    An investigation into the efficacy of avatar-based systems for student advice

    Student support is an important function in all universities. Most students expect access to support 24/7, but support staff cannot be available at all times of day. This paper addresses this problem, describing the development of an avatar-based system to guide students through the materials provided by a university student employability service. Firstly, students and staff were surveyed to establish the demand for such a system. The system was then constructed. Finally, the system was evaluated by students and staff, which led to a clearer understanding of the optimal role for avatar-based systems and consequent improvements to the system’s functionality

    Physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI) is inevitable for a human user while working with assistive robots. There are various aspects of pHRI, such as choosing the interface, type of control schemes implemented and the modes of interaction. The research work presented in this thesis concentrates on a health-care assistive robot called Adaptive Robot Nursing Assistant (ARNA). An assistive robot in a health-care environment has to be able to perform routine tasks and be aware of the surrounding environment at the same time. In order to operate the robot, a teleoperation based interaction would be tedious for some patients as it would require a high level of concentration and can cause cognitive fatigue. It would also require a learning curve for the user in order to teleoperate the robot efficiently. The research work involves the development of a proposed Human-Machine Interface (HMI) framework which integrates the decision-making module, interaction module, and a tablet interface module. The HMI framework integrates a traded control based interaction which allows the robot to take decisions on planning and executing a task while the user only has to specify the task through a tablet interface. According to the preliminary experiments conducted as a part of this thesis, the traded control based approach allows a novice user to operate the robot with the same efficiency as an expert user. Past researchers have shown that during a conversation with a speech interface, a user would feel disengaged if the answers received from the interface are not in the context of the conversation. The research work in this thesis explores the different possibilities of implementing a speech interface that would be able to reply to any conversational queries from the user. A speech interface was developed by creating a semantic space out of Wikipedia database using Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA). This allowed the speech interface to have a wide knowledge-base and be able to maintain a conversation in the same context as intended by the user. This interface was developed as a web-service and was deployed on two different robots to exhibit its portability and the ease of implementation with any other robot. In the work presented, a tablet application was developed which integrates speech interface and an onscreen button interface to execute tasks through ARNA robot. This tablet interface application can access video feed and sensor data from robots, assist the user with decision making during pick and place operations, monitor the user health over time, and provide conversational dialogue during sitting sessions. In this thesis, we present the software and hardware framework that enable a patient sitter HMI, and together with experimental results with a small number of users that demonstrate that the concept is sound and scalable

    Survey on Chatbot Design Techniques in Speech Conversation Systems

    Human-Computer Speech is gaining momentum as a technique of computer interaction. There has been a recent upsurge in speech based search engines and assistants such as Siri, Google Chrome and Cortana. Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques such as NLTK for Python can be applied to analyse speech, and intelligent responses can be found by designing an engine to provide appropriate human like responses. This type of programme is called a Chatbot, which is the focus of this study. This paper presents a survey on the techniques used to design Chatbots and a comparison is made between different design techniques from nine carefully selected papers according to the main methods adopted. These papers are representative of the significant improvements in Chatbots in the last decade. The paper discusses the similarities and differences in the techniques and examines in particular the Loebner prize-winning Chatbots

    Welcome to IEEE-ORA (Ontologies for Robotics and Automation) IROS workshop. This is the 1st edition of the workshop on! Standardized Knowledge Representation and Ontologies for Robotics and Automation. The IEEE-ORA 2014 workshop was held on the 18th September, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. In!the IEEE-ORA IROS workshop, 10 contributions were presented from 7 countries in North and South America, Asia and Europe. The presentations took place in the afternoon, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. The first session was dedicated to “Standards for Knowledge Representation in Robotics”, where presentations were made from the IEEE working group standards for robotics and automation, and also from the ISO TC 184/SC2/WH7. The second session was dedicated to “Core and Application Ontologies”, where presentations were made for core robotics ontologies, and also for industrial and robot assisted surgery ontologies. Three posters were presented in emergent applications of ontologies in robotics. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this workshop. Next, to all the members of the international program committee, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time.     Emotional and Domain Concept Enhancements to Alicebot

    Extensive research and development have been done in the area of human simulation and artificial intelligence and their related fields, such as common sense knowledge bases, chatterbots, natural language parsing, semantic analysis, synthetic actors, and cognitive sciences. This paper takes part in that extensive research by focusing on the improvement of human simulation in chatterbots, specifically in Alicebot, a prominent non-emotional pattern-matching chatbot. An emotion and personality model is added to Alicebot so that it can make decisions based on its emotions and personality. Alicebot is also augmented with the ability to determine what it likes or does not like based on its domain concept preferences. Finally, Alicebot will be able to generate its own text without using patterns. These improvements will allow Alicebot to better simulate responses like humans
