    Graph indexing and retrieval based on graph prototypes

    [ANGLÈS] Taking a query from a high number of data stored into a database, as fast as possible, is a recurrent problem in the field of computer sciences practically since its origins. At the existence of this problem, it’s necessary to add, moreover, the fact that actually databases contains data types of more diverse and unexpected character possible. Now we are not talking about originating databases which only contained sets of numbers or characters strings. (...) All that I want to make into the present work and I think that was achieved as far as possible, has been to develop and to present a methodology to carry out this process. The Metric Trees of prototypes are based on a well-known strategy, which is based on grouping the data stored in database at the smartest possible way. But also we has added the concept of a graph prototype. A structure that contains information of a set of instances represented by graphs, used until now for classification and recognition. In this thesis we have used graphs as representatives of elements that have to be queried in databases. Note that graphs have the capacity to represent complex objects, for this reason the number of graph databases is increasing. Due to in the literature appears different ways to build a prototype, the work presented here shows a comparative study between the main methods. Combining these two concepts, the Metric Tree and the graph prototype, we propose the construction of metric trees where the graph prototypes are routing nodes to help to decide the way to explore when we make a search in the tree. We have used Metric Trees to make classification and to find all instances that are lower than a maximum distance. Conjugant aquests dos conceptes, el de Metric Tree i el de prototip, plantejem la construcció d'arbres de cerca on els prototips siguin els nodes intermedis, que ens ajudin a decidir quin camí explorar quan volem fer una cerca sobre l'arbre. I utilitzant, aquests tant per a fer classificació com per a buscar totes les instàncies que estiguin una distància més petita d’una distància máxima. Tot això tenint present, que les dades amb que treballem són grafs, és a dir que la metodologia presentada, té la versatilitat de poder-se aplicar, a qualsevol tipus d'informació que es pugui representar d'aquesta manera.     Automatic Structural Scene Digitalization

    In this paper, we present an automatic system for the analysis and labeling of structural scenes, floor plan drawings in Computer-aided Design (CAD) format. The proposed system applies a fusion strategy to detect and recognize various components of CAD floor plans, such as walls, doors, windows and other ambiguous assets. Technically, a general rule-based filter parsing method is fist adopted to extract effective information from the original floor plan. Then, an image-processing based recovery method is employed to correct information extracted in the first step. Our proposed method is fully automatic and real-time. Such analysis system provides high accuracy and is also evaluated on a public website that, on average, archives more than ten thousands effective uses per day and reaches a relatively high satisfaction rate.Comment: paper submitted to PloS On

    Discovering Shape Classes using Tree Edit-Distance and Pairwise Clustering

    This paper describes work aimed at the unsupervised learning of shape-classes from shock trees. We commence by considering how to compute the edit distance between weighted trees. We show how to transform the tree edit distance problem into a series of maximum weight clique problems, and show how to use relaxation labeling to find an approximate solution. This allows us to compute a set of pairwise distances between graph-structures. We show how the edit distances can be used to compute a matrix of pairwise affinities using χ² statistics. We present a maximum likelihood method for clustering the graphs by iteratively updating the elements of the affinity matrix. This involves interleaved steps for updating the affinity matrix using an eigendecomposition method and updating the cluster membership indicators. We illustrate the new tree clustering framework on shock-graphs extracted from the silhouettes of 2D shapes

    Analyzing and Learning Movement Through Human-Computer Co-Creative Improvisation and Data Visualization

    Recent years have seen an incredible rise in the availability of household motion and video capture technologies, ranging from the humble webcam to the relatively sophisticated Kinect sensor. Naturally, this precipitated a rise in both the quantity and quality of motion capture data available on the internet. The wealth of data on the internet has caused a new interest in the field of motion data classification, the specific task of having a model classify and sort different clips of human motion. However, there is comparatively little work in the field of motion data clustering, which is an unsupervised field that may be more useful in the future as it allows for agents to recognize “categories” of motions without the need for user input or classified data. Systems that can cluster motion data focus more on “what type of motion data is this, and what is it similar to” rather than which motion is this. The LuminAI project, as described in this paper, is an example of a practical use for motion data clustering that allows the system to respond to user dance moves with a similar but different gesture. To analyze the efficacy and properties of this motion data clustering pipeline, we also propose a novel data visualization tool and the design considerations involved in its development.Undergraduat

    Vision Based Extraction of Nutrition Information from Skewed Nutrition Labels

    An important component of a healthy diet is the comprehension and retention of nutritional information and understanding of how different food items and nutritional constituents affect our bodies. In the U.S. and many other countries, nutritional information is primarily conveyed to consumers through nutrition labels (NLs) which can be found in all packaged food products. However, sometimes it becomes really challenging to utilize all this information available in these NLs even for consumers who are health conscious as they might not be familiar with nutritional terms or find it difficult to integrate nutritional data collection into their daily activities due to lack of time, motivation, or training. So it is essential to automate this data collection and interpretation process by integrating Computer Vision based algorithms to extract nutritional information from NLs because it improves the user’s ability to engage in continuous nutritional data collection and analysis. To make nutritional data collection more manageable and enjoyable for the users, we present a Proactive NUTrition Management System (PNUTS). PNUTS seeks to shift current research and clinical practices in nutrition management toward persuasion, automated nutritional information processing, and context-sensitive nutrition decision support. PNUTS consists of two modules, firstly a barcode scanning module which runs on smart phones and is capable of vision-based localization of One Dimensional (1D) Universal Product Code (UPC) and International Article Number (EAN) barcodes with relaxed pitch, roll, and yaw camera alignment constraints. The algorithm localizes barcodes in images by computing Dominant Orientations of Gradients (DOGs) of image segments and grouping smaller segments with similar DOGs into larger connected components. Connected components that pass given morphological criteria are marked as potential barcodes. The algorithm is implemented in a distributed, cloud-based system. The system’s front end is a smartphone application that runs on Android smartphones with Android 4.2 or higher. The system’s back end is deployed on a five node Linux cluster where images are processed. The algorithm was evaluated on a corpus of 7,545 images extracted from 506 videos of bags, bottles, boxes, and cans in a supermarket. The DOG algorithm was coupled to our in-place scanner for 1D UPC and EAN barcodes. The scanner receives from the DOG algorithm the rectangular planar dimensions of a connected component and the component’s dominant gradient orientation angle referred to as the skew angle. The scanner draws several scan lines at that skew angle within the component to recognize the barcode in place without any rotations. The scanner coupled to the localizer was tested on the same corpus of 7,545 images. Laboratory experiments indicate that the system can localize and scan barcodes of any orientation in the yaw plane, of up to 73.28 degrees in the pitch plane, and of up to 55.5 degrees in the roll plane. The videos have been made public for all interested research communities to replicate our findings or to use them in their own research. The front end Android application is available for free download at Google Play under the title of NutriGlass. This module is also coupled to a comprehensive NL database from which nutritional information can be retrieved on demand. Currently our NL database consists of more than 230,000 products. The second module of PNUTS is an algorithm whose objective is to determine the text skew angle of an NL image without constraining the angle’s magnitude. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal matrices of the (Two Dimensional) 2D Haar Wavelet Transform are used to identify 2D points with significant intensity changes. The set of points is bounded with a minimum area rectangle whose rotation angle is the text’s skew. The algorithm’s performance is compared with the performance of five text skew detection algorithms on 1001 U.S. nutrition label images and 2200 single- and multi-column document images in multiple languages. To ensure the reproducibility of the reported results, the source code of the algorithm and the image data have been made publicly available.     Matching hierarchical structures for shape recognition

    In this thesis we aim to develop a framework for clustering trees and rep- resenting and learning a generative model of graph structures from a set of training samples. The approach is applied to the problem of the recognition and classification of shape abstracted in terms of its morphological skeleton. We make five contributions. The first is an algorithm to approximate tree edit-distance using relaxation labeling. The second is the introduction of the tree union, a representation capable of representing the modes of structural variation present in a set of trees. The third is an information theoretic approach to learning a generative model of tree structures from a training set. While the skeletal abstraction of shape was chosen mainly as a exper- imental vehicle, we, nonetheless, make some contributions to the fields of skeleton extraction and its graph representation. In particular, our fourth contribution is the development of a skeletonization method that corrects curvature effects in the Hamilton-Jacobi framework, improving its localiza- tion and noise sensitivity. Finally, we propose a shape-measure capable of characterizing shapes abstracted in terms of their skeleton. This measure has a number of interesting properties. In particular, it varies smoothly as the shape is deformed and can be easily computed using the presented skeleton extraction algorithm.
