    Using NICTs for Media Interpreting Training: Bringing Interpreter-Mediated TV News and Radio Interviews to the Classroom

    This paper discusses how the impact of the revolution of NICTs on interpreters' work in the media can be transposed to the interpreting classroom. This article focuses on the use of sound and video editing software by interpreters for producing pre-recorded interpreter-mediated news features for TV and live dialogue radio interpreting. The main purpose is two-fold: 1) to acknowledge the potential of NICTs for interpreter training in a practical context; and 2) to build a pedagogical model based on the pioneering practice of media outlets such as ARTE, the French-German broadcasting company, and RTVE, the Spanish public broadcaster

    Virtual reality in theatre education and design practice - new developments and applications

    The global use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has already established new approaches to theatre education and research, shifting traditional methods of knowledge delivery towards a more visually enhanced experience, which is especially important for teaching scenography. In this paper, I examine the role of multimedia within the field of theatre studies, with particular focus on the theory and practice of theatre design and education. I discuss various IT applications that have transformed the way we experience, learn and co-create our cultural heritage. I explore a suite of rapidly developing communication and computer-visualization techniques that enable reciprocal exchange between students, theatre performances and artefacts. Eventually, I analyse novel technology-mediated teaching techniques that attempt to provide a new media platform for visually enhanced information transfer. My findings indicate that the recent developments in the personalization of knowledge delivery, and also in student-centred study and e-learning, necessitate the transformation of the learners from passive consumers of digital products to active and creative participants in the learning experience

    Research on technology-enabled and technology-mediated interpreting to date has taken a largely product-oriented approach to understand the role of technology during interpreting. In response to calls for additional empirical research on the intersection of interpreting, technology, and cognition, this article argues for the inclusion of process-oriented research and outlines several areas of potential investigation.Hasta el momento, la investigación sobre la interpretación asistida y mediada por tecnología ha adoptado un enfoque centrado principalmente en la interpretación como producto para entender el papel de la tecnología durante esta actividad. En respuesta a la llamada de investigación empírica adicional sobre las intersecciones entre interpretación, tecnología y cognición, este articulo aboga por la inclusión de investigación orientada hacia el proceso de la interpretación e identifica unas áreas de investigación de posible interés.Fins ara, la recerca sobre la interpretació assistida i intercedida per la tecnologia ha adoptat un enfocament centrat principalment en el producte per tal d'entendre el paper de la tecnologia durant l'exercici de la interpretació.     Help or hinder? The Impact of Technology on the Role of Interpreters

    Abstract: The role of the professional interpreter, seemingly timeless and universal is to convey verbal communications from one language to another accurately, in confidence and with impartiality. These principles appear to have been valid since the dawn of cross-cultural and interlingual verbal communications. Why should technology have an impact on the professional role, which is both agreed by professional interpreters, and expected by clients? This paper outlines, through literature review, of both Sign and Spoken language settings, the development of the role of interpreters across different settings and the deontology for the interpreting profession over time. This is then superimposed with the effect of technology, both its facilitation and pressures on its practice. The result highlights the intersection between interpreting studies and technology away from curriculum development. Rather than adopting technology wholesale, practitioners and researchers ought to become more aware of this increasingly important aspect and take appropriate actions.Resumen: El papel del intérprete profesional, que pareciera ser eterno y universal, se basa en transmitir enunciados verbales de un idioma a otro de forma precisa, confidencial e imparcial. A estos principios se los ha considerado válidos desde los albores de la comunicación interlingüística e intercultural. ¿Por qué debería la tecnología impactar en un papel profesional sobre el que los intérpretes coinciden y que los clientes esperan? Mediante el análisis de publicaciones desarrolladas en el campo de las lenguas habladas y de la lengua de signos, este artículo intenta describir cómo evolucionan la función del intérprete en diferentes escenarios y la deontología de su profesión a lo largo del tiempo. A ello se le superponen posteriormente los efectos de la tecnología, tanto en la forma en la que esta facilita la práctica profesional como en las presiones que se generan de su uso. El resultado enfatiza la intersección entre los estudios en interpretación y tecnologías fuera del ámbito del desarrollo curricular. En lugar de adoptar la tecnología indiscriminadamente, los intérpretes y los investigadores quizá deberían prestar más atención a un aspecto de importancia creciente en la práctica profesional, así como adoptar medidas adecuadas

    Teaching dialogue interpreting by distance mode in the COVID-19 era: a challenge for the present, an opportunity for the future

    The sudden shift from a traditional to a virtual classroom in the COVID-19 era has resulted in a radical re-organisation of courses not conceived initially as online learning. The Internet availability of materials and tools has been an excellent resource for the so-called \u201cemergency remote teaching\u201d (ERT); however, the passage was somewhat problematic. This paper presents our experience of teaching dialogue interpreting (DI) by distance mode in two beginner interpreter classrooms during the COVID-19 era. We present three different kinds of data: a questionnaire concerning our first ERT experience (2020), observation sheets, and two excerpts of transcriptions (made after recording the students\u2019 role-play performances in 2021). Our aim is to analyse how ERT can affect course delivery and design and to evaluate whether the pedagogical measures we took to mitigate the drawbacks of ERT were effective. In essence, we were faced with the paradox of using distance learning methods for training students to work as dialogue interpreters in face-to-face interactions.     Procedural-Reasoning Architecture for Applied Behavior Analysis-based Instructions

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability affecting as many as 1 in every 88 children. While there is no known cure for ASD, there are known behavioral and developmental interventions, based on demonstrated efficacy, that have become the predominant treatments for improving social, adaptive, and behavioral functions in children. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)-based early childhood interventions are evidence based, efficacious therapies for autism that are widely recognized as effective approaches to remediation of the symptoms of ASD. They are, however, labor intensive and consequently often inaccessible at the recommended levels. Recent advancements in socially assistive robotics and applications of virtual intelligent agents have shown that children with ASD accept intelligent agents as effective and often preferred substitutes for human therapists. This research is nascent and highly experimental with no unifying, interdisciplinary, and integral approach to development of intelligent agents based therapies, especially not in the area of behavioral interventions. Motivated by the absence of the unifying framework, we developed a conceptual procedural-reasoning agent architecture (PRA-ABA) that, we propose, could serve as a foundation for ABA-based assistive technologies involving virtual, mixed or embodied agents, including robots. This architecture and related research presented in this disser- tation encompass two main areas: (a) knowledge representation and computational model of the behavioral aspects of ABA as applicable to autism intervention practices, and (b) abstract architecture for multi-modal, agent-mediated implementation of these practices
