Network Virtual Machine (NetVM): A New Architecture for Efficient and Portable Packet Processing Applications
A challenge facing network device designers, besides increasing the speed of network gear, is improving its programmability in order to simplify the implementation of new applications (see for example, active networks, content networking, etc). This paper presents our work on designing and implementing a virtual network processor, called NetVM, which has an instruction set optimized for packet processing applications, i.e., for handling network traffic. Similarly to a Java Virtual Machine that virtualizes a CPU, a NetVM virtualizes a network processor. The NetVM is expected to provide a compatibility layer for networking tasks (e.g., packet filtering, packet counting, string matching) performed by various packet processing applications (firewalls, network monitors, intrusion detectors) so that they can be executed on any network device, ranging from expensive routers to small appliances (e.g. smart phones). Moreover, the NetVM will provide efficient mapping of the elementary functionalities used to realize the above mentioned networking tasks upon specific hardware functional units (e.g., ASICs, FPGAs, and network processing elements) included in special purpose hardware systems possibly deployed to implement network devices
In-Vivo Bytecode Instrumentation for Improving Privacy on Android Smartphones in Uncertain Environments
In this paper we claim that an efficient and readily applicable means to
improve privacy of Android applications is: 1) to perform runtime monitoring by
instrumenting the application bytecode and 2) in-vivo, i.e. directly on the
smartphone. We present a tool chain to do this and present experimental results
showing that this tool chain can run on smartphones in a reasonable amount of
time and with a realistic effort. Our findings also identify challenges to be
addressed before running powerful runtime monitoring and instrumentations
directly on smartphones. We implemented two use-cases leveraging the tool
chain: BetterPermissions, a fine-grained user centric permission policy system
and AdRemover an advertisement remover. Both prototypes improve the privacy of

CAN Fieldbus Communication in the CSP-based CT Library
In closed-loop control systems several realworld entities are simultaneously communicated to through a multitude of spatially distributed sensors and actuators. This intrinsic parallelism and complexity motivates implementing control software in the form of concurrent processes deployed on distributed hardware architectures. A CSP based occam-like architecture seems to be the most convenient for such a purpose. Many, often conflicting, requirements make design and implementation of distributed real-time control systems an extremely difficult task. Java Dust: How Small Can Embedded Java Be?
Java is slowly being accepted as a language and platform for embedded devices. However, the memory requirements of the Java library and runtime are still troublesome. A Java system is considered small when it requires less than 1 MB, and within the embedded domain small microcontollers with a few KB on-chip Flash memory and even less on-chip RAM are very common. For such small devices Java is a clearly challenging. In this paper we present the combination of the Java compiler Muvium for microcontrollers with the tiny soft-core Leros for an FPGA. To the best of our knowledge, the presented embedded Java system is the smallest Java system available. The Leros processor consumes less than 5 % of the logic cells of the smallest FPGA from Altera and the Muvium compiler produces a JVM, including the Java application, that can execute in a few KB ROM and less than 1 KB RAM.
