    Into the night : evaluating sleep as a measure of animal welfare

    There is a need for a simple non-invasive measure of animal welfare. In humans, sleep quality correlates strongly with a person’s wellbeing; this suggests that sleep may also prove to be a suitable tool to measure mammals’ welfare. Studies in humans have shown that lack of sleep compromises the health of individuals, causing heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and even cancer. Likewise, research conducted with shift workers demonstrated they are more likely to develop such diseases but are also more susceptible to psychological conditions such as depression. Considering humans and mammals have similar physiology and sleeping patterns, disturbances in mammals’ natural sleeping cycles could have similar outcomes. Our model system to examine this is the domestic dog. This system was chosen because dogs are a well-studied species regarding their physiology and have been used as a model in human sleep studies. They also co-exist with humans which gives us insight on their environment. This thesis presents the results of a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate sleep as a measure of animal welfare in domestic dogs. Firstly, trough behavioural observations, the sleep structure of kenneled dogs was investigated and after finding the dogs had an altered sleep architecture and highly fragmented sleep in the surveyed environment, we then verified the impact of sleep loss in other behaviours. Secondly, using glucocorticoids levels and assessing environmental variables such as temperature, light and sound levels, we evaluated how the environment along with stress responses can further compromise sleep and found important correlations between these measures. Thirdly, using wearable technology, dogs sleep, activity and health parameters (heart rate and respiration rate) were measured and results compared which sleep parameters, demonstrating remote sensing is a reliable technology and can provide further information on the effects of sleep loss in dogs. Lastly, an autonomous system was developed which combines deep leaning techniques (convolutional neural networks) with classical data processing methods to automatically detect and quantify dogs’ sleeping patterns and the results demonstrated it is an efficient tool to measure sleep and a practical solution to common problems associated with welfare research.Keywords: animal welfare, sleep behaviour, sleep quality, domestic dogs

    These proceedings contain the papers presented at Measuring Behavior 2018, the 11th International Conference on Methods and Techniques in Behavioral Research. The conference was organised by Manchester Metropolitan University, in collaboration with Noldus Information Technology. The conference was held during June 5th – 8th, 2018 in Manchester, UK. Building on the format that has emerged from previous meetings, we hosted a fascinating program about a wide variety of methodological aspects of the behavioral sciences. We had scientific presentations scheduled into seven general oral sessions and fifteen symposia, which covered a topical spread from rodent to human behavior. We had fourteen demonstrations, in which academics and companies demonstrated their latest prototypes. The scientific program also contained three workshops, one tutorial and a number of scientific discussion sessions. We also had scientific tours of our facilities at Manchester Metropolitan Univeristy, and the nearby British Cycling Velodrome. We hope this proceedings caters for many of your interests and we look forward to seeing and hearing more of your contributions

    This New Ocean: A History of Project Mercury

    When Congress created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958, it charged NASA with the responsibility "to contribute materially to . . . the expansion of human knowledge of phenomena in the atmosphere and space" and "provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof." NASA wisely interpreted this mandate to include responsibility for documenting the epochal progress of which it is the focus. The result has been the development of a historical program by NASA as unprecedented as the task of extending man's mobility beyond his planet. This volume is not only NASA's accounting of its obligation to disseminate information to our current generation of Americans. It also fulfills, as do all of NASA's future-oriented scientific-technological activities, the further obligation to document the present as the heritage of the future. The wide-ranging NASA history program includes chronicles of day-to-day space activities; specialized studies of particular fields within space science and technology; accounts of NASA's efforts in organization and management, where its innovations, while less known to the public than its more spectacular space shots, have also been of great significance; narratives of the growth and expansion of the space centers throughout the country, which represent in microcosm many aspects of NASA's total effort; program histories, tracing the successes- and failures- of the various projects that mark man's progress into the Space Age; and a history of NASA itself, incorporating in general terms the major problems and challenges, and the responses thereto, of our entire civilian space effort. The volume presented here is a program history, the first in a series telling of NASA's pioneering steps into the Space Age. It deals with the first American manned-spaceflight program: Project Mercury. Although some academicians might protest that this is "official" history, it is official only in the fact that it has been prepared and published with the support and cooperation of NASA. It is not "official" history in the sense of presenting a point of view supposedly that of NASA officialdom-if anyone could determine what the "point of view" of such a complex organism might be. Certainly, the authors were allowed to pursue their task with the fullest freedom and in accordance with the highest scholarly standards of the history profession

    Mobilization Protocols for Hybrid Sensors for Environmental AOP Sampling (HySEAS) Observations

    The protocols presented here enable the proper mobilization of the latest-generation instruments for measuring the apparent optical properties (AOPs) of aquatic ecosystems. The protocols are designed for the Hybrid Sensors for Environmental AOP Sampling (HySEAS) class of instruments, but are applicable to the community of practice for AOP measurements. The protocols are organized into eleven sections beyond an introductory overview: a) cables and connectors, b) HySEAS instruments, c) platform preparation, d) instrument installation, e) cable installation, f) test deployment, g) test recovery, h) maintenance, i) shipping, j) storage, and k) smallboat operations. Each section concentrates on documenting how to prevent the most likely faults, remedy them should they occur, and accomplishing both with the proper application of a modest set of useful tools. Within the twelve sections, there are Socratic exercises to stimulate thought, and the answers to these exercises appear in Appendix A. Frequently asked questions (FAQs) are summarized in a separate section after the answers to the exercises in Appendix B. For practitioners unfamiliar with the nautical terms used throughout this document plus others likely encountered at sea, an abbreviated dictionary of nautical terms appears in Appendix C. An abbreviated dictionary of radiotelephone terms is presented in Appendix D. To ensure familiarity with many of the tools that are presented, Appendix E provides a description of the tools alongside a thumbnail picture. Abbreviated deployment checklists and cable diagrams are provided in Appendix F. The document concludes with an acknowledgments section, a glossary of acronyms, a definition of symbols, and a list of references
