Using function approximation for personalized point-of-interest recommendation
Point-of-interest (POI) recommender system encourages users to share their locations and social experience through check-ins in online location-based social networks. A most recent algorithm for POI recommendation takes into account both the location relevance and diversity. The relevance measures usersā personal preference while the diversity considers location categories. There exists a dilemma of weighting these two factors in the recommendation. The location diversity is weighted more when a user is new to a city and expects to explore the city in the new visit. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically adjust the weights according to userās personal preference. We focus on investigating a function between the number of location categories and a weight value for each user, where the Chebyshev polynomial approximation method using binary values is applied. We further improve the approximation by exploring similar behavior of users within a location category. We conduct experiments on five real-world datasets, and show that the new approach can make a good balance of weighting the two factors therefore providing better recommendation
Top-k Route Search through Submodularity Modeling of Recurrent POI Features
We consider a practical top-k route search problem: given a collection of
points of interest (POIs) with rated features and traveling costs between POIs,
a user wants to find k routes from a source to a destination and limited in a
cost budget, that maximally match her needs on feature preferences. One
challenge is dealing with the personalized diversity requirement where users
have various trade-off between quantity (the number of POIs with a specified
feature) and variety (the coverage of specified features). Another challenge is
the large scale of the POI map and the great many alternative routes to search.
We model the personalized diversity requirement by the whole class of
submodular functions, and present an optimal solution to the top-k route search
problem through indices for retrieving relevant POIs in both feature and route
spaces and various strategies for pruning the search space using user
preferences and constraints. We also present promising heuristic solutions and
evaluate all the solutions on real life data.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 table
LambdaFM: Learning Optimal Ranking with Factorization Machines Using Lambda Surrogates
State-of-the-art item recommendation algorithms, which apply
Factorization Machines (FM) as a scoring function and
pairwise ranking loss as a trainer (PRFM for short), have
been recently investigated for the implicit feedback based
context-aware recommendation problem (IFCAR). However,
good recommenders particularly emphasize on the accuracy
near the top of the ranked list, and typical pairwise loss functions
might not match well with such a requirement. In this
paper, we demonstrate, both theoretically and empirically,
PRFM models usually lead to non-optimal item recommendation
results due to such a mismatch. Inspired by the success
of LambdaRank, we introduce Lambda Factorization
Machines (LambdaFM), which is particularly intended for
optimizing ranking performance for IFCAR. We also point
out that the original lambda function suffers from the issue
of expensive computational complexity in such settings due
to a large amount of unobserved feedback. Hence, instead
of directly adopting the original lambda strategy, we create
three effective lambda surrogates by conducting a theoretical
analysis for lambda from the top-N optimization perspective.
Further, we prove that the proposed lambda surrogates
are generic and applicable to a large set of pairwise
ranking loss functions. Experimental results demonstrate
LambdaFM significantly outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms
on three real-world datasets in terms of four standard
ranking measures
