    Component Composability Issues in Object-Oriented Programming

    Building software from reusable components is considered important in reducing development costs. Object-oriented languages such as C++, Smalltalk and Java, however, are not capable of expressing certain aspects of applications in a composable way. Software engineers may experience difficulties in composing applications from components, for example if components implement code for multiple views, dynamic inheritance and synchronization [Aksit96]. If these aspects have to be programmed, then object-oriented languages may require a considerable amount of redefinition although this may not be intuitively necessary. To solve the composability problems, languages must be enhanced modularly without losing their basic characteristics. In addition, since more than one problem can be experienced for the same object, enhancements must be independent from each other. We have extended the conventional object-oriented model using the concept of composition-filters. Composition-filters can be attached to objects expressed for example in Smalltalk and Java. A number of different filter types have been defined, each addressing a certain concern. This paper first illustrates some practical problems and then introduces composition-filters solutions to overcome these problems

    Logical Foundations of Object-Oriented and Frame-Based Languages

    We propose a novel logic, called Frame Logic (abbr., F-logic), that accounts in a clean, declarative fashion for most of the structural aspects of object-oriented and frame-based languages. These features include object identity, complex objects, inheritance, polymorphic types, methods, encapsulation, and others. In a sense, F-logic stands in the same relationship to the object-oriented paradigm as classical predicate calculus stands to relational programming. The syntax of F-logic is higher-order, which, among other things, allows the user to explore data and schema using the same declarative language. F-logic has a model-theoretic semantics and a sound and complete resolution-based proof procedure.     A Graph-Based Type Representation for Objects

    Subtyping and inheritance are two major issues in the research and development of object-oriented languages, which have been traditionally studied along the lines of typed calculi where types are represented as a combination texts and symbols. wo aspects that are closely related to subtyping and inheritance -- method interdependency, and self type and recursive object type -- have either been overlooked or not received sufficient/satisfactory treatments. In this paper, we propose a graph-based notation for object types and investigate the subtyping and inheritance issues under this new framework. Specifically, we (1) identity the problems that have motivated this paper; (2) propose an extension to Abadi-Cardelli's object-calculus towards fixing the problems; (3) present definitions of object type graphs followed by examples; (4) define subtyping and inheritance using object type graphs; (5) show how the problems can be easily resolved under object type graphs; and (6) summarize the contributions of this paper

    NOOP: A mathematical model of object-oriented programming

    Computer software is ubiquitous. More than 35 × 10 18 computer instructions are executed around the globe each second. As computers dominate more aspects of our lives, there is a growing need to reason more accurately about computer software. Most contemporary computer software is written using object-oriented (OO) programming languages, such as J AVA, C#, and C++. How should we mathematically characterize object-oriented software? This is the question this thesis addresses by presenting an accurate domain-theoretic model of mainstream object-oriented programming. Mainstream object-oriented languages are class-based. In such languages, the name of a class is part of the meaning of an object, a property often called "nominality". Most mainstream OO languages also conform to a static type discipline. Hence, the focus of this thesis is the construction of an accurate model of nominal, statically-typed OO languages. In statically-typed nominal OO languages, class names are also part of the meaning of corresponding class types, and class inheritance (subclassing) is explicitly declared; one class is a subclass of another only if it is declared as such. When static type systems are formulated to describe sets of objects, subtyping is defined so that subclassing is consistent with subtyping. Nevertheless, some programming languages (PL) theoreticians dismiss this identification as a design error because the only published models of OO languages exclude nominal information from objects and define subtyping in a way that ignores nominality. In nominal OO languages, program behavior depends on the nominal information embedded in objects. This thesis builds a model of OO languages called NOOP that includes nominal information and defines static types in accord with mainstream OO language designs. In NOOP , the meaning of every object includes its class name. Similarly, types are defined such that objects belong to a particular class type if and only if they are members of classes that inherit from the class corresponding to the class type. To demonstrate the utility of the model, we show that in NOOP inheritance and OO subtyping coincide. This work shows that mainstream OO languages are not technically defective in identifying inheritance and subtyping. In models that include nominal information and define types that respect nominal information, this identification is mathematically correct. The folklore among OO programming language researchers that "inheritance is not subtyping" is incorrect

    Object-oriented programming languages, such as Smalltalk, help one to build reusable program modules. The reuse of program modules requires adequate documentation --- formal or informal. Larch/Smalltalk is a formal specification language for specifying such reusable Smalltalk modules. Larch/Smalltalk firmly separates specification from implementation. In Larch/Smalltalk, the unit of specification is an abstract data type, which is an abstraction of the behavior produced by one or more Smalltalk classes. A type can be a subtype of other types, which allows types to be organized based on specified behavior, and also allows for inheritance of their specifications. Larch/Smalltalk specifications are developed using specification tools integrated in the Smalltalk programming environment

    Data Abstraction Mechanisms in Sina/st

    This paper describes a new data abstraction mechanism in an object-oriented model of computing. The data abstraction mechanism described here has been devised in the context of the design of Sina/st language. In Sina/st no language constructs have been adopted for specifying inheritance or delegation, but rather, we introduce simpler mechanisms that can support a wide range of code sharing strategies without selecting one among them as a language feature. Sina/st also provides a stronger data encapsulation than most of the existing object-oriented languages. This language has been implemented on the SUN 3 workstation using Smalltalk
