    IDEALIST control and service management solutions for dynamic and adaptive flexi-grid DWDM networks

    Wavelength Switched Optical Networks (WSON) were designed with the premise that all channels in a network have the same spectrum needs, based on the ITU-T DWDM grid. However, this rigid grid-based approach is not adapted to the spectrum requirements of the signals that are best candidates for long-reach transmission and high-speed data rates of 400Gbps and beyond. An innovative approach is to evolve the fixed DWDM grid to a flexible grid, in which the optical spectrum is partitioned into fixed-sized spectrum slices. This allows facilitating the required amount of optical bandwidth and spectrum for an elastic optical connection to be dynamically and adaptively allocated by assigning the necessary number of slices of spectrum. The ICT IDEALIST project will provide the architectural design, protocol specification, implementation, evaluation and standardization of a control plane and a network and service management system. This architecture and tools are necessary to introduce dynamicity, elasticity and adaptation in flexi-grid DWDM networks. This paper provides an overview of the objectives, framework, functional requirements and use cases of the elastic control plane and the adaptive network and service management system targeted in the ICT IDEALIST project

    Rerouting Technique for Faster Restoration of Preempted Calls

    In a communication network where resources are shared between instantaneous request (IR) and book-ahead (BA) connections, activation of future BA connections causes preemption of many on-going IR connections upon resource scarcity. A solution to this problem is to reroute the preempted calls via alternative feasible paths, which often does not ensure acceptably low disruption of service. In this paper, a new rerouting strategy is proposed that uses the destination node to initiate the rerouting and thereby reduces the rerouting time, which ultimately improves the service disruption time. Simulations on a widely used network topology suggest that the proposed rerouting scheme achieves more successful rerouting rate with lower service disruption time, while not compromising other network performance metrics like utilization and call blocking rate

    Preference Based Fair Allocation of Limitted Resources

    The fair division of scarce resources among agents is a challenging issue across a range of applications, especially when there is competition among agents. One application of resource division is in Air Traffic Management (ATM). This dissertation is motivated by the fairness issues that arise in the resource allocation procedures that have been introduced under Collaborative Decision Making (CDM). Fair rationing and allocation of available en-route time slots are two major challenges that we address in this research. The first challenge, fair rationing, is about how to compute a fair share of available resources among agents, when the available resources fall below the total demand. Since the demand, (flights), are time dependent, we introduce a new rationing method that includes the time dependency of demand. The new procedure gives every flight that is disrupted by an AFP a share of available resources. This is in contrast to Ration-By-Schedule (RBS), the allocation method currently in use, where later scheduled flights do not receive any slots. We will discuss and prove the fairness properties of our novel rationing procedure. The second challenge, allocation of en-route resources, is about how to allocate resources among competitive agents, (flight operators), when each agent has different preferences over resources, (time slots). We design four randomized procedures for allocating scarce resources when the airlines' preferences are included. These procedures use an exogenous fair share, which can be computed using the method described above, as a fairness standard for the allocation of slots among airlines. The first two procedures, Preference Based Proportional Random Allocation (PBPRA) and Modified-PBPRA, implicity assume equal weight for each time slot. Compared to RBS, PBPRA and M-PBPRA reduce the total internal cost of airlines and also assign each airline a number of slots close (in expectation) to their fair share. The fairness, efficiency and incentive properties of PBPRA and M-PBPRA are evaluated. The value (or cost of delay) an airline associates with a particular flight may vary substantially from flight to flight. Airlines who wish to receive priority for certain flights usually are willing to pay more for specific time slots. To address the need to express varying priorities, we propose two procedures, Dual Price Proportional Random Allocation (DP-PRA) and Modified-DP-PRA (MDP-PRA) , that assign dual prices to resources, i.e. time slots, in order to capture the airlines' preferences over delays, rerouting and cancelations.     Quality of experience-centric management of adaptive video streaming services : status and challenges

    Video streaming applications currently dominate Internet traffic. Particularly, HTTP Adaptive Streaming ( HAS) has emerged as the dominant standard for streaming videos over the best-effort Internet, thanks to its capability of matching the video quality to the available network resources. In HAS, the video client is equipped with a heuristic that dynamically decides the most suitable quality to stream the content, based on information such as the perceived network bandwidth or the video player buffer status. The goal of this heuristic is to optimize the quality as perceived by the user, the so-called Quality of Experience (QoE). Despite the many advantages brought by the adaptive streaming principle, optimizing users' QoE is far from trivial. Current heuristics are still suboptimal when sudden bandwidth drops occur, especially in wireless environments, thus leading to freezes in the video playout, the main factor influencing users' QoE. This issue is aggravated in case of live events, where the player buffer has to be kept as small as possible in order to reduce the playout delay between the user and the live signal. In light of the above, in recent years, several works have been proposed with the aim of extending the classical purely client-based structure of adaptive video streaming, in order to fully optimize users' QoE. In this article, a survey is presented of research works on this topic together with a classification based on where the optimization takes place. This classification goes beyond client-based heuristics to investigate the usage of server-and network-assisted architectures and of new application and transport layer protocols. In addition, we outline the major challenges currently arising in the field of multimedia delivery, which are going to be of extreme relevance in future years

    NETWORK DESIGN UNDER DEMAND UNCERTAINTY

    A methodology for network design under demand uncertainty is proposed in this dissertation. The uncertainty is caused by the dynamic nature of the IP-based traffic which is expected to betransported directly over the optical layer in the future. Thus, there is a need to incorporate the uncertainty into a design modelexplicitly. We assume that each demand can be represented as a random variable, and then develop an optimization model to minimizethe cost of routing and bandwidth provisioning. The optimization problem is formulated as a nonlinear Multicommodity Flow problemusing Chance-Constrained Programming to capture both the demand variability and levels of uncertainty guarantee. Numerical work ispresented based on a heuristic solution approach using a linear approximation to transform the nonlinear problem to a simpler linearprogramming problem. In addition, the impact of the uncertainty on a two-layer network is investigated. This will determine how theChance-Constrained Programming based scheme can be practically implemented. Finally, the implementation guidelines for developingan updating process are provided
