Adaptive Resonance Theory: Self-Organizing Networks for Stable Learning, Recognition, and Prediction
Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) is a neural theory of human and primate information processing and of adaptive pattern recognition and prediction for technology. Biological applications to attentive learning of visual recognition categories by inferotemporal cortex and hippocampal system, medial temporal amnesia, corticogeniculate synchronization, auditory streaming, speech recognition, and eye movement control are noted. ARTMAP systems for technology integrate neural networks, fuzzy logic, and expert production systems to carry out both unsupervised and supervised learning. Fast and slow learning are both stable response to large non stationary databases. Match tracking search conjointly maximizes learned compression while minimizing predictive error. Spatial and temporal evidence accumulation improve accuracy in 3-D object recognition. Group-level Emotion Recognition using Transfer Learning from Face Identification
In this paper, we describe our algorithmic approach, which was used for
submissions in the fifth Emotion Recognition in the Wild (EmotiW 2017)
group-level emotion recognition sub-challenge. We extracted feature vectors of
detected faces using the Convolutional Neural Network trained for face
identification task, rather than traditional pre-training on emotion
recognition problems. In the final pipeline an ensemble of Random Forest
classifiers was learned to predict emotion score using available training set.
In case when the faces have not been detected, one member of our ensemble
extracts features from the whole image. During our experimental study, the
proposed approach showed the lowest error rate when compared to other explored
techniques. In particular, we achieved 75.4% accuracy on the validation data,
which is 20% higher than the handcrafted feature-based baseline. The source

Conjunctive Visual and Auditory Development via Real-Time Dialogue
Human developmental learning is capable of
dealing with the dynamic visual world, speech-based
dialogue, and their complex real-time association.
However, the architecture that realizes
this for robotic cognitive development has
not been reported in the past. This paper takes
up this challenge. The proposed architecture does
not require a strict coupling between visual and
auditory stimuli. Two major operations contribute
to the “abstraction” process: multiscale temporal
priming and high-dimensional numeric abstraction
through internal responses with reduced variance.
As a basic principle of developmental learning,
the programmer does not know the nature
of the world events at the time of programming
and, thus, hand-designed task-specific representation
is not possible. We successfully tested the
architecture on the SAIL robot under an unprecedented
challenging multimodal interaction mode:
use real-time speech dialogue as a teaching source
for simultaneous and incremental visual learning
and language acquisition, while the robot is viewing
a dynamic world that contains a rotating object
to which the dialogue is referring
Spatial Endogenous Fire Risk and Efficient Fuel Management and Timber Harvest
This paper integrates a spatial fire behavior model and a stochastic dynamic optimization model to determine the optimal spatial pattern of fuel management and timber harvest. Each years fire season causes the loss of forest values and lives in the western US. This paper uses a multi-plot analysis and incorporates uncertainty about fire ignition locations and weather conditions to inform policy by examining the role of spatial endogenous risk - where management actions on one stand affect fire risk in that and adjacent stands.
