    Group Scheduling in a Cellular Manufacturing Shop to Minimise Total Tardiness and nT: a Comparative Genetic Algorithm and Mathematical Modelling Approach

    In this paper, family and job scheduling in a cellular manufacturing shop is addressed where jobs have individual due dates. The objectives are to minimise total tardiness and the number of tardy jobs. Family splitting among cells is allowed but job splitting is not. Two optimisation methods are employed in order to solve this problem, namely mathematical modelling (MM) and genetic algorithm (GA). The results showed that GA found the optimal solution for most of the problems with high frequency. Furthermore, the proposed GA is efficient compared to the MM especially for larger problems in terms of execution times. Other critical aspects of the problem such as family preemption only, impact of family splitting on common due date scenarios and dual objective scenarios are also solved. In short, the proposed comparative approach provides critical insights for the group scheduling problem in a cellular manufacturing shop with distinctive cases

    Dynamic set-up rules for hybrid flow shop scheduling with parallel batching machines

    An S-stage hybrid (or flexible) flow shop, with sequence-independent uniform set-up times, parallel batching machines with compatible parallel batch families (like in casting or heat treatments in furnaces, chemical or galvanic baths, painting in autoclave, etc.) has been analysed with the purpose of reducing the number of tardy jobs (and the makespan); in Graham’s notation: FPB(m_1, m_2, … , m_S)|p-batch, STsi,b|SUM(Ui). Jobs are sorted dynamically (at each new delivery); batches are closed within sliding (or rolling) time windows and processed in parallel by multiple identical machines. Computation experiments have shown the better performance on benchmarks of the two proposed heuristics based on new formulations of the critical ratio (CRsetup) considering the ratio of allowance set-up and processing time in the scheduling horizon, which improves the weighted modified operation due date rule

    Heuristic Algorithms to Minimize Total Weighted Tardiness on the Single Machine and Identical Parallel Machines with Sequence Dependent Setup and Future Ready Time

    This study generates heuristic algorithms to minimize the total weighted tardiness on the single machine and identical parallel machines with sequence dependent setup and future ready time. Due to the complexity of the considered problem, we propose two new Apparent Tardiness Cost based (ATC-based) rules. The performances of these two rules are evaluated on the single machine and identical parallel machines. Besides of these two rules, we also propose a look-ahead identical parallel machines heuristic (LAIPM). When a machine becomes idle, it selects a job to process from available jobs and near future jobs. The proposed method, LAIPM, is evaluated with other look-ahead methods on the identical parallel machines

    Scheduling in assembly type job-shops

    Assembly type job-shop scheduling is a generalization of the job-shop scheduling problem to include assembly operations. In the assembly type job-shops scheduling problem, there are n jobs which are to be processed on in workstations and each job has a due date. Each job visits one or more workstations in a predetermined route. The primary difference between this new problem and the classical job-shop problem is that two or more jobs can merge to foul\u27 a new job at a specified workstation, that is job convergence is permitted. This feature cannot be modeled by existing job-shop techniques. In this dissertation, we develop scheduling procedures for the assembly type job-shop with the objective of minimizing total weighted tardiness. Three types of workstations are modeled: single machine, parallel machine, and batch machine. We label this new scheduling procedure as SB. The SB procedure is heuristic in nature and is derived from the shifting bottleneck concept. SB decomposes the assembly type job-shop scheduling problem into several workstation scheduling sub-problems. Various types of techniques are used in developing the scheduling heuristics for these sub-problems including the greedy method, beam search, critical path analysis, local search, and dynamic programming. The performance of SB is validated on a set of test problems and compared with priority rules that are normally used in practice. The results show that SB outperforms the priority rules by an average of 19% - 36% for the test problems. SB is extended to solve scheduling problems with other objectives including minimizing the maximum completion time, minimizing weighted flow time and minimizing maximum weighted lateness. Comparisons with the test problems, indicate that SB outperforms the priority rules for these objectives as well. The SB procedure and its accompanying logic is programmed into an object oriented scheduling system labeled as LEKIN. The LEKIN program includes a standard library of scheduling rules and hence can be used as a platform for the development of new scheduling heuristics. In industrial applications LEKIN allows schedulers to obtain effective machine schedules rapidly. The results from this research allow us to increase shop utilization, improve customer satisfaction, and lower work-in-process inventory without a major capital investment

    Evolutionary methods for the design of dispatching rules for complex and dynamic scheduling problems

    Three methods, based on Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), to support and automate the design of dispatching rules for complex and dynamic scheduling problems are proposed in this thesis. The first method employs an EA to search for problem instances on which a given dispatching rule performs badly. These instances can then be analysed to reveal weaknesses of the tested rule, thereby providing guidelines for the design of a better rule. The other two methods are hyper-heuristics, which employ an EA directly to generate effective dispatching rules. In particular, one hyper-heuristic is based on a specific type of EA, called Genetic Programming (GP), and generates a single rule from basic job and machine attributes, while the other generates a set of work centre-specific rules by selecting a (potentially) different rule for each work centre from a number of existing rules. Each of the three methods is applied to some complex and dynamic scheduling problem(s), and the resulting dispatching rules are tested against benchmark rules from the literature. In each case, the benchmark rules are shown to be outperformed by a rule (set) that results from the application of the respective method, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    Shop Scheduling In The Presence Of Batching, Sequence-dependent Setups And Incompatible Job Families Minimizing Earliness And Tardiness Penalties

    The motivation of this research investigation stems from a particular job shop production environment at a large international communications and information technology company in which electro-mechanical assemblies (EMAs) are produced. The production environment of the EMAs includes the continuous arrivals of the EMAs (generally called jobs), with distinct due dates, degrees of importance and routing sequences through the production workstations, to the job shop. Jobs are processed in batches at the workstations, and there are incompatible families of jobs, where jobs from different product families cannot be processed together in the same batch. In addition, there are sequence-dependent setups between batches at the workstations. Most importantly, it is imperative that all product deliveries arrive on time to their customers (internal and external) within their respective delivery time windows. Delivery is allowed outside a time window, but at the expense of a penalty. Completing a job and delivering the job before the start of its respective time window results in a penalty, i.e., inventory holding cost. Delivering a job after its respective time window also results in a penalty, i.e., delay cost or emergency shipping cost. This presents a unique scheduling problem where an earlinesstardiness composite objective is considered. This research approaches this scheduling problem by decomposing this complex job shop scheduling environment into bottleneck and non-bottleneck resources, with the primary focus on effectively scheduling the bottleneck resource. Specifically, the problem of scheduling jobs with unique due dates on a single workstation under the conditions of batching, sequence-dependent iii setups, incompatible job families in order to minimize weighted earliness and tardiness is formulated as an integer linear program. This scheduling problem, even in its simplest form, is NP-Hard, where no polynomial-time algorithm exists to solve this problem to optimality, especially as the number of jobs increases. As a result, the computational time to arrive at optimal solutions is not of practical use in industrial settings, where production scheduling decisions need to be made quickly. Therefore, this research explores and proposes new heuristic algorithms to solve this unique scheduling problem. The heuristics use order review and release strategies in combination with priority dispatching rules, which is a popular and more commonly-used class of scheduling algorithms in real-world industrial settings. A computational study is conducted to assess the quality of the solutions generated by the proposed heuristics. The computational results show that, in general, the proposed heuristics produce solutions that are competitive to the optimal solutions, yet in a fraction of the time. The results also show that the proposed heuristics are superior in quality to a set of benchmark algorithms within this same class of heuristic

    Aproximações heurísticas para um problema de escalonamento do tipo flexible job-shop

    Mestrado em Engenharia e Gestão IndustrialEste trabalho aborda um novo tipo de problema de escalonamento que pode ser encontrado em várias aplicações do mundo-real, principalmente na indústria transformadora. Em relação à configuração do shop floor, o problema pode ser classificado como flexible job-shop, onde os trabalhos podem ter diferentes rotas ao longo dos recursos e as suas operações têm um conjunto de recursos onde podem ser realizadas. Outras características de processamento abordadas são: datas possíveis de início, restrições de precedência (entre operações de um mesmo trabalho ou entre diferentes trabalhos), capacidade dos recursos (incluindo paragens, alterações na capacidade e capacidade infinita) e tempos de setup (que podem ser dependentes ou independentes da sequência). O objetivo é minimizar o número total de trabalhos atrasados. Para resolver o novo problema de escalonamento proposto um modelo de programação linear inteira mista é apresentado e novas abordagens heurísticas são propostas. Duas heurísticas construtivas, cinco heurísticas de melhoramento e duas metaheurísticas são propostas. As heurísticas construtivas são baseadas em regras de ordenação simples, onde as principais diferenças entre elas dizem respeito às regras de ordenação utilizadas e à forma de atribuir os recursos às operações. Os métodos são designados de job-by-job (JBJ), operation-by-operation (OBO) e resource-by-resource (RBR). Dentro das heurísticas de melhoramento, a reassign e a external exchange visam alterar a atribuição dos recursos, a internal exchange e a swap pretendem alterar a sequência de operações e a reinsert-reassign é focada em mudar, simultaneamente, ambas as partes. Algumas das heurísticas propostas são usadas em metaheurísticas, nomeadamente a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) e a iterated local search (ILS). Para avaliar estas abordagens, é proposto um novo conjunto de instâncias adaptadas de problemas de escalonamento gerais do tipo flexible job-shop. De todos os métodos, o que apresenta os melhores resultados é o ILS-OBO obtendo melhores valores médios de gaps em tempos médios inferiores a 3 minutos.This work addresses a new type of scheduling problem which can be found in several real-world applications, mostly in manufacturing. Regarding shop floor configuration, the problem can be classified as flexible job-shop, where jobs can have different routes passing through resources and their operations have a set of eligible resources in which they can be performed. The processing characteristics addressed are release dates, precedence constraints (either between operations of the same job or between different jobs), resources capacity (including downtimes, changes in capacity, and infinite capacity), and setup times, which can be sequence-dependent or sequence-independent. The objective is to minimise the total number of tardy jobs. To tackle the newly proposed flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP), a mixed integer linear programming model (MILP) is presented and new heuristic approaches are put forward. Three constructive heuristics, five improvement heuristics, and two metaheuristics are proposed. The constructive heuristics are based on simple dispatching rules, where the main differences among them concern the used dispatching rules and the way resources are assigned. The methods are named job-by-job (JBJ), operation-by-operation (OBO) and resource-by-resource (RBR). Within improvement heuristics, reassign and external exchange aim to change the resources assignment, internal exchange and swap intend changing the operations sequence, and reinsert-reassign is focused in simultaneously changing both parts. Some of the proposed heuristics are used within metaheuristic frameworks, namely greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) and iterative local search (ILS). In order to evaluate these approaches, a new set of benchmark instances adapted from the general FJSP is proposed. Out of all methods, the one which shows the best average results is ILS-OBO obtaining the best average gap values in average times lower than 3 minutes
