    Modeling Cyber-Physical Production Systems with SystemC-AMS

    The heterogeneous nature of SystemC-AMS makes it a perfect candidate solution to support Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPSs), i.e., systems that are characterized by a tight interaction of the cyber part with the surrounding physical world and with manufacturing production processes. Nonetheless, the support for the modeling of physical and mechanical dynamics typical of production machinery goes far beyond the initial application scenario of SystemC-AMS, thus limiting its effectiveness and adoption in the production and manufacturing context. This paper starts with an analysis of the current adoption of SystemC-AMS to highlight the open points that still limit its effectiveness, with the goal of pinpointing current issues and to propose solutions that could improve its effectiveness, and make SystemC-AMS an essential resource also in the new Industry 4.0 scenario

    On mixed abstraction, languages and simulation approach to refinement with SystemC AMS

    Executable specifications and simulations arecornerstone to system design flows. Complex mixed signalembedded systems can be specified with SystemC AMSwhich supports abstraction and extensible models of computation. The language contains semantics for moduleconnections and synchronization required in analog anddigital interaction. Through the synchronization layer, user defined models of computation, solvers and simulators can be unified in the SystemC AMS simulator for achieving low level abstraction and model refinement. These improvements assist in amplifying model aspects and their contribution to the overall system behavior. This work presents cosimulating refined models with timed data flow paradigm of SystemC AMS. The methodology uses Cbased interaction between simulators. An RTL model ofdata encryption standard is demonstrated as an example.The methodology is flexible and can be applied in earlydesign decision trade off, architecture experimentation and particularly for model refinement and critical behavior analysis

    A Holistic Approach to Functional Safety for Networked Cyber-Physical Systems

    Functional safety is a significant concern in today's networked cyber-physical systems such as connected machines, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent environments. Simulation is a well-known methodology for the assessment of functional safety. Simulation models of networked cyber-physical systems are very heterogeneous relying on digital hardware, analog hardware, and network domains. Current functional safety assessment is mainly focused on digital hardware failures while minor attention is devoted to analog hardware and not at all to the interconnecting network. In this work we believe that in networked cyber-physical systems, the dependability must be verified not only for the nodes in isolation but also by taking into account their interaction through the communication channel. For this reason, this work proposes a holistic methodology for simulation-based safety assessment in which safety mechanisms are tested in a simulation environment reproducing the high-level behavior of digital hardware, analog hardware, and network communication. The methodology relies on three main automatic processes: 1) abstraction of analog models to transform them into system-level descriptions, 2) synthesis of network infrastructures to combine multiple cyber-physical systems, and 3) multi-domain fault injection in digital, analog, and network. Ultimately, the flow produces a homogeneous optimized description written in C++ for fast and reliable simulation which can have many applications. The focus of this thesis is performing extensive fault simulation and evaluating different functional safety metrics, \eg, fault and diagnostic coverage of all the safety mechanisms

    A Cross-level Verification Methodology for Digital IPs Augmented with Embedded Timing Monitors

    Smart systems are characterized by the integration in a single device of multi-domain subsystems of different technological domains, namely, analog, digital, discrete and power devices, MEMS, and power sources. Such challenges, emerging from the heterogeneous nature of the whole system, combined with the traditional challenges of digital design, directly impact on performance and on propagation delay of digital components. This article proposes a design approach to enhance the RTL model of a given digital component for the integration in smart systems with the automatic insertion of delay sensors, which can detect and correct timing failures. The article then proposes a methodology to verify such added features at system level. The augmented model is abstracted to SystemC TLM, which is automatically injected with mutants (i.e., code mutations) to emulate delays and timing failures. The resulting TLM model is finally simulated to identify timing failures and to verify the correctness of the inserted delay monitors. Experimental results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed design and verification methodology, thanks to an efficient sensor-aware abstraction methodology, by applying the flow to three complex case studies

    Co-Emulation of Scan-Chain Based Designs Utilizing SCE-MI Infrastructure

    Simulation times of complex System-on-Chips (SoC) have grown exponentially as designs reach the multi-million ASIC gate range. Verification teams have adopted emulation as a prominent methodology, incorporating high-level testbenches and FPGA/ASIC hardware for system-level testing (SLT). In addition to SLT, emulation enables software teams to incorporate software applications with cycle-accurate hardware early on in the design cycle. The Standard for Co-Emulation Modeling Interface (SCE-MI) developed by the Accelera Initiative, is a widely used communication protocol for emulation which has been accepted by major electronic design automation (EDA) companies. Scan-chain is a design-for-test (DFT) methodology used for testing digital circuits. To allow more controllability and observability of the system, design registers are transformed into scan registers, allowing verification teams to shift in test vectors and observe the behavior of combinatorial logic. As SoC complexity increases, thousands of registers can be used in a design, which makes it difficult to implement full-scan testing. More so, as the complexity of the scan algorithm is dependent on the number of design registers, large SoC scan designs can no longer be verified in RTL simulation unless portioned into smaller sub-blocks. To complete a full scan cycle in RTL simulation for large system-level designs, it may take hours, days, or even weeks depending on the complexity of the circuit. This thesis proposes a methodology to decrease scan-chain verification time utilizing SCE-MI protocol and an FPGA-based emulation platform. A high-level (SystemC) testbench and FPGA synthesizable hardware transactor models are developed for the ISCAS89 S400 benchmark circuit for high-speed communication between the CPU workstation and FPGA emulator. The emulation results are compared to other verification methodologies, and found to be 82% faster than regular RTL simulation. In addition, the emulation runs in the MHz speed range, allowing the incorporation of software applications, drivers, and operating systems, as opposed to the Hz range in RTL simulation

    SystemC-AMS thermal modeling for the co-simulation of functional and extra-functional properties

    Temperature is a critical property of smart systems, due to its impact on reliability and to its inter-dependence with power consumption. Unfortunately, the current design flows evaluate thermal evolution ex-post, on offline power traces. This does not allow to consider temperature as a dimension in the design loop, and it misses all the complex inter-dependencies with design choices and power evolution. In this paper, by adopting the functional language SystemC-AMS, we propose a method to enable thermal/power/functional co-simulation. The system thermal model is built by using state-of-the-art circuit equivalent models, by exploiting the support for electrical linear networks intrinsic of SystemC-AMS. The experimental results will show that the choice of SystemC-AMS is a winning strategy for building a simultaneous simulation of multiple functional and extra-functional properties of a system. The generated code exposes an accuracy comparable to that of the reference thermal simulator HotSpot. Additionally, the initial overhead due to the general purpose nature of SystemC-AMS is compensated by surprisingly high performance of transient simulation, with speedups as high as two orders of magnitude

    Wireless extension to the existing SystemC design methodology

    This research uses a SystemC design methodology to model and design complex wireless communication systems, because in the recent years, the complexity of wireless communication systems has increased and the modelling and design of such systems has become inefficient and challenging. The most important aspect of modelling wireless communication systems is that system design choices may affect the communication behaviour and also communication design choices may impact on the system design. Whilst, the SystemC modelling language shows great promise in the modelling of complex hardware/software systems, it still lacks a standard framework that supports modelling of wireless communication systems (particularly the use of wireless communication channels). SystemC lacks elements and components that can be used to express and simulate wireless systems. It does not support noise links natively. To fill this gap, this research proposes to extend the existing SystemC design methodology to include an efficient simulation of wireless systems. It proposes to achieve this by employing a system-level model of a noisy wireless communication channel, along with a small repertoire of standard components (which of course can be replaced on a per application basis). Finally, to validate our developed methodology, a flocking behaviour system is selected as a demonstration (case study). This is a very complex system modelled based on the developed methodology and partitioned along different parameters. By applying our developed methodology to model this system as a case study, we can prove that incorporating and fixing the wireless channel, wireless protocol, noise or all of these elements early in the design methodology is very advantageous. The modelled system is introduced to simulate the behaviour of the particles (mobile units) that form a mobile ad-hoc communication network. Wireless communication between particles is addressed with two scenarios: the first is created using a wireless channel model to link each pair of particles, which means the wireless communication between particles is addressed using a Point-to-Point (P2P) channel; the other scenario is created using a shared channel (broadcast link). Therefore, incorporating wireless features into existing SystemC design methodology, as done in this research, is a very important task, because by developing SystemC as a design tool to support wireless systems, hardware aspects, software parts and communication can be modelled, refined and validated simultaneously on the same platform, and the design space expanded into a two-dimensional design space comprising system and communication

    Der Workshop Methoden und Beschreibungssprachen zur Modellierung und Verifikation von Schaltungen und Systemen (MBMV 2015) findet nun schon zum 18. mal statt. Ausrichter sind in diesem Jahr die Professur Schaltkreis- und Systementwurf der Technischen Universität Chemnitz und das Steinbeis-Forschungszentrum Systementwurf und Test. Der Workshop hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, neueste Trends, Ergebnisse und aktuelle Probleme auf dem Gebiet der Methoden zur Modellierung und Verifikation sowie der Beschreibungssprachen digitaler, analoger und Mixed-Signal-Schaltungen zu diskutieren. Er soll somit ein Forum zum Ideenaustausch sein. Weiterhin bietet der Workshop eine Plattform für den Austausch zwischen Forschung und Industrie sowie zur Pflege bestehender und zur Knüpfung neuer Kontakte. Jungen Wissenschaftlern erlaubt er, ihre Ideen und Ansätze einem breiten Publikum aus Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft zu präsentieren und im Rahmen der Veranstaltung auch fundiert zu diskutieren. Sein langjähriges Bestehen hat ihn zu einer festen Größe in vielen Veranstaltungskalendern gemacht. Traditionell sind auch die Treffen der ITGFachgruppen an den Workshop angegliedert. In diesem Jahr nutzen zwei im Rahmen der InnoProfile-Transfer-Initiative durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung geförderte Projekte den Workshop, um in zwei eigenen Tracks ihre Forschungsergebnisse einem breiten Publikum zu präsentieren. Vertreter der Projekte Generische Plattform für Systemzuverlässigkeit und Verifikation (GPZV) und GINKO - Generische Infrastruktur zur nahtlosen energetischen Kopplung von Elektrofahrzeugen stellen Teile ihrer gegenwärtigen Arbeiten vor.     Hybrid Linux System Modeling with Mixed-Level Simulation

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Electrónica Industrial e ComputadoresWe live in a world where the need for computer-based systems with better performances is growing fast, and part of these systems are embedded systems. This kind of systems are everywhere around us, and we use them everyday even without noticing. Nevertheless, there are issues related to embedded systems in what comes to real-time requirements, because the failure of such systems can be harmful to the user or its environment. For this reason, a common technique to meet real-time requirements in difficult scenarios is accelerating software applications by using parallelization techniques and dedicated hardware components. This dissertations’ goal is to adopt a methodology of hardware-software co-design aided by co-simulation, making the design flow more efficient and reliable. An isolated validation does not guarantee integral system functionality, but the use of an integrated co-simulation environment allows detecting system problems before moving to the physical implementation. In this dissertation, an integrated co-simulation environment will be developed, using the Quick EMUlator (QEMU) as a tool for emulating embedded software platforms in a Linux-based environment. A SystemVerilog Direct Programming Interface (DPI) Library was developed in order to allow SystemVerilog simulators that support DPI to perform co-simulation with QEMU. A library for DLL blocks was also developed in order to allow PSIMR to communicate with QEMU. Together with QEMU, these libraries open up the possibility to co-simulate several parts of a system that includes power electronics and hardware acceleration together with an emulated embedded platform. In order to validate the functionality of the developed co-simulation environment, a demonstration application scenario was developed following a design flow that takes advantage of the mentioned simulation environment capabilities.Vivemos num mundo em que a procura por sistemas computer-based com desempenhos cada vez melhores domina o mercado. Estamos rodeados por este tipo de sistemas, usando-os todos os dias sem nos apercebermos disso, sendo grande parte deles sistemas embebidos. Ainda assim, existem problemas relacionados com os sistemas embebidos no que toca aos requisitos de tempo-real, porque uma falha destes sistemas pode ser perigosa para o utilizador ou o ambiente que o rodeia. Devido a isto, uma técnica comum para se conseguir cumprir os requisitos de tempo-real em aplicações críticas é a aceleração de aplicações de software, utilizando técnicas de paralelização e o uso de componentes de hardware dedicados. O objetivo desta dissertação é adotar uma metodologia de co-design de hardwaresoftware apoiada em co-simulação, tornando o design flow mais eficiente e fiável. Uma validação isolada não garante a funcionalidade do sistema completo, mas a utilização de um ambiente de co-simulação permite detetar problemas no sistema antes deste ser implementado na plataforma alvo. Nesta dissertação será desenvolvido um ambiente de co-simulação usando o QEMU como emulador para as plataformas de software "embebido" baseadas em Linux. Uma biblioteca para SystemVerilog DPI foi desenvolvida, que permite a co-simulação entre o QEMU e simuladores de Register-Transfer Level (RTL) que suportem SystemVerilog. Foi também desenvolvida uma biblioteca para os blocos Dynamic Link Library (DLL) do PSIMR , de modo a permitir a ligação ao QEMU. Em conjunto, as bibliotecas desenvolvidas permitem a co-simulação de diversas partes do sistema, nomeadamente do hardware de eletrónica de potência e dos aceleradores de hardware, juntamente com a plataforma embebida emulada no QEMU.Para validar as funcionalidades do ambiente de co-simulação desenvolvido, foi explorado um cenário de aplicação que tem por base esse mesmo ambiente
