishing connected components. Then, the connected components in complementary image are enlarged with morphological dilation. At the end, the biggest connected component is extracted. Its orientation is similar to the global orientation of text document which is calculated by the moments. Efficiency and correctness of the algorithm are verified by testing on a custom dataset

    Component-based Segmentation of words from handwritten Arabic text

    Efficient preprocessing is very essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this paper, techniques on segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Firstly, connected components (ccs) are extracted, and distances among different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of this distance is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for words segmentation. Meanwhile, an improved projection based method is also employed for baseline detection. The proposed method has been successfully tested on IFN/ENIT database consisting of 26459 Arabic words handwritten by 411 different writers, and the results were promising and very encouraging in more accurate detection of the baseline and segmentation of words for further recognition

    AbstractIn computer vision, segmentation is the process of partitioning a digital image into multiple segments (sets of pixels). Image segmentation is thus inevitable. Segmentation used for text-based images aim in retrieval of specific information from the entire image. This information can be a line or a word or even a character. This paper proposes various methodologies to segment a text based image at various levels of segmentation. This material serves as a guide and update for readers working on the text based segmentation area of Computer Vision. First, the need for segmentation is justified in the context of text based information retrieval. Then, the various factors affecting the segmentation process are discussed. Followed by the levels of text segmentation are explored. Finally, the available techniques with their superiorities and weaknesses are reviewed, along with directions for quick referral are suggested. Special attention is given to the handwriting recognition since this area requires more advanced techniques for efficient information extraction and to reach the ultimate goal of machine simulation of human reading

    A New Weighted Region-based Hough Transform Algorithm for Robust Line Detection in Poor Quality Images of 2D Lattices of Rectangular Objects

    In this work we present a novel kernel-based Hough Transform method for robust line detection in poor quality images of 2D lattices of rectangular objects. Following a preprocessing stage that specifies the connected regions of the image, the proposed method uses a kernel to specify each region's voting strength based on the following shape descriptors: a) its rectangularity, b) the orientation of the major side of its minimum area bounding rectangle (MBR), and c) the MBR's geometrical center. Experimental and theoretical analysis on the uncertainties associated with the geometrical center as well as the polar parameters of the MBR's major axis line equation allows for automatic selection of the parameters used to specify the shape of the kernel's footstep on the accumulator array. Comparisons performed on images of building facades taken under impaired visual conditions or with low accuracy sensors (e.g. thermal images) between the proposed method and other Hough Transform algorithms, show an improved accuracy of our method in detecting lines and/or linear formations. Finally, the robustness of the proposed method is shown in two other application domains those of, façade image rectification and skew detection and correction in rotated scanned documents
