Block-Based Development of Mobile Learning Experiences for the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things enables experts of given domains to create smart user experiences for interacting with the environment. However, development of such experiences requires strong programming skills, which are challenging to develop for non-technical users. This paper presents several extensions to the block-based programming language used in App Inventor to make the creation of mobile apps for smart learning experiences less challenging. Such apps are used to process and graphically represent data streams from sensors by applying map-reduce operations. A workshop with students without previous experience with Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile app programming was conducted to evaluate the propositions. As a result, students were able to create small IoT apps that ingest, process and visually represent data in a simpler form as using App Inventor's standard features. Besides, an experimental study was carried out in a mobile app development course with academics of diverse disciplines. Affordable mobile robotic platforms for teaching computer science at African universities
Educational robotics can play a key role in addressing some of the challenges faced by higher education in Africa. One of the major obstacles preventing a wider adoption of initiatives involving educational robotics in this part of the world is lack of robots that would be affordable by African institutions. In this paper, we present a survey and analysis of currently available affordable mobile robots and their suitability for teaching computer science at African universities. To this end, we propose a set of assessment criteria and review a number of platforms costing an order of magnitude less than the existing popular educational robots. Our analysis identifies suitable candidates offering contrasting features and benefits. We also discuss potential issues and promising directions which can be considered by both educators in Africa but also designers and manufacturers of future robot platforms
Using Scratch to Teach Undergraduate Students' Skills on Artificial Intelligence
This paper presents a educational workshop in Scratch that is proposed for
the active participation of undergraduate students in contexts of Artificial
Intelligence. The main objective of the activity is to demystify the complexity
of Artificial Intelligence and its algorithms. For this purpose, students must
realize simple exercises of clustering and two neural networks, in Scratch. The

A Pedagogy for Original Synners
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the UnexpectedThis essay begins by speculating about the learning environment of the class of 2020. It takes place entirely in a virtual world, populated by simulated avatars, managed through the pedagogy of gaming. Based on this projected version of a future-now-in-formation, the authors consider the implications of the current paradigm shift that is happening at the edges of institutions of higher education. From the development of programs in multimedia literacy to the focus on the creation of hybrid learning spaces (that combine the use of virtual worlds, social networking applications, and classroom activities), the scene of learning as well as the subjects of education are changing. InfoInternet for Education in the Global South: A Study of Applications Enabled by Free Information-only Internet Access in Technologically Disadvantaged Areas (authors' version)
This paper summarises our work on studying educational applications enabled
by the introduction of a new information layer called InfoInternet. This is an
initiative to facilitate affordable access to internet based information in
communities with network scarcity or economic problems from the Global South.
InfoInternet develops both networking solutions as well as business and social
models, together with actors like mobile operators and government
organisations. In this paper we identify and describe characteristics of
educational applications, their specific users, and learning environment. We
are interested in applications that make the adoption of Internet faster,
cheaper, and wider in such communities. When developing new applications (or
adopting existing ones) for such constrained environments, this work acts as

Review of the environmental and organisational implications of cloud computing: final report.
Cloud computing – where elastic computing resources are delivered over the Internet by external service providers – is generating significant interest within HE and FE. In the cloud computing business model, organisations or individuals contract with a cloud computing service provider on a pay-per-use basis to access data centres, application software or web services from any location. This provides an elasticity of provision which the customer can scale up or down to meet demand. This form of utility computing potentially opens up a new paradigm in the provision of IT to support administrative and educational functions within HE and FE. Further, the economies of scale and increasingly energy efficient data centre technologies which underpin cloud services means that cloud solutions may also have a positive impact on carbon footprints.
